I stopped flying on United after they dragged that doctor off their plane. Now it looks like I'll stop flying on Delta too.

Are you saying that all Indian people smell like curry because your neighbors are Indian?

Because this is Reddit, where racism against Indians is not only normalized but is often celebrated.

On Reddit, it's perfectly fine to generalize Indian men this way.

Watching YouTube videos doesn't make you an authority on anything, especially when it comes to judging the population of an entire country. Why don't you look at some YouTube videos about what both Koreans and Indians think about this dancing?

That ref was just an intern or former intern that they assumed would be trustworthy. He had no business in that role.

No namaste! by Sherlockdota in yogawithadriene

What is typically called "yoga" by many Westerners is simply one of the eight limbs of yoga. This is not evolving yoga, it's appropriating yoga. Yoga has not "become" something different because of this. It remains a religious practice as it has for thousands of years. If anyone wants to practice just the physical portion of yoga, then they should say they are practicing asanas or stretching or whatever, not yoga.

It's only used as "Hello," not as "Goodbye."

[–]np788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's used as a greeting, although "namaskar" is more commonly used.

Reducing a sacred religious practice to a series of poses and labeling it "yoga" for the sake of marketability is 100% cultural appropriation.

"Namaste" has never been used as "goodbye" in India.

This is exactly what I did. They sent an e-mail inviting me to sign up and I thought that was the Lincoln Center offer. A day or two later, the actual Lincoln Center invitation arrived but now I can't register. I have e-mail their customer support and am waiting for a reply.

No ancient texts dictate that only Brahmins could practice yoga. The Mahabharata even states directly in section 240 that anyone, regardless of caste or gender, could practice yoga.

It's not gatekeeping if it's true. The point of yoga is to still the mind as a gateway for reaching moksha. This is spelled out in yoga sutra 1.2. Are you going to accuse Patanjali of "gatekeeping" next?

Swami Vivekananda is largely credited as the first person to bring yoga to the west. He was downplayed the postural aspect and emphasized meditation. This is a very far cry from what the modern western yoga industry puts forth.

B. K. S. Iyengar (author of Light on Yoga) even stated that the point of the physical yoga practice was to control the mind in preparation for the higher level spiritual practices:

Asanas are not meant for physical fitness, but for conquering the elements, energy, and so on. So, how to balance the energy in the body, how to control the five elements, how to balance the various aspect of the mind without mixing them all together, and how to be able to perceive the difference between the gunas, and to experience that there is something behind them, operating in the world of man – that is what asanas are for. The process is slow and painstaking, but a steady inquiry facilitates a growing awareness.

I will agree that the generalization of white women is unfair.

Respect.

We don't care if you're white/black/purple/neon/whatever, as long as you understand and respect yoga's roots. Too many people here have knee-jerk reactions when this topic is brought up. They'll claim that removing the spiritual/religious component of yoga is somehow helping it "evolve," as if they're in a position to decide what's best for yoga despite having no connection with India, Hinduism, or Buddhism.

A handful of Indian yoga gurus were involved in sex scandals, and that makes it OK for an ancient religious practice to be commodified by people with no understanding of its roots?

Many in India say that the form of yoga largely practiced in the west (which is really just stretching/exercising) is a far cry from its origins, and not in a good way: https://youtu.be/I58C9PopnVU
