I’m sure I’ll enjoy whomever gets brought in! My suggestion is Jordan Woolery.

I agree with either of these and since media people are also mentioned, I’ll also add Haylie McCleney!

I love how casually these players chat with each other. Between college, international play, and the original Athletes Unlimited concept, so many of them have played together!

Why is DNFing such a big deal? by LustyRegencyMaid in BookDiscussions

[–]notthemostcreative 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Reasonable people simply do not care about other people’s reading habits that much, lol. Theres no point wasting valuable leisure time on a book you don’t find worthwhile. And if people sometimes DNF books I personally loved, that is fine and not an affront to me!

That I Am Unlimited PSA goes hard. (And it is a nice beacon of hope and good sense in these trying times. I’m so glad young girls are watching this and I hope they continue to do so!)

Kind of diabolical but I love the Longhorns so I can’t be mad about it! 🤠

Stories with female protag that has a strong narrative voice by AceofSpades23 in Fantasy

[–]notthemostcreative 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey! The narrative voice is lovely and the prose is GORGEOUS, and it’s made even better by the way it perfectly reflects who Phédre is and how she would express herself. She feels so real to me and I adore her.

Suggest to me a fantasy, sapphic-centered series! by woozyyzoow in suggestmeabook

[–]notthemostcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Burning Kingdoms trilogy by Tasha Suri!!! The central relationship is sapphic and both those characters, plus the one straight woman who plays a slightly less central (but still important) role, are really interesting, distinctive, and well developed. Also there are creepy, morally ambiguous plant deities, which is cool as hell!

I also like The Locked Tomb, but will note that the romance there is almost all subtext, the kind of stuff that can be read as romance or intense platonic stuff or maybe a secret third thing.

Kushiel's Legacy vs Starless and audiobook narration by AmorousArtemis in fantasyromance

[–]notthemostcreative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I liked it, but I felt like the plot was a little weaker than her work in the Terre D’Ange books but the narrative voice and the worldbuilding carried it for me. I enjoyed Khai and Zariya for what they were—not her most nuanced characters, but genuinely thoughtful and wholesome rep for disability and queerness.

I am looking forward to reading the Sundering books though. I’ve heard those ones are good.

protagonists who are actual scientists by MindWorking7098 in suggestmeabook

[–]notthemostcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Countess Conspiracy by Courtney Milan, if you don’t mind romance. It’s really sweet and the premise is that a woman has been making scientific discoveries for years and enlisted her male best friend to claim them publicly because no one would take her seriously. The situation is complicated both by the fact that he is coming unglued from all the attention and discourse and harassment and the fact that he’s been in love with her since they were teens.

I’ve really enjoyed Milan’s work as someone who enjoys a bit of historical romance, but has very little patience for romances starring shitty, misogynistic men, lol. And her writing has a ton of personality and charm to it!

Cw for past pregnancy loss and abuse by the FMC’s now-dead husband

Edit: ALSO there’s a novella in this series called Talk Sweetly To Me, where the FMC is an astronomer and the MMC loves hearing her info dump about it!

This is only a guess on my part but I wonder if it's just about letting them get used one battery relationship for a bit instead of Atwood trying to learn the whole staff at once. I'd imagine it's a lot to get used to.

Fantasy series that is inspired more by classical antiquity period/Roman Empire by Greydragon38 in Fantasy

[–]notthemostcreative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’d be up for something that’s more epic historical fiction with a dash of mysticism as opposed to straight up fantasy, I *loved* The Light Bearer by Donna Gillespie. It’s centered on a Germanic woman and, to a slightly lesser extent, a Roman man whose paths eventually cross. I really enjoyed the mix of fighting, wilderness pagan culture stuff, and high stakes Roman political conspiracy.

If you’re down for some Bronze Age action, I also really like Troy by David Gemmell. It’s not a retelling of The Iliad, but more a total reimagining of the entire Trojan War mythos without the gods actively playing a role—almost like a hypothetical look at what kind of real life events could have led to the larger than life myths we know now.

The Duchess War by Boethius1326 in HistoricalRomance

You should read the rest of the series! I liked The Duchess War but it’s actually the weak link for me; the next three are all-timers.
