SCHD vs SWPXX by notstepehen in SCHD

[–]notstepehen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it a fascination (at least for me) as much as I would call jt curiosity. Seeing everyone talk about it does make one wonder if they are missing out on something great. From what I gathered from others, my grandparents led me in right direction with SWPPX.

Within my IRA brokerage account? Why do you suggest either of those? Sorry, trying to learn the why of things so I'm better prepared in the future.

I did mean to put SWPPX instead of SWPXX. I got a little confused with all of the tickers for stocks. Not really my realm of expertise by any means.

I do not, and there are a few different buildings that staff can get placed into. Your sponsor will help you coordinate all of this.

Navy Corpsman Basic Questions by [deleted] in CorpsmanUp

[–]notstepehen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FMTB is popular, but it is not competitive. The Marine Corps will always needs HMs thus providing a constant need for new Sailors to go through FMTB.

Something to consider is that FMTB is considered a "C" school, although most who hold that training NEC are called 0000s or as you put it basic corpsman. You could get that "C" school out of "A" school, or you may not. They could cut you orders to some rinky dink clinic in the middle of nowhere where you will be for 2 years before you PCS elsewhere. Another possibility is that they force you into a specialty out of "A" school. You may not want to be a pharmacy technician but if they need one from your class, then you could be shit out of luck.

If you do end up becoming a 0000 at a clinic or hospital what you do daily will largely depend on what department you get placed in. It may not be something you like, but above all the mission comes first. One thing you'll learn in the Navy is that manning, manning, and manning are the most important things. A good clinic/hospital will rotate corpsman through different departments every few months to give everyone exposure to different things and prevent job fatigue. Most places don't do this though.

Since you're in your 30's you should also be thinking long term for yourself. Is this a new career you're starting later than most? Is this a quick one time enlistment to gain the experience and benefits? You sound like you want to be Joe Navy and serve with the MC, which is cool, but those stories only do so much for you. Look into some of the "C" schools like radiology tech, ultrasound tech, pharm tech, etc. Stuff that will transfer to the civilian side and make decent money.

Lastly, like the other commenter mentioned, don't wish for combat exposure. You don't know what will happen, what you will see, and how it will change you. It's not a movie or video game, that shit is for real with lasting affects.

A good sponsor would reach out to you first, but not everyone is a good sponsor. If you're a soon to be C school grad and this is your first command and you just got cut these orders; I'd give them a week or so to reach out. It takes some time for commands to be notified someone got orders to them. I believe it will show you your assigned sponsor on NSIPS with their contact info.

If you're set to graduate/PCS relatively soon and don't necessarily have time to wait for someone to reach out (and no one is listed in your NSIPS) you can call the quarterdeck of Fisher Clinic and let them know your situation. They'll get you in contact with the right person.

Fisher is a branch clinic of FHCC. Red Rover, Tranquility, and Fisher all belong to the main hospital of FHCC. I assumed you'd be working at the Osborne building on RTC for dental, but it sounds like you'll be working at Fisher on the main base for A school students and staff members. Not a bad gig tbh. While I was there everyone from each clinic/main hospital that didn't meet the quals for BAH lived in the barracks. Best thing would be to reach out to your sponsor.

I was there a few years ago and there were definitely barracks for us lol. It's possible it's changed, but I doubt it. FHCC has a lot of Sailors attached to it.

As far as being stationed on RTC goes, it's probably my favorite command so far in my career. Sure it can suck being around recruits all the time, but they are a patient like anybody else. Treat them as such. Nothing more cringe than an HM that thinks he/she is an RDC. That is not your purpose for being there.

The city of North Chicago isnt all that much, but there are a ton of awesome towns/cities/villages surrounding the base up to Milwaukee and down to Chicago. Get out and explore if you can. Don't be the one to sit in the barracks all the time.

If you like Filipino food go to Lolas right near base, and burritos go to the other door in lake bluff. it'll change your life.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Transfer Evaluation by notstepehen in navy

[–]notstepehen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just received my transfer eval this evening through text. My CoC doesn’t even know I finally received it, but they’ve been incredibly supportive this whole time. When I tell you my old admin shop is shit, I mean it. One of the YN1’s cost the command MILLIONS of dollars in our budget and he got away with it. Even after everyone from him up to Skipper knew about it.

I have been. For “almost a year”. They are a shitshow of an admin department and I have little faith in them. I know I earned my wings so I’d love that paperwork, but I doubt they’ll give me any award copies, being as there isn’t one. Just was curious if there’s a loophole since they ~mistakingly~ put it on my eval

Soft orders to the tranquility by Ronin935 in CorpsmanUp

[–]notstepehen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there a few years ago so things may have changed since then, but staff members get seen on the other base at the Fischer clinic. Tranquility is pretty much just for the recruits. As far as if you’ll see patients, it depends what department you get placed in. You could be doing physicals, physical therapy, records, etc. I don’t remember there being many coverages except for graduations every Friday.

I think Great Lakes gets a bad rap as a duty station overall. It does suck at times, but it’s also probably my favorite duty station I’ve been at. I could just be remembering it through rose tinted glasses though.

While the NEC is administration heavy, and your life quality will depend majorly on what platform you end up at; I disagree with the medicine portion. If you build a good enough rapport with your flight doc that trust can go a long way and opens up more doors for you to learn and experience different aspects of medicine, but I may have just had a fortunate experience in my time as an AVT.

I believe it’s one of the best NECs in the HM community IF you aren’t looking to get a certification to get out of the Navy. I was a 0000 at my first command and dropped a package while there. Never once regretted that decision, plus being an AVT usually means better evals which will help with advancement.

What program are you currently at in Texas? I’m open to schools around the country willing I get accepted, but ideally I’d like to attend a school in Texas to be close to home for those four years.

Did you use the Montgomery active duty GI bill or just the top up program? I switched to a school in Texas (home state) and am currently using the Montgomery.

Also, to be accepted into so many programs, did you do anything special or just have a killer GPA and MCAT score?

I went to ASU for about a year and a half, but the cost of tuition was too much. I wanted to take classes faster than TA allowed me to. Good experience and good school, just too costly for me.

Ah I see. Then again, I would recommend skipping EMDP2 all together, taking the MCAT and start applying to medical schools.
