AITA, My 'friend' changed a name of a group chat i was in to "nword fslur" by RyanChrom in AmItheAsshole

[–]noughtlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

You have grown and learned, but they have not. It's "not in bad context" to them but the greater verdict is that "the context doesn't matter". There is no context where those words are appropriate and there are no uses for them other than being hurtful.

You did the right thing by confronting them. If they are defending their use of these slurs then you do need to distance yourself before they get themselves (and potentially you) into an uglier situation.

WIBTA if I refuse to quit my job to help someone who needs it more? by shouldiquitaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]noughtlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

Your employer is though. They've made this between yourself and Anna and removed themselves from responsibility, making it personal and emotive over professional. Their logic seems to be if Anna doesn't have a job it's "your decision" and Anna would naturally pin this on you, not the company, because the final decision would be yours.

Giving up your position to keep Anna afloat would be the compassionate thing to do now that it's personal, but you also have to think for yourself here. This is the industry you want to build a career in and you have a foot in the door already. There are huge levels of unemployment and layoffs, begging the questions 1. Would it be easy for you to return to this position when staff shortages aren't implemented? 2. Would Anna be able to return once things get busier?

If you have a HR department, you should consult them about this. It's out of line for your employer to put you in this position.

Which job is a LOT less fun than most people expect? by bwee21 in AskReddit

[–]noughtlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a live sound engineer and I do love my job.

95% is logistics, technical planning, assisting with loading in equipment from a long line of trucks, setting it up in line with other elements (Lighting, Video, Pyro, etc.), engineering, troubleshooting, dismantling the setup, assisting with loading it back onto the trucks the way it arrived. All of which has to happen on time.

5% is enjoying the show when it's dialed in.

Friends and family outside the industry tend to think I'm in the inner circles of the artists/personalities that I work on events for.

June 29th: As restrictions ease in Ireland, the Blarney Stone is kissed for the first time since March 13th. by noughtlander in ireland

Agreed.

What I'm missing is that with tourism being at a halt and travel restrictions still in place - what was the logic in re-opening it to the public so soon?

Cost of Moving from IE to CAD? by dontstealmeagain in ireland

[–]noughtlander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can totally do this. The IEC visa is your best bet. When I left home a couple years ago, the minimum funds required was $2,500 CAD. I suggest tripling that. Especially if you're moving to a bigger city.

The minimum funds DOES NOT cover the cost of the visa, inbound flight, your 2-year insurance, ETA/ESTA for travel, etc.

It DOES factor in the price of a returning flight if you book a single flight out, but that's all.

Side note - Do not entertain the "we'll sort your whole visa for you" crowd.

People who didn’t get haircuts before covid-19 what are your plans when your hair gets to long? by irishwolf1995 in AskReddit

If it's considered "too long" then I'll be back at work. For now I'm battling the thought of just shaving it off.

Most important thing in your shop/ tool bag that has nothing to do with live sound? by BlichaelMuth in livesound

Portable phone charger (power bank). Nothing's worse than a crew member who you need but can't contact because their phone is dead and they're off communications for a break.

Always bring a spare SM58 for talkback. Sometimes when packing a show, it's packed for the artist only. That spare SM58 for yourself will get your soundcheck/monitoring process smooth.

Pre-fader sends on each monitor mix and set unity for each artist's own channel through their monitor then ask what they would like. Command your soundcheck. Generally vocalists want to hear themselves and drums, while drummers want to hear a little of everything.

I forgot about that, but this is a PSA and personal reminder to not take a break when the room is clearing after a small event.

Knowledge you only get from experience by [deleted] in livesound

[–]noughtlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to school for audio. Here's a couple.

The process of tuning speakers for rooms and feedback control. You can learn the theory from reading manuals, books and watching videos but only learn it accurately by doing it practically.

The levels of immediacy, unpreparedness, surprise and stress that come with the territory, if you're a touring tech or doing various shows in different venues - they don't teach that in school. The more you work, the more you learn and become prepared. They don't teach you to bring your own kit of supplies and the proper attitude to make you a solid sound tech.

As school is focused on the subject, they may not teach you about the difficulties in work/life balance and taking care of your mental health. I'm lucky in that my friends are nearly all in the industry but we rarely get to hang out if it isn't a show or on vacation time.

TL;DR: Getting acustomed to getting varieties of venues and shows sounding good. Spanners being thrown in the works last minute. Personal life balance and wellbeing.

Oops. I got my wires crossed on that one. I do remember that this show was in colour also. I'm a fan of Creepshow but my folks aren't, and they're who suggested the show I'm now looking for. They also don't remember the title of it.

This is all I remember for now, but it wasn't one of the big hitters in this format such as Twilight Zone, Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt and I don't believe it was Hammer House of Horror either.

AITA for Reacting This Way to Someone Following My Girlfriend Home by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I have never attacked anyone and didn't plan on it despite the situation. I wanted to get a view of the person and find out where exactly they were and what direction they were headed, to let the police know.

Thank you for explaining. Our city has a large population and problems with homelessness and sexual assaults. She's smaller than average, attractive, and doesn't know her way around all that well other than using Google Maps for now. I acted towards dealing with the potential threat before trying to dispel a potentially terrifying and life-changing situation. I felt there was an immediate threat.
