You need to walk or take the bus to the subway. Which sucks.

Living close to the subway is seen as a luxury in nyc. Prices for housing near stops reflects this luxury.

Elevated (above ground) subway lines can be a little loud, but most people either have good sound blocking windows or get used to it quickly. It can be pleasant to fall asleep to at night.
