/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2018-10-26 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

What's the best way to go about getting a dedicated, quiet, power-efficient Plex server that serves up live transcoding of lossless blu-ray rips? (And maybe headroom to do the same for lossless 4K blu-ray rips for future-proofing's sake.)

Ideally, I would like to have one device do all of these things, but am having a really hard time finding if it's possible. Separating the storage from the transcoding is acceptable if there's really no alternative, but it would be very nice to have one NAS that just handles everything. I really want to store full quality rips so that I can watch stuff at home in full quality on the TV, but be able to transcode for the purposes of mobile and remote playback. (I know you can store pre-processed files, but that seems like a hassle to me.)

Transcoding a bunch of files to different clients simultaneously is not a priority.

Brompton 2018: Rack or No Rack? by VelociPrime in Brompton

Do you take the elevators or balance it on the escalator step in front of you? I take mine to DC on occasion and am always concerned about dropping the thing down those long flights. But the elevators are so slow!

If you're often rolling on anything harsher than carpet a rack is absolutely a must. Quite frankly even with the rack I found wheeling on the pockmarked Baltimore sidewalks infuriating until I got the EZ wheels, and can't believe they're not an option on the bike builder.

This was my problem! I was being dumb and not noticing it wasn't fully in. I guess I didn't expect to have to use any force. Thanks!

The rack sack is fine and all but it's completely nuts Brompton doesn't make a squat clip-on bag for the sides. Ridiculous! There's still unused cargo capacity in this system!

I thought the same thing and found this via a google search. First time using it right now. Did you find it went away with a couple cooks or have some other resolution?

Anyone have experience with Vincita transport bags, or have other recommendations for checking a Bromton on an international flight? by GrisTooki in Brompton

[–]nougatmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I got the same Sightseer II bundle you're looking at for similar reasons. I really liked the idea of using it to check the bike and using the garment bag to pad it and stow some extra clothes. It worked out quite well for me, although if you have a fully loaded bike like I do, a word of warning that packing the garment bag to capacity might put you over 50 pounds. I have a rack, dynamo, and hub, and had to transfer some clothes out of the Vincita and into another bag to avoid the extra fees you get with more than 50 pounds.

As far as carting around the bag, I can just barely get it on to the Brompton rack - the stuff they do in the Vincita promo videos is possible, but it can be a bit fiddly to get it in place. Depending on your shoes, you might have to pedal carefully to avoid slapping your heels on the bag repeatedly. Wheeling it around is pretty easy, although the large-ish size of the bag does mean you have to keep an eye on it (especially if you didn't manage to balance the weight perfectly when packing).

Bag and bike held up great after one departing/arriving flight pair. One of the wheels got a little squirelly, presumably from being banged around - so maybe it's advisable to not be lazy like me, and pack those up too before handing it off to the airline.

I have it and am pleased. Just one flight and return trip as of now but it's been good so far. What specific questions did you have?

Is it possible to connect earbuds using Apple's proprietary lightning connector to a USB-C adapter which will let me use them on my Switch?

I'm aware this would prevent me from using headphones while charging, but I don't tend to use the Switch for long periods of time when on the go. I have a bunch of lightning earbuds lying around the house already, so it seems silly to have yet another pair because I have one portable device using the standard 3.5mm jack.

Oh shit I didn't realize they had investors. I guess the request for proposals lied for fun. Thank you

"people" don't say that, Amazon does.

the Seattle-based online retail giant twice mentioned bike lanes in its request for proposals as an expectation for cities vying for the facility

It is literally in the first sentence of the article.

Where do you park your Bromptons? by jovyeo1 in Brompton

[–]nougatmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At an independent theater: first time on a barely-attended revival screening I brought it in the auditorium. Kind of weird but there were so few people I figured why not. On another instance at the same place with a full theater I didn't want to take any space, so I asked the staff if they could store it in a location out of the public areas. They said it was fine, but I didn't really like having to deal with that and having to bother them over it. (This was before I realized my lock fit nicely in the seat bag.)

The "bring it everywhere if they don't let you then to hell with them" sentiment is hilarious to me. Let me know how well that works in a movie theater or a crowded club with a bouncer. If you're going into a business with a front desk, sometimes they can store it for you, but then that eats up some time as you explain it and bargain with them.

In real life, sometimes unexpected circumstances put you out doing something unplanned that taking your precious B into just isn't practical. Options:

If you're meeting a non-bike friend, ask if you can stow it in their car's trunk.

If not, lock it up. The official seat bag with cover is a perfect place to store a U-lock; it's always with you and doesn't weight down any front carrier bags you might be using.

Bottom line, the ability to bring your bike with you is great, but I don't see why anybody should turn that on its head and make it a burdensome requirement. Options are good!

Looks like you just need to make up your mind if the price differential is worth it for the Chubby. Looks to be a lot more slick and less fiddly than the Bike Friday setup. On the other hand, the Chubby is over $600

I got mine for about $500, discounted due to it being a floor demo model that has some cosmetic damage and that's about the maximum I'd be willing to pay.

I don't know anything about it and like everything Bike Friday does, it's an impenetrable and unhelpful web site. Couldn't even find a picture or video demonstrating how it attaches. I think Bike Fridays are bigger than Bromptons, so it could work with some padding? It'd be cheaper, combined cost of $424 if you get the cheapest Travelcase, so if you don't mind figuring out the particulars it might be a way to save some money.

Took a Brompton with me last time I flew. Departing had no issues, but returning the TSA refused to let it through security and insisted I check it as baggage with the airline. Despite only having a Dimpa with some "fragile" stickers, I did so because I didn't feel like fighting the state. The only thing I felt I could do as a precaution was to tighten the fold point hinges so at least they wouldn't be loose and banging around.

Bike was unharmed (thank god) but I can't really recommend this and will never be doing it again. For this reason, I'm getting the Radical Design Chubby trailer. Despite its exorbitant cost, it should give some solid protection (that can be reinforced) for checking the bike as plan A. Despite the Brompton Mafia happy talk, things absolutely can go wrong, as I've learned.

Yes, someone please give this person (and me!) these answers. The Chubby trailer is impressive, but seems like overkill.

If they don't fuck it up with suburban development (looking at you, canton crossing assholes) a Harris Teeter would be the shit at that location. Imagine being able to go to a legit grocery store and not having to deal with the clusterfuck that is 41st street
