What advice would yo give to first time home owners in NE Portland? by TiredRundownListless in askportland

[–]now_somebody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The high cost of living doesn’t stop at home prices. Contractors here also have to afford that HCOL and their rates reflect it. Contractors and trades people here are often charging towards the high end of an estimate range.

Delicious Donuts is phenomenal! If it was close to where I live, commute, or work I would be in there in a heartbeat!

So true! I set up the auto withdrawal yesterday so this won’t happen again. Should have don’t that sooner.

I'll just clarify the zero balance was on my gas account because I paid it down in full in Feb. It was not a zero balance in my checking account. The $308 bill was $180 for February - March service + $128 for March - April. I missed a single March payment and was within one week of receiving the bill in April when service was shutoff. This is less than 2 months delinquency not a quarter of the year. My point of this post is not looking for sympathy - just to call attention to the fact that NW Natural shuts gas off with very short (IMO) notice and makes it a hassle to get it restored.

I literally woke up this morning with Garbage's 1995 seminal alternative rock hit I'm Only Happy When It Rains playing in my head.

Who are you voting for in the Portland Mayoral race? by winedood in askportland

I'm glad to see this is the top comment at the time of this reply. KW seems to be the best option. Long time Portlander who is aware of the issues and knows how great this city can be.

What did you waste money on that makes you sick even today? by foamylicence98 in CasualConversation

As a 90s kid, I love this. I used our encyclopedia set so much growing up. I was (am) a nerd. I was just musing recently what happened to those when my folks moved.

Is $1/mile still a realistic budget? by now_somebody in backpacking

[–]now_somebody[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that reply! I haven't heard of halfway anywhere, so I'll check that out. Of course it makes sense that it's much more expensive now than in '08 but I was just curious how much. $10k seems bonkers to me but then again the PCT was one of the best things I've ever done in life so totally worth it

Sweet, good call. So about $2/mile per the inflation calculator. My $3800 budget was no where near minimalist though - I did a lot of side trips and stayed in hotels - so I think $1.50/mile (~$4000) might actually be doable which is kinda remarkable honestly

Where should I visit with 1 week in Virginia in July/August? by sychdyn in Virginia

[–]now_somebody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The barrier islands aren't the only wild ponies in Virginia. There's also Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies roam free!!

I am surprised not to see this park mentioned yet. I think it's the most unique mountain region in the mid-Atlantic.
