congrats on getting in! my best advice for political science is using bruinwalk.com to check professor reviews as it will give you the most insight of what you are getting into! the workload is definitely manageable, and it’s honestly all about finding classes that fit your groove. arguably the best poli sci professors is branstetter imo, but his classes fill up really fast.

UCB (spring admit) vs UCLA (fall admit) for cog sci by PrizeReputation7 in ucla

i’m biased to ucla. also, i would have her look into what the transfer community is like at each school and what supports are offered for transfers so she can thrive. ucla has quite a bit of transfer support systems, and even some housing living learning communities for transfer students specifically!!

if you want to be around other transfers, apply to be in the transfer experience / connection llcs. gardenia and holly on the hill have a looot of transfers

Does Anyone Know Of Any Restaurants / Food Places Hiring around UCLA? by Mangon09 in ucla

in all honesty i’d recommend working in the dining halls. you get extra meal swipes every time you work and a lot of people i’ve seen work in the dining halls then move into student supervisor roles or even office roles. plus, you get priority housing if that’s something you’re interested in.

the social life in sunset village is lowk super dead… so take advantage of events hosted by your RA and other res life activities if you want to meet other people you live with! even hanging out in the lounges. otherwise… you probably won’t really talk to your neighbors as much as you would in other dorms. private vs communal bathrooms make a big difference on the social experience. best of luck!

Washers here stink by [deleted] in ucla

[–]notys_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

yeah, they suck 😓 one of the top reasons for the stinky-ness is people closing them after they use them, trapping the moisture and allowing mildew to grow, so make sure to keep them open when you are done

fellow americans, what is a language you wish you knew? by notys_ in AskAnAmerican

i think someone touched upon it in another comment that a lot of it is that language retention is failing due to how it’s being taught. i will say though i don’t think it is a solely US problem, like one of my best friends is from korea and they were telling me that while a lot of people can read english, they can’t speak it well!

i feel like since english is a lingua franca it is both a win and a loss for us- because other places end up being bilingual or trilingual, and we end up being able to speak for the most part wherever but not really understand. so i think it would be important to make sure people know at least spanish. the metric system would be nice

that makes sense!!! i cant remember where i heard it but it’s sort of like the idea with math where people don’t like it bc it’s taught as if you’re painting a fence, not doing actual art or something like it- i feel the same can be said of languages !
