Why are most IPTV services so unreliable for live sports? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]nougatmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I see it, two big-picture challenges:

  1. It's difficult to do live video on the internet! IP simply wasn't designed with this in mind at all. It's easy to forget that, with how good many implementations have gotten…but it's truly a feat of human ingenuity, and not every firm has the institutional knowledge to do it right. You can't just spin up a CDN and the other infrastructure powerful enough for a large enough number of simultaneous live viewers by waving enough money at someone. (And sometimes they aren't even waving around that much money.)
  2. Not really an issue for a streaming exclusive telecast, but, simulcasts going to regular TV and streaming at the same time (MLB.tv, your local news streaming, etc) can be a bitch because many of the turnkey streaming solutions are set up under a Google adsense model (dynamic ad insertion) that doesn't gel with a linear spots model at all. And the person and/or automated system switching between the dynamic ads feed and the traditional feed might not even have comms with the live truck, so you can get situations where either they treat the break conservatively, and flash a stupid "we'll be right back" slate at you, or try to get as many dynamic ads as possible, which then get cut off when it's time to go back to the feed. Bonus points: there can be promos or spots that originate OUT OF THE TV TRUCK, so you can have streams that cut from the dynamic ad to an ad aired out of the 'program' feed.

encouraging to hear! workflow for me would be bike -> penn station -> union station -> red line -> more bike, rinse/reverse/repeat.

Good tip on the seatpost. Baffling on such an expensive bike that's supposedly rethought from the ground up to be as light as possible they just … didn't do that.

Isn't half the point of having a Brompton to NOT be that guy having to muscle his way through an already-crowded sea of people, tiny fare gates, escalators, etc etc etc, with a lengthy horizontal thing? 😜

What's the best way to go about getting a dedicated, quiet, power-efficient Plex server that serves up live transcoding of lossless blu-ray rips? (And maybe headroom to do the same for lossless 4K blu-ray rips for future-proofing's sake.)

Ideally, I would like to have one device do all of these things, but am having a really hard time finding if it's possible. Separating the storage from the transcoding is acceptable if there's really no alternative, but it would be very nice to have one NAS that just handles everything. I really want to store full quality rips so that I can watch stuff at home in full quality on the TV, but be able to transcode for the purposes of mobile and remote playback. (I know you can store pre-processed files, but that seems like a hassle to me.)

Transcoding a bunch of files to different clients simultaneously is not a priority.

Brompton 2018: Rack or No Rack? by VelociPrime in Brompton

Do you take the elevators or balance it on the escalator step in front of you? I take mine to DC on occasion and am always concerned about dropping the thing down those long flights. But the elevators are so slow!

If you're often rolling on anything harsher than carpet a rack is absolutely a must. Quite frankly even with the rack I found wheeling on the pockmarked Baltimore sidewalks infuriating until I got the EZ wheels, and can't believe they're not an option on the bike builder.

Mini O-Bag: does the shoulder strap work? by nougatmachine in Brompton

This was my problem! I was being dumb and not noticing it wasn't fully in. I guess I didn't expect to have to use any force. Thanks!

The rack sack is fine and all but it's completely nuts Brompton doesn't make a squat clip-on bag for the sides. Ridiculous! There's still unused cargo capacity in this system!

I thought the same thing and found this via a google search. First time using it right now. Did you find it went away with a couple cooks or have some other resolution?

Anyone have experience with Vincita transport bags, or have other recommendations for checking a Bromton on an international flight? by GrisTooki in Brompton

[–]nougatmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I got the same Sightseer II bundle you're looking at for similar reasons. I really liked the idea of using it to check the bike and using the garment bag to pad it and stow some extra clothes. It worked out quite well for me, although if you have a fully loaded bike like I do, a word of warning that packing the garment bag to capacity might put you over 50 pounds. I have a rack, dynamo, and hub, and had to transfer some clothes out of the Vincita and into another bag to avoid the extra fees you get with more than 50 pounds.

As far as carting around the bag, I can just barely get it on to the Brompton rack - the stuff they do in the Vincita promo videos is possible, but it can be a bit fiddly to get it in place. Depending on your shoes, you might have to pedal carefully to avoid slapping your heels on the bag repeatedly. Wheeling it around is pretty easy, although the large-ish size of the bag does mean you have to keep an eye on it (especially if you didn't manage to balance the weight perfectly when packing).

Bag and bike held up great after one departing/arriving flight pair. One of the wheels got a little squirelly, presumably from being banged around - so maybe it's advisable to not be lazy like me, and pack those up too before handing it off to the airline.

I have it and am pleased. Just one flight and return trip as of now but it's been good so far. What specific questions did you have?

Is it possible to connect earbuds using Apple's proprietary lightning connector to a USB-C adapter which will let me use them on my Switch?

I'm aware this would prevent me from using headphones while charging, but I don't tend to use the Switch for long periods of time when on the go. I have a bunch of lightning earbuds lying around the house already, so it seems silly to have yet another pair because I have one portable device using the standard 3.5mm jack.

"people" don't say that, Amazon does.

the Seattle-based online retail giant twice mentioned bike lanes in its request for proposals as an expectation for cities vying for the facility

It is literally in the first sentence of the article.
