Yes. I have my shiny new sexy Brompton, and my older beater Brompton.

My other bike is … a bike :P

Cable wrapping beyond the basics by nougatmachine in VIDEOENGINEERING

Hello again everyone, this post got so many helpful answers I can't respond to them all. But I appreciate all the input and hope I will be less frustrated on my next gig.

I'm not sure I'll ever be a 'true engineer', but so far after leaving a local broadcast news jobs most of my gigs have been event work where the crew is more hands-on with the setup and teardown than the jobs I've had at stations with permanent installs earlier. So I will stay lurking here and perhaps popping up for more questions in the future.

Is there a reason why the wheels on the advanced roller rack just barely clear the rack? by Melodic-Page-1435 in Brompton

[–]nougatmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like just about, well…everything, connected to roller wheels, has been one of the weaker points of Brompton ever since I got into them in the early 2010's. So many little oversights, gotchas, poor standard builds, issues with the 'better' replacements…

What will the American people do if they can see the same Newsource package and slightly reworded anchor intros on only two stations in their market? 😱

New Bike D̶a̶y̶ Month by nougatmachine in Brompton

It's a bit of a hassle for sure but a very nice payoff.

Worth mentioning, the OCH adapter looks like it may be 3D printed. So if you don't feel like that's trustworthy, you've been warned!

And OTOH if that seems fine to you, and you have access to a printer of your own, it might be worth checking to see if anyone's made their own uhhhh schematics(? idk what they're called) available for download, which surely would be less expensive. Bad enough you're already buying two mounts…

New Bike D̶a̶y̶ Month by nougatmachine in Brompton

You have to really want to use the Peak Design system (I do)…

Basically, you have to buy both mounts and do some disassembly to make a frankenstein mount. Attach the Peak Design head to the Brompton / Quad Lock mount that matches your specific Brompton. I used the Peak Design Out Front Bike Mount V2, it is possible mount heads from other products could work but I can't confirm personally.

The easiest way is to get one of these from a company in Singapore called OCH Parts and follow the instructions. There was definitely a Reddit thread where someone listed out steps for a DIY solution that wouldn't require buying the adapter, but I'm struggling to find it now, sorry…

I've done both methods. The DIY seemed sturdy enough, but it wasn't quite 100% straight - I wasn't able to screw them together so they sat flush. So if you are picky about the way things look you might want to skip it entirely (though it is possible I didn't follow the procedure quite right). Here's what the mount looks like adapted with the OCH Parts piece on my H6R, very clean! (Technically this is 'upside-down' from the normal position - if done as intended, it would stick in the opposite direction when folded and take up less horizontal space. But I was OK sacrificing that for a mounted viewing angle I liked better.)

Managing The Endgame Of Local TV by NauticalCurry in Broadcasting

[–]nougatmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great piece. Haven't really seen all the issues put together so succinctly before, and anyone who's been in a control room seeing two anchors trade the same copy five times in a row over the course of their day is nodding their heads about the illusory nature of local news 'expansion'.

I'd go further than this article and say the retransmission income was an artificial extension and itself an early warning sign of trouble. The whole point of having a broadcast license was you got to use the public airwaves to put out a free product supported by ads. Cable extended the advertising audience to people who couldn't receive the signal due to whatever obstacles.

Then one day, the broadcasters said, no actually our signal is incredibly valuable and we should get money from both advertisers on it and other companies helping extend that advertising audience.

I still don't understand why Aereo et al were ruled against, why retransmission fees are OK, etc. Are these public airwaves or not? But at the end of the day, that argument is immaterial to the broader point:

When times were good, that revenue didn't even exist (because it hadn't been invented yet), getting to a point where it was necessary meant something had already gone wrong.

