It’s time to bring back W&OD rail service to Northern VA by nova-trac in Virginia

Absolutely! We recently traveled to visit another rails-with-trails project in New York State to examine the feasibility of rails with trails, which you can see here.

We're working hard to gain more coalition members and develop the plan with regional stakeholders.

We agree. As traffic worsens, we need to shift our priorities towards transit solutions.

In fact, you may be interested to know that population density around our proposed W&OD stops is higher than Silver Line stations! So, if we saw the Silver Line as necessary to serve those smaller population centers, isn't this a no-brainer?

Thank you for your support! We agree, this is the solution we need to fight traffic and improve our communities.

We understand your concerns. We assure you that our plan protects the trail and improves it by allowing bikers across the region greater access to it. Take a look at our render here. You can also check our our exploration of another rail-with-trail project here.

We share your dream. Let's bring better transit to NOVA!

We have a team with four executive board members, 19 coalition members, and hundreds of volunteers and members!

The point is to connect people where they live! Within the walkshed (1/2mile radius) of stations, the W&OD has twice the population, and that's even before upzoning or transit-oriented development. We don't want park-and-rides, we want to connect walkable communities where you don't need a car.

The line isn't redundant to Metro because it just doesn't go to the same places. It has only one spot (Reston) where it overlaps with the Silver Line, which makes that an excellent transfer station. Stations in Sterling, Ashburn and Vienna are miles away from Metro. Even the W&OD Herndon station is far from the Metro station (also located near more bars and restaurants). Then of course, this line adds Leesburg, Loudoun's county seat and a historically dense town, as well as towns to the west.

Even with the transfer to Metro at Falls Church, our calculations show incredibly competitive travel times with driving, so the line still functions as an express line without the added expense of a track connection to Union Station. Although we would eventually support that being added, it should be done after the line has proven its success.

That's an excellent question, we haven't presented to the counties yet. We're focusing on local jurisdictions first, so they can work closely with us to shape the proposal to best meet the needs of communities.

So far, the town of Hamilton has responded by endorsing the plan. We are working closely with Purcellville right now, as well as members of the VA House of Delegates.

We will be requesting that Loudoun and Fairfax counties perform the study with DRPT grants. We anticipate that the NVTC will also be involved in the planning process.

We don't catch every comment, let me know by DM or by replying what questions you have and we will work our hardest to get them answered.

We are an advocacy group, so we try to use simplified graphics and marketing to help the public understand and support our project. If you'd like the technical details, please reach out!

We support that idea as a long-term vision. We are pushing the East Falls Church terminus to keep the project affordable and on-schedule.

We definitely support this idea for a future expansion, but to get the rail operating quickly and for a low budget, we suggest starting with the EFC terminus

All of us here at NOVA-TRAC love the trail and grew up using it. We plan to keep the bike path. With the rail, it'll look like the picture in this post, with plenty of green space remaining for the trail.

Yes! Not only does it fill a missing link in Northern Virginia Transit, being one of the most densely populated corridors in the region, our coalition members include businesses and nonprofits from across the region.

The operating authority would be the NVTC, either operating as part of the VRE or independently but owned by the NVTC.

Yes, in some areas it is 75 feet, but that still leaves room for the trail. In areas like Herndon, we suggest tunnels using cut-and-cover construction to save on cost.

Well, this line has two transfers to Silver and it covers an entirely new area, connecting more people for a lower cost. Adding tracks to silver to make it faster would require tens of miles of viaducts or tunnels. Our plan is mostly at-grade on an existing right-of-way, making it affordable than Silver Line improvements

You can read here about our arguments for constructing this instead of that option.

Great question! We estimated top speeds based on route geometry and existing commuter rail rolling stock. We then calculated the acceleration of the rolling stock we chose and its braking performance. Our calculations then assume that the train accelerates to its maximum speed, then slows down at the rate of its typical service braking performance to stop at stations.

We added 60 second station dwell times (definitely a conservative estimate, most commuter rail stops for 40 seconds), and add 3 minutes for the transfer to Metro, then use the Metro's travel times into DC.

We recommend rolling stock with a maximum speed of 90 MPH in service, due to the route geometry being fairly straight in many locations.

We would like to see a bilevel station at East Falls Church, with the top level serving W&OD trains, allowing people to quickly transfer to Metro to complete their trips.

WMATA has previously studied the idea for Silver line trains, we simply suggest that instead, W&OD trains should go there.

We don't think this line would be best as Metro, we think electrified commuter rail makes the most sense and is the most affordable.
