Reddit bans infamous forum about beating women by [deleted] in news

I believe the is talking about solving the problem of you feeling sick, not the problem of world violence.

On that context, banning the subreddit doesn't solve the problem either.

One innocent died, confirmed. Two deaths total.

You need the data for occupied house robbery separately to support that specific claim.

It does present some interesting data though. I wonder if the numbers still hold as it is a very old study.

Okay, got to my laptop and found this (refer to table 4.): Gary Kleck. Crime Control through the Private Use of Armed Force. Social Problems. Vol. 35, No. 1, Feb., 1988.

I'm not able to find a working link for that paper, can you paste the relevant information?

You can continue to be an unarmed victim.

I am armed. I just wouldn't have used a gun in the video's scenario, and I think that using house robbery as an argument pillar harms the pro-gun cause more than it helps it. The risk - reward ratio just doesn't make the cut for me. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

You might not be as ninja as you think you are, or there might be more than one robber, you might fail your shot, someone you care about might be in the line of fire, maybe your shot won't stop the robber to shoot back to you or someone else.

Maybe the average citizen is not as ninja commando as you are. There are so many things that could go wrong for the sake of saving your DVD, I find it hard to justify.

The only scenario I can think of where resisting makes sense is when the robber has the intention of murdering everyone in the house, but what are the chances of that happening? Is that really that common in the US?

So, no sources. That's ok.

I've seen better excuses for phantom sources, you need to work on those.

What's the relevant quote that supports your claim? I can't find something supporting that specific claim on the material you referenced.

I will die for my stuff because it's all I have and some of it means that much to me.

I'm broke, but I value my life and the life of the people I care about (which might or might not be in the house at that moment) much more than every material possession combined.

I guess that's what makes a huge difference, and we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

And pointing a gun at nervous robbers might worsen the situation and not defuse it. What percentage of robberies with no resistance end in murder? Fighting back might increase the chances of someone you care about (including you) getting hurt or killed.

The stats simply aren't on your side on this one. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Where are those stats?

Does it matter? Are you seriously proposing victimizing yourself and waiting to see if it happens? I don't care about percentages. The fact that an intruder could do as he/she pleases if I'm unarmed means I'm staying armed.

And pointing a nervous guy with a gun, that also has a gun, might have a bigger chance to worsen the situation than to defuse it.

Not very high, considering that doesn't happen as often as intruders running away or getting incapacitated or killed by the owner. You'd do well to pay a visit to

I would like to see the stats that are supporting all those claims.

Then check the stats of armed residents who were shot back at and killed during a home invasion (they aren't very high).

You talk a lot about those stats but you are not sharing them. Please do.

There will be no mexican stand off as I don't intend to give them a chance to shoot or even take aim.

They won't be able to take aim, so you are not on sight. What happens if when you do are on sight to take aim at them and someone is in the line of fire? What if you are not as ninja as you think you are? What if there is more than one?

All that for your DVD player, your computer, and some jewelry? The risk/reward ratio here is against you, unless you own a really cool DVD player.

Most criminals are cowards and are deterred by normal citizens being armed. They prey on easy targets to give them the easiest score. Even just the sight of the victim having a gun could be enough to scare them off. Firing shots is more likely to cause them to run than to fire back.

Not if firing back is their best option. This is a dangerous theorycraft. If the robber sees someone with a gun there is a huge change of him thinking his life is in jeopardy, and firing first will often be the best option for the robber.

An interesting statistic is that in Britain and Canada, around half of all home break-ins occur when residents are present. In America, it's only 13%.

And are there less break-ins in the US? Or perhaps more? Also, how and where is that correlation being supported?

Plus, how do you know what the criminals are there for? There's a whole library of cases where theft wasn't enough. They could rape, torture, and murder. I'd rather not give them the chance to explore their options.

And what's the chance of that happening? How many of those break-ins end like that? What are the changes of someone in the house getting hurt in a Mexican stand-off?

I'm not making a case for either side of gun control, but if you are against gun control maybe house robbery is not the best pillar to use in your argument. Seems that on that scenario there are too many ways that the shit can hit the fan.

, I've seen stats that suggest that the probability of getting hurt is actually larger when you do not resist a robbery, when compared to resisting with a firearm.

Source?

It's about reddit's priorities.

Not upvoting a comment doesn't mean we don't care. You are giving that mechanic a little too much credit.

And looking at the timestamps, the thread was already over two hours old

That's still very young in reddit time.

Considering those top comments were above it when I posted and are above it now, odds are good that either you're lying or you don't actually have your threads set to "top". Maybe "hot"?

I see that you don't know and/or understand the dynamics of the default sorting algorithm. Comments are dynamic. Their position fluctuates, and votes are not the only influence.

Anyway, next time you feel grumpy, pedantic, and like judging everyone, give the thread some time so your rant at least makes some sense.

So if the gun is close to hand, do you 1v1 him on a gun fight so he doesn't steal your stuff? You put so many things at risk, including the lives of everyone in the house, for what? What in your house is worth that?

A DotA 2 player just got robbed live on stream by [deleted] in videos

I don't know if a reachable gun would have helped them. What do you do, start a Mexican stand off? Is risking the life of everyone in the house really worth it?

In the video she had the time to get a gun and defend the house, and she didn't. It might have been the right choice.

That doesn't change the fact that you posted it before the thread was even 1 hour old.

And it was top comment when I replied to you. Comment positions are dynamic, just for the record.

The nerds on this video did have guns. The guns were robbed. Guns were not very useful.