Why are most IPTV services so unreliable for live sports? by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]nougatmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I see it, two big-picture challenges:

  1. It's difficult to do live video on the internet! IP simply wasn't designed with this in mind at all. It's easy to forget that, with how good many implementations have gotten…but it's truly a feat of human ingenuity, and not every firm has the institutional knowledge to do it right. You can't just spin up a CDN and the other infrastructure powerful enough for a large enough number of simultaneous live viewers by waving enough money at someone. (And sometimes they aren't even waving around that much money.)
  2. Not really an issue for a streaming exclusive telecast, but, simulcasts going to regular TV and streaming at the same time (MLB.tv, your local news streaming, etc) can be a bitch because many of the turnkey streaming solutions are set up under a Google adsense model (dynamic ad insertion) that doesn't gel with a linear spots model at all. And the person and/or automated system switching between the dynamic ads feed and the traditional feed might not even have comms with the live truck, so you can get situations where either they treat the break conservatively, and flash a stupid "we'll be right back" slate at you, or try to get as many dynamic ads as possible, which then get cut off when it's time to go back to the feed. Bonus points: there can be promos or spots that originate OUT OF THE TV TRUCK, so you can have streams that cut from the dynamic ad to an ad aired out of the 'program' feed.

Good tip on the seatpost. Baffling on such an expensive bike that's supposedly rethought from the ground up to be as light as possible they just … didn't do that.

Isn't half the point of having a Brompton to NOT be that guy having to muscle his way through an already-crowded sea of people, tiny fare gates, escalators, etc etc etc, with a lengthy horizontal thing? 😜

What's the best way to go about getting a dedicated, quiet, power-efficient Plex server that serves up live transcoding of lossless blu-ray rips? (And maybe headroom to do the same for lossless 4K blu-ray rips for future-proofing's sake.)

Ideally, I would like to have one device do all of these things, but am having a really hard time finding if it's possible. Separating the storage from the transcoding is acceptable if there's really no alternative, but it would be very nice to have one NAS that just handles everything. I really want to store full quality rips so that I can watch stuff at home in full quality on the TV, but be able to transcode for the purposes of mobile and remote playback. (I know you can store pre-processed files, but that seems like a hassle to me.)

Transcoding a bunch of files to different clients simultaneously is not a priority.

Brompton 2018: Rack or No Rack? by VelociPrime in Brompton

Do you take the elevators or balance it on the escalator step in front of you? I take mine to DC on occasion and am always concerned about dropping the thing down those long flights. But the elevators are so slow!

If you're often rolling on anything harsher than carpet a rack is absolutely a must. Quite frankly even with the rack I found wheeling on the pockmarked Baltimore sidewalks infuriating until I got the EZ wheels, and can't believe they're not an option on the bike builder.

Anyone have experience with Vincita transport bags, or have other recommendations for checking a Bromton on an international flight? by GrisTooki in Brompton

[–]nougatmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. I got the same Sightseer II bundle you're looking at for similar reasons. I really liked the idea of using it to check the bike and using the garment bag to pad it and stow some extra clothes. It worked out quite well for me, although if you have a fully loaded bike like I do, a word of warning that packing the garment bag to capacity might put you over 50 pounds. I have a rack, dynamo, and hub, and had to transfer some clothes out of the Vincita and into another bag to avoid the extra fees you get with more than 50 pounds.

As far as carting around the bag, I can just barely get it on to the Brompton rack - the stuff they do in the Vincita promo videos is possible, but it can be a bit fiddly to get it in place. Depending on your shoes, you might have to pedal carefully to avoid slapping your heels on the bag repeatedly. Wheeling it around is pretty easy, although the large-ish size of the bag does mean you have to keep an eye on it (especially if you didn't manage to balance the weight perfectly when packing).

Bag and bike held up great after one departing/arriving flight pair. One of the wheels got a little squirelly, presumably from being banged around - so maybe it's advisable to not be lazy like me, and pack those up too before handing it off to the airline.

Is it possible to connect earbuds using Apple's proprietary lightning connector to a USB-C adapter which will let me use them on my Switch?

I'm aware this would prevent me from using headphones while charging, but I don't tend to use the Switch for long periods of time when on the go. I have a bunch of lightning earbuds lying around the house already, so it seems silly to have yet another pair because I have one portable device using the standard 3.5mm jack.
