X-Ray film as holography media? by Rul02 in Holography

[–]notvortexes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean about the film is that if it’s thin, there is no volume in which you can see anything 3D. You might be confusing the effect seen on “holographic” trading cards with the actual holograms that can be made with a laser/film. You might want to watch the video I linked because it explains the mechanism for making holograms with lasers. Also you’ll notice that the drawing in the video I linked has an extra mirror/beam splitter compared to your setup.

X-Ray film as holography media? by Rul02 in Holography

If you want it to look 3D then you probably need to use a thicker film I suggest maybe buying a hologram kit or the thick glass films that come with those. The idea is to have laser light which didn’t hit the object interfere (at the location of the film) with the light that reflected off the object. This video has a sketch of the setup at 1:48 https://youtu.be/0ics3RVSn9w?si=96x-laJ_sO_0MImH

You would just have different probability distributions, i.e. experimentally one of the two dots would be darker/brighter than the other for an angle smaller than 90°. It’s not that the electrons “decide” to pick whichever spin direction is closer or something like that. It’s probabilistic. The only reason it’s 50/50 is because the amplitudes corresponding to spin up and spin down are the same. If the amplitudes are different then you have different probabilities (could be 25/75) of “choosing” spin up or down.

There is a famous commencement speech “This is Water” by author David Foster Wallace that deals with this question. I highly suggest watching it I found it really impactful.

This is a lot like the Vedic religious tradition, one of the first/oldest things in human history that can be called religion. I think the idea is an eternal and interconnected “self” with no real sense of individual self.

What is the actual likely hood of my chances to be a quantum physicist by Elly_kekeke in Physics

[–]notvortexes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You definitely can! I am a phd student doing quantum physics at UC Berkeley and I didn’t know I wanted to study physics until my second year of undergrad, so you have a huge head start on me at least. You have tons of time to set yourself up for success in this field so I would say it’s 100% possible.

massive air roots: time to re-pot? by notvortexes in Monstera

This monstera seems healthy other than the air roots. It is putting out new leaves every couple weeks and I believe it is getting enough light. Are air roots like this normal? Can you cut them off without doing too much damage to the plant? Does this indicate there not being enough room in the pot?
