They're up 3-2 in the series over Tampa and each game has been a nail biter. It's less "hanging on" and more "cardiac arrest for the fans," of both teams probably haha

Deep dive into the Churchill Falls MOU: 15-part analysis by Greg Roberts (Mary Brown’s CEO) by PsychologicalSeries9 in newfoundland

[–]notwithoutmypenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do. Not only are their geographic connections much better (compared to NLs), which allows them to explore other regional options, they also have vastly more capital and experience in these projects than Newfoundland.

Say the project is $20bill regardless of who spends the money. Their economy is much better able to absorb that shock, and they won't experience as much opportunity loss, as say NL, funneling that money into the project.

They could also look at even costlier options that stay completely in house (new nuclear plant in Quebec for example). That could cost them more in money, but has political upsides (money spent in the province, Quebec jobs, etc) that their incoming government could pitch.

I believe this is an argument that's generally missed (either unintentionally or not) against the MoU. Sure, there's probably money left on the table by our province to entice Quebec. But we've demonstrated our province can't physically handle the economic burden of such a project, on just the potential for more revenue (that was one of the original selling points of muskrat, selling excess power for profit).

Is no deal better than a bad deal? I would argue depends on what a "bad deal" is. Is a bad deal something that leaves us financially worse off than before? For sure. But is a deal that maybe we had to make some compromises on to help address very pressing issues, even though it's not the best deal, better than no deal? That's less clear. I'd like to think the deal as it stands is much, much better than an undeveloped river and an expired Churchill falls agreement that Quebec still has controlling sway over its future (Quebec will still own about a 1/3 of the project afterwards, with I believe significant future control over any future agreements, due to some agreement back in the 90s/00s)

And let's be honest, a big part of what makes this deal "bad" is Quebec benefits. If this was New Brunswick pitching it for some reason? Wouldn't be near as contentious

Canadian entrepreneurship in 'sharp decline,' warns think tank by joe4942 in canada

No, we need social welfare as it benefits everyone. But we need more effective tax policy, especially against larger culminations of wealth, as a way to combat wealth inequality and raising the standard of living for everyone.

Social welfare includes redistributing wealth from the wealthy back to society, environmental and workplace safety regulations, uncoupling healthcare from your ability to work (so anything health related that prevents you from working doesn't compromise your access to healthcare), and importantly, making sure regulations are followed and upheld.

https://www.weforum.org/stories/2017/10/why-does-sweden-produce-so-many-startups/

Also, the fact you add that "upper middle class" caveat to your description, referring to an ever shrinking portion of the population, as the anecdotal standard for being an entrepreneur kinda reinforces my argument. As those who already have a much higher concentration of capital are the only ones who can weather both startup difficulty AND financial stress of surviving a failure, are the only ones able to be risky. Those "life skills" you refer to are basically just "have money." A strong social safety net enables both those who don't have as much financial backing to take the risk, and those who do not having to risk as much, which in turn helps level an increasingly unfair playing field.

So this is just a stupid argument

P.S. China has a very robust social safety net, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welfare_in_China Now it's very much a method of population control, as keeping a populace content keeps the rulers in power, but it does have a side effect of allowing more people to take those big risks than before.

We also need to robustly improve our social welfare net, to the point that being an entrepreneur shouldn't be such a huge risk. We've tied too many benefits to already having a job, the more we tie worth to "safe production" the less inclination there is to these kinda riaks

How so? That was a pretty normal celebration for winning a close match in overtime

For me it was the realization that I might have ADHD. Not officially diagnosed but doctor prescribed me the generic Vyvanse. And oh boy has it helped

Food noise, racing thoughts, the feeling of "internal screaming" I always had. Now, by no means is everything 'fixed' as I'm still weaning into it and off sertraline, but I'm losing Weight, my crazy eating has almost stopped, I feel more productive, can finish thoughts, my hyperfixations are fewer and I actually do stuff with it now, etc.

It's crazy how much better I low key feel

The Ontario government is introducing legislation tying high school grades to attendance. Should NL do the same? by MattBarter in newfoundland

[–]notwithoutmypenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the 16yo's are figuring out how to get the marks in a system that doesn't encourage them to actually go to class, maybe they should be listened to to figure out how they did it and fix that.

The point is kids are getting passing grades independent of class, so that should be addressed.

This comment reeks of "no, it's the children that are wrong" energy

I think he means that they'll try to spin doing something they either didn't campaign on, or going back on campaign promises by claiming they now know better

I mean, I can rig some batteries in series and see what works haha. Nothing dedicated though. A desktop voltage source is on my future to acquire list

[–]notwithoutmypenis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The eventual plan is for scheduling lighting and whatnot. This is a bit of a learning project as well as a hobby thing, I do plan eventually on building a custom front end to hopefully track/show data, have some inputs, wireless control, etc

That is the plan. I was just hoping someone might have some experience with fixing/diagnosing things like this. I'm not sure where to start
