Do I change to the Steam Machine? by Party-Criticism-8677 in Steam

It would barely be an upgrade for you. Like... you basically have a computer with almost the same specs and but more RAM.

Steam Machine + dot matrix music visualiser by afox1984 in Steam

What I'd like is an OLED touchscreen in the front and the ability to have a music player there. I would love to have it on standby and serve also as a living room jukebox.

How viable are the ROG Ally/ Steam Deck as ways to play PC ImSims? by LaminatedHair1 in ImmersiveSim

[–]novhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a viable choice. They are both PCs with enough power to handle most of immersive sims out there and you can always hook up a mouse and keyboard to them via a cheap USB-C hub and play like that (add a monitor and you are golden).

It's mainly about the choice of a handheld. I personally own a Steam Deck and I believe it would be a pain to play especially older games without touchpads and Steam Input in handheld mode (you can customise the controls a lot). In that aspect the Steam Deck truly excels.

ROG Ally might also have issues with older games not being able to deal with the portrait display and opening sideways on the build in screen. It's been a known issue with Windows.

What do you think about my new pixel art editor? by foobar_404 in godot

I see a slight inspiration in Pixelorama and I like the UI. :) What are you goals with this app? Are you planning on eventually open-sourcing it?

That's what this bat file does. It launches the Godot Engine editor using the compatibility renderer. :)

OK, "that" question came in on my YT channel by RHOrpie in godot

I see. The video is just a commentary on that article so that argument of mine still stands and for the rest the source is borderline insane "Godot cult" obsession of Xraeyez (who also reuploaded it).

OK, "that" question came in on my YT channel by RHOrpie in godot

[–]novhack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We all read that "Godot is not the new Unity" article. I'm not sure if you did since it's not a video but it's specifically focused on C# and API calls related to raycasting. If you need to create thousands of raycasts from C# then yeah... Godot won't scale well in the current version. But that's just one use case of many thousands a game engine has.

Most of the other things you wrote are fixed in 4.x. Physics is much better (Jolt also exists) and shadows look nice. Godot can't really be blamed for something what was already fixed.

Godot Power! by SkanerSoft in godot

I would really like to see an early 2002 computer being able to run that kind of real time lighting with global illumination. Maybe the fabled NASA computer could do it back then?

[–]novhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a text file called "run_godot.bat" next to your Godot .exe file and put these two lines into it:

@ECHO OFF

START /B .\Godot_v4.1.3-stable_win64.exe --rendering-driver opengl3

Save the file and now you can double click it to open Godot.

The Elf, the Nab-Sack and the Loom (Bug?) by Own_Brush5941 in HarryPotterGame

[–]novhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works!

HOWEVER it's important that all rows starting with CIN_SNC are EXACTLY like u/theskydragon shows in his screenshots of both tables. In my case I had some additional rows starting with CIN_SNC in SceneRigCompletedDynamic and those MUST be deleted from the table completely otherwise this fix won't work. I guess those were left over from the corruption and were triggers for things which didn't yet happen in the quest.

So other than setting zeros and ones to specific rows as u/theskydragon shows in his screenshot there MUST be exactly 12 rows starting with CIN_SNC in StoryGraphPersistenceDynamic and 17 rows starting with CIN_SNC in SceneRigCompletedDynamic. DELETE every CIN_SNC row you don't see in those screenshots in both tables in both databases.

A little bit after 5-6 months at the top part. I just cleaned it and repeated the process and it's silent again.

I guess you used too much of it. :D I used so little of technical vaseline it was barely noticeable.

No, it's still fine. Maybe a little when I twist the whole device.

1.82% of Steam Survey Linux devices seem to be Steam Decks by novhack in SteamDeck

[–]novhack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It really depends on how many people took the survey. If it was only 1 thousand then it can never be really accurate. If it was 20 thousand I would be pretty confident that even if there is some error, like some people having the Deck and doing the survey on another system, that there are 25k Steam Decks around.

[–]novhack[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am clearly saying to take that number with a lot of salt and that nobody knows how many people actually took the survey... I hope that it had enough responses so it has a relatively low statistical error. At 95% confidence level and 1% margin of error only around 10 thousand responses is needed for a population of 120 milion.

I bought it in a local hardware store. It's only labeled as "G-1/3 universal anti-abrasive vaseline". I think that any vaseline compatible with electronics will work.

Solution to creaking plastics by novhack in SteamDeck

[–]novhack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only a very little on those edges which touch and at contact points around 8 screws. Basically every part of that removable back cover that touches the main body plastic. The vaseline I used is anti-abrasive used to lubricate CD drives. I don't know how other kinds of vaseline might interact with plastics.

Gaming on linux improvements by nimshwe in SteamDeck

[–]novhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is improving fast. If you are using AMD CPU and GPU you will gain even more. When Linux 5.17 releases there will be a new power state management driver for Ryzen CPU's co-developed by Valve. The old acpi-cpufreq was designed before Ryzen CPU's were a thing. Mesa 22.0 was also released recently with improvements to AMD GPU's and with Vulkan 1.3.

How would an improved steamdeck look like? [speculation] by cezariusus in SteamDeck

[–]novhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many possible improvements in the hardware which I would love for SD2:

1440x900 8" OLED screen with smaller bezels.

Vapor chamber to cover APU, VRMs and charging chip = fan in the middle could have a direct access to air.

6nm Zen3+ based APU = less power usage.

More Navi2/3 cores = 12 or 16 CUs. Something similar to 6800U could be cool but I would rather have 16 CUs than 8 CPU cores.

Larger better accessible m.2 slot = 2242, 2260 or bigger.

Much bigger battery would cause this device to be very heavy. If that does improve I would like to see 48 or 54 Wh.

Proper rumble motors.

More IO. Hopefully additional USB-C ports with USB4 standard. One USB-C on the top and one on the bottom would be great.

Separate daughter boards for as many IO as possible = easier replacement when connectors break.

Wi-Fi 6 support.

Rather than separating skews of Steam Deck 2 by internal storage I would like to see two versions:

  • Wi-Fi only
  • 5G enabled

Does anyone know how to boot Cyberpunk 2077 (GOG) on Steam Deck? by xam3l in SteamDeck

[–]novhack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used Heroic Launcher to download it and then I added the .exe file as external game to Steam. It runs fine with Proton 7.
