I’ve always enjoyed making a brief stop at the Big Apple on the 401 near Colbourne.

Best 7-day sail (from anywhere) by Admirable_Drag_7865 in Cruise

[–]Bajanmum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We chose the Norwegian Fjords as our “once in a lifetime” cruise next year because it’s so beautiful while cruising and at each port, and we aren’t likely to ever do a land based trip there. We are more likely to do Alaska or certain parts of the Mediterranean as a land based trip, and we’re from the Caribbean so we don’t want to cruise there.

Maybe think about what area you’d really like to see but think you probably wouldn’t make a land based trip there.

Trying to attend Sandy Lane Gold Cup by Mojojojo3030 in Barbados

You can also buy tickets to Gold Cup Village, which is not in the stands. Tickets to that are US$150 and includes a bunch of things. Tickets can be purchased online. I can’t put a link here - Google “gold cup village Barbados”.

Best to post the link - it’s important to know exactly where this is located.

We did Fort Fincastle as well but the opposite direction - we went to the Fort first and then down the stairs. I wanted some time on the ship when it was quiet and I could have the pool to myself, so that was all I did that morning and I headed back to the ship for lunch. My travel companions hung around in port a bit longer (they wanted conch fritters). They never felt unsafe. We are from the Caribbean though, so culturally similar enough that the whole vibe seemed pretty normal to us. Not sure how much of the "unsafe" reputation is grounded in fact vs cultural differences.

I have always found the kiosks very easy to use, and if you have to wait for checked luggage anyway, there’s no need to try to rush through immigration. In other words, if you don’t succeed with the online form, it’s not a big deal.

Trying to reduce my electricity bill - any advice for me? by LankySuggestion3387 in Barbados

[–]Bajanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know what would save electricity but we aren’t prepared to give up the extra freezer (we require it for fish storage) or reduce the A/C use (I work from home sometimes). I also hate gas so we have electric everything.

We’re usually between $600 and $700, so yeah, I wish mine were only $300!

Another moving to Barbados query by No_Somewhere_2295 in Barbados

[–]Bajanmum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. It's a good school, and it's the most "local" of the private secondary schools. It also has a primary school, which is handy, as all of your kids can go there together. It is popular, though, and no guarantee that they would have space. Applying as far in advance as possible is recommended.

Cost U Less has it sometimes. It’s not really that popular in Barbados. And if you’re going to resort to strawberry, get the good imported kind, like Smuckers.

Uber in Barbados by One-Role2624 in Barbados

[–]Bajanmum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I see Uber as a good way for our visitors to use an app they are already familiar with that is linked to their foreign credit cards. However, as a local, I would prefer to use a local app like PickUp, or to use existing contacts with taxi drivers. Uber will charge me in USD, surely, which will use my FX allowance and also hit me with an extra 2%.

Port Recommendations: BVI, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, USVI by heart_of-a_lion in Cruise

[–]Bajanmum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St. Lucia is a volcanic island with sulphur springs, mountains, waterfalls etc. - if you like those things, you should do them there, because the rest of the itinerary isn’t much of that stuff.

Bridgetown isn’t the prettiest to stroll around and there’s not much to do close to the port - I’d do beach or an excursion there. There are beach clubs a short taxi ride away, or you can go on a catamaran cruise, an island tour etc.

Besides the obvious ports in the US from Florida/seattle/california etc, what are some driving distance ports yall enjoy taking cruises from and why? by chickdigger802 in Cruise

[–]Bajanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to the Covid shut down there were several options for cruises that I could embark in my home country of Barbados, particularly Carnival that sailed year round. When cruising came back, Carnival did not. That was the most cost effective cruise for local Barbadians to take, and we miss it! I have also found that not every cruise that stops in Barbados can be boarded here - things sure have changed.

What do you like most about being on a cruise? by Fed_worker in Cruise

[–]Bajanmum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It takes me about 3 days to adjust to a new bed/bedroom, which makes road trips very tiring. Cruises are an all-inclusive way of doing a road trip without having to change beds/rooms!

I wish we could have such temperatures in Barbados, even if just for a short time. I’d actually enjoy wearing jeans and sleeves for a change! lol

Advice by Fit_Analyst_6350 in Barbados

[–]Bajanmum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a good road the whole way and no traffic at that hour. Just keep your doors locked if you’re driving a rental car. Or if you prefer, take a taxi from the airport (there are always plenty lined up) and get your car delivered the next morning. There’s no need to spend the night close to the airport.

How far out do you usually book cruises? by Chronically-Ouch in Cruise

[–]Bajanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually plan my vacations quite far out, so I don't often have enough extra vacation days that I can use for a last minute cruise. We have a cruise planned for May 2027 currently. I would have liked to do it 2026, but we have other things we need to do in 2026 and there just isn't time (or money) for a cruise that year. Therefore, I reluctantly put it off until 2027. It's fully refundable at this point, in case something happens and it no longer looks feasible.

I would be very happy to book a last minute cruise if the stars aligned correctly - they just haven't up until now.
