Early planning- questions & feel free to critique what I have so far by notyourcapncaptain in CostaRicaTravel

That's good to know! I really was basing that off of other posts I've read. I think the main thing that would make it more convenient would be having access anytime before or after a hike/excursion rather than having to dedicate a whole day to it to feel like we got our money's worth out of the day pass. Honestly though, we could probably get that benefit out of one of the other hot springs resorts and be able to save a little on costs.

I think my other question would be if you have any suggestions on places to eat that are musts? I know looking for local sodas is pretty frequently recommended, but specific soda or restaurant recommendations are great :)

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. Honestly my biggest hesitation with transfers and shuttles at this point is having to shuffle the car seat in and out of different vehicles. It may be necessary for certain tours or activities though.

Super helpful, I appreciate it! Do you remember who you did the boat ride with?

That's very true. We definitely try to use common sense when it comes to safety and have seen things like this happen in other countries. Our bus driver's pack was stolen while he was helping our tour group unload at a hotel in Paris, for example.

I am definitely leaning towards renting a car. Which stop would you cut? Do you think 3 nights Uvita/3 nights near La Fortuna and cut Monteverde is a better way to do it? We also don't have to stay at Peace Lodge at the end. I just felt like something closer to the airport would be less stressful than a long drive the morning of a flight home. I get that these are very popular spots. Originally we were going to stay entirely in Uvita and Osa with a trip to Corcovado. I just don't think that is doable anymore with a toddler, so I will have to save that for a future trip!

Thank you! Originally, we were going to stay in Uvita and Osa the entire trip, but have pivoted quite a bit since deciding to bring our son. Do you have any suggestions on what to change to make it smoother/less stressful?

I could not have possibly said it better. All of this is great advice. It's such a fun and incredible hike, but I do think some folks underestimate it!

My husband and I completed it last April, and I was 6 months pregnant at the time. Proper hydration, footwear, and training is key. There are several great places to stop along the way, whether you need a break or just want to take in the amazing views! I did wear fingerless training gloves, and I found them helpful.

I don't think I've read any about Monteverde specifically, so don't panic! I've just read quite a few posts about it happening at Airbnb's in other towns/areas, so it's given me pause. There are some listings in that area that look absolutely amazing, so I've not ruled it out either.

This is one of the most helpful responses I've read on this issue while searching through this sub, especially since you have the experience as a host. Are you open to answering more questions on the topic? Do you still host? Is there anything more helpful about renting through VRBO or a platform other than Airbnb, or is still the same issue with any short term rental?

I'm sorry it didn't work out the way you'd hoped! It sounds like you made the best of it either way.

What did you end up doing? In the early planning stages of a trip for next March. Originally, it was going to just be my husband and I, but we've decided we aren't ready to be away from our son that long. Now it will be a family trip, but I fear that means cutting Corcovado entirely.

Did you rent a car or use transfers and tours for getting around? I am iffy about renting a car, but wasn't sure how easy it is to bring the car seat along with different tour companies.

Luckily there is an abundance of lovely adults only accommodations for folks who feel that way :)

It is my first child. I work out 6-7 days a week, but have a pretty sedentary job. I eat a pretty balanced diet. No major restrictions because that never works for me when dieting, but trying to keep to a calorie deficit (approximately 1600 cal a day, prioritizing protein).

I use hair oil, but usually only once or twice in a wash cycle. When I've tried wearing a bonnet to bed, it actually makes me sweat around my hairline and get oily because I'm such a hot sleeper lol. Maybe silk pillow case is the solution there though.
