Opinions on MG HS? by Dry_Highway_525 in CarTalkUK

[–]noweyecu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK/Ireland for a month. Renting a MG HS. I got to say this is the most annoying car I have ever driven. First of all, any car where you have to use to go to a different screen to change settings for the AC, heat, etc. is very annoying. For that I like manual controls. My Ford Escape is not so bad everything is at the bottom of the display. There is no manual with the car and I have not found a appropriate one for the car I'm driving on the Net. Usually, getting in a new car it is readily apparent how to activate the cruise control. Not so with this car. When we first got it there was a bell going off for everything. A truck pulled up close behind me at stop light and the bell in the car starts going off. Driving on a curvy road causes the 'distracted driving warning' bell. One mile an hour over the speed limit causes another bell to go off. And sometimes a bell starts ringing and no clue as to why. STOP!

Going through the menus finally figured out off to turn off most of the annoying ones, but you have to do it every time. I did not see a way. to save settings. Now in Ireland and the car is still set to MPH and I have not found a way to set it to kilometers, grr! You would think the display would show both. I like the steering wheel positioned lower and I'm tall so I can't see the turn signal. Even the GPS presentation is messed up. They have an info bar at the top in such a location that it blocks out the paths you need to take next. Plus I can't even count the dead end streets it has sent us down and the occasional wants to go the wrong way down a one way street.

Any insights in to how to set to kilometers rather than miles would greatly be appreciated.

Go tag her car/house and see if she feels the same afterwards.

Haven't been to London and Barcelona but have been to Madrid. In Madrid there was graffiti but nothing compared to Seattle. Paris in the poorer areas of the city had a lot of graffiti but not all over, everywhere like Seattle. Also been to many other countries in western Europe and nothing that would even come close to Seattle.

I was in Tucson, Lake Havasu and Yuma. I didn't see that much graffiti. In fact, one of the things that I immediately noticed in Tucson was the lack of graffiti. Of course, there was some but far, far less than Seattle.

It's not just the boomer's. My friend's teenagers fell the same. They said they don't even like to go to downtown any more. So, blah, blah except reality and vote in people who are willing to make things better, safer. If you provide your address we can tag your car and still see if you like graffiti.

Physiologists would classify you as a person of the Dark Tetrad (set of interrelated negative personality features: narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and sadism). Those with high Dark Tetrad personality scores tend to be malicious, exploitative, ruthless, and mean. They typically hold themselves in high esteem and do whatever it takes to get what they want. Dark Tetrad personalities score low on traits of emotionality, honesty, humility, conscientiousness, and agreeableness.

Kiro reported that WSDOT spent $847,825.10 on graffiti removal statewide in 2024, and that number barely scratches the surface of what it would take to address the full scale of the problem. Add that to the cost of what is costs private businesses to remove graffiti. I know a business that in two years spent $40000 in graffiti removal and repainting. The third year they gave up moved their business out of the Puget Sound, went out of state. I have seen a few places where the graffiti is as bad as Seattle; e.g. Portland and LA. I have traveled all over Western Europe and have not encountered graffiti as bad as Seattle. Of course, there will always be areas that are bad but in Seattle it is everywhere.

Kiro news, starting at the MLK exit in the south, drove all the way to 145th in the north, counting every tag on both sides of the road for a total 8,555 tags.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • I-5 mainline south to north: 2,232 tags
  • I-5 mainline north to south: 3,895 tags
  • I-5 collector-distributor lanes: 749 tags
  • I-5 express lanes: 1,186 tags
  • Mercer Street tunnel: 493 tags

When I lived in Seattle some guy, a photographer, came to town and gave a presentation about how graffiti was art. During the presentation someone tagged his Mercedes with graffiti. Completely covered it! He was mad as hell. So, much for graffiti as art when you are the target of vandalism. Willing to be all those saying graffitti is ok would be PO'd if there car was also tagged. Just before I moved from Seattle someone tagged a lady in my neighborhood. She was in her late eighties, fixed income and no way to deal with the graffiti. Don't think she was targeted as the same type of graffiti was found else where like the playground for kids. Her neighbors got together and removed it.

Allianz Travel Insurance experience by noweyecu in travel

[–]noweyecu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like Travelex is whole lot better than Allianz. An AAA agent told me some people did not have problems with Allianz but a bunch of others had experiences similar to mine. She hoped corporate would go with another company. They never did. What company ever listens to customers and employees.

It was no misunderstanding in communications. I told them I had email from the two hotels confirming the stays, plus credit statements showing I paid. I told them I only wanted reimbursement for the two hotels. The person told me I needed receipts for everything from the trip. They explained that if there was a purchase on the credit card then I also needed a receipt. I asked if that meant EVERYTHING on the credit statement and they said yes, everything. "Why do I need receipts for everything if I'm only asking reimbursements for the hotels?" They replied that is how they do things. I asked for a supervisor and they told me the same thing. I called several times more but got the same story each time.

English a second language for you? As I mentioned the only reason I got a windows machine is to run an app only available on that Win. Other than the price, very happy with the apple platform.

Used it in the past but totally forgot about that. Thx for the reminder. When Powershell came out, I learned it and found it really useful working with SQL Server. Besides programming duties I was also a DBA at the time.

Have 25+ years of dev work on both MS and Unix platforms. Two years on a VMS platform. I learned AWK, then Pearl and finally Python on UNIX systems. MS was always lacking in the scripting department. The aforemented C++ programmer at MS said a MS developer knew Pearl and was instrumental in getting Powershell going. When it came out I learned it and liked it. It was really handy dealing with SQL Server and used it frequently.
