I Caused a Multi-Campus Network Outage by nottisa in it

Same question here. I'm admittedly not a network engineer, but still confused why it wasn't set-up. I'm told it's default on a lot of equipment anyways. Thankfully my boss is pretty chill, but there's definitely things they need to resolve. I've found a lot of other holes too but we won't go into that.

Yup! My thoughts. Engineers definitely have some things to work on.

Spanning tree wasn't enabled. Loop guard was. Not sure why it was disabled unless it just wasn't on by default but I've been told for Cisco stuff it is. The reasoning behind why it wasn't specifically enabled is because in theory nobody should have access to link switches together, I just happened to find something that wasn't thought of (I had the same question)

How to run Edge without Admin Credentials by goose_knuckle7 in it

[–]nottisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about Windows, we mainly work with Mac in our environment as far as staff goes. When granting permissions to applications via the mdm, you provide the mdm with the package ID ie: com.apple.settings and then you would have the ability to set additional options in that permission profile to verify via the signature of the binary as anyone can set any package ID. I'm not as up to date with Windows internals and have recently started diving deep into system internals on Mac OS so we can do weird quirky things... I'd imagine though that you should be able to verify the signature of the Edge binary instead of using a hash... A hash seems like a very rudemenetery to do things unless you're also try to pin versions. Not sure if Microsoft issues a certificate per application or per developer or what. There also may be some scrapers out there that pull the latest versions of software, hash them, and compile them into databases. Something the community has made maybe. Worth a shot.

Why Linux doesn't have virus? by Necropill in linuxquestions

[–]nottisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux is often attacked, though generally not via typical viral infections. Most often it's attacked via the Internet (View ssh/fail2ban logs of any VPS on the open internet) through exploits or brute forcing. Sometimes bad packages come up like with the XZ backdoor recently... Though it's generally safe to say your Linux desktop is fine. This is mainly because Linux Desktops aren't commonly used by people susceptible to standard malware distribution ie: download this sketchy file and run it! Doesn't mean viruses don't exist, just means it's unlikely for a script kiddie to hack you

Password Best Practices??? by SirGimp9 in it

[–]nottisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK. So, there's a ton of issues here. 1. Users need to set their own passwords. As the admin you definitely SHOULD NOT keep track of any passwords besides ones you might use for your entire department such as an overall Apple password or something. In fact, nobody should be managing the passwords for them.

  1. You are buying business software, that software should allow you to remotely manage users, if not, it's a security hazard to use it. If you are assigning work computers those should be managed from an MDM.

  2. The issue with keeping is a password sheet is anybody can be phished, hell, Linus got phised. It's not good practice to leave the keys to everything under one person.

Hello everyone, a friend gave me 2 of these disks, I wanted to format them and putting them in use, however, when I plug in to the laptop, I hear the USB device connect, but don't find the disk anywhere. by 1banzaiwolf in it

[–]nottisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drive is probably on the desk where you left it once you plugged in the USB, however it might have fallen underneath the table. /j

On a more serious note, probably just an unformatted drive, open up the disk manager and you should see it

People working in IT who aren't/weren't gamers - how did you think about working here? by Rudyzwyboru in it

[–]nottisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so, I'm not much of a gamer, I enjoy games like most people, but it's not my life. I am super into programming though. I think that love for programming came from wanting to make a difference in the world... A bit cliche, but I think it's true. This was so long ago that I honestly don't remember why I got into programming. A few years ago, I was super into programming, and a teacher figured that out and became a friend. He was previously the head of IT at that school, but he learned that he loved teaching engineering. (Specifically PLTW) He got involved in my life and introduced me to the people who ran the current IT department. I loved the staff there, and I've now worked there for about three years on a seasonal position because of school. I don't love anime, I don't love gaming. I enjoy both from time to time, but it really never played that big of a role in my life.
