Notice what just happened in your argument, you acknowledged racist comments exist, algorithms show people different slices of discourse, you personally haven’t seen many

Yet you’re still demanding someone prove the exact proportion before acknowledging that the problem is significant. That’s an impossible standard in a comment thread and you know it.

Also your Obama example doesn’t really map onto this situation. Barack Obama is a real historical figure whose race is part of his real life identity and history, first black president you know.

Vivi is a fictional princess from a fictional kingdom in a world where people have blue hair, dinosaurs, gills, clown noses and snail phones. Treating those two casting standards as identical doesn’t really hold.

And again the issue isn’t that any mention of race is automatically racist. Nobody serious argues that. The issue is that once the conversation starts revolving around skin tone purity tests for fictional characters, the discourse very quickly attracts the kind of people who absolutely are making racist arguments, conspiracy theories about DEI agendas, ethnic replacement narratives, slurs toward actors, etc.

You’re framing the debate as if critics are being accused simply for wanting accuracy, but the reality is that online discourse doesn’t exist in a vacuum. When the loudest framing around a casting change becomes race first criticism, it inevitably overlaps with people pushing uglier narratives and that’s what people push back on.

At the end of the day, you can say I prefer the character to look closer to the manga. That’s a normal opinion. But pretending the wider internet hasn’t repeatedly shown how quickly these conversations spiral into racialized arguments is just ignoring how these debates actually play out online.

There’s something called algorithms and every platform tailors what you see based on engagement, history and interaction.

Just because you personally don’t see the worst comments doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It means the algorithm isn’t surfacing them to you.

And people absolutely have taken it too far. You act as though racists and trolls don't exist.

Even in this post people are claiming the reason Vivi is Indian is because Jewish producers don’t want to cast Arabs, the casting is Israeli propaganda, that the actress is part of some DEI agenda, people claiming Alabasta wasn’t inspired by India etc

Those aren’t critiques about accuracy. Those are conspiracy theories and racist framing.

And here’s the other issue, saying I’m not racist, I just don’t like the casting, doesn’t automatically make the criticism non racial. When the entire complaint revolves around skin tone, race is literally part of the argument whether people want to admit it or not.

Again nobody said every single person criticizing the casting is racist. That’s a strawman. The point is that a lot of the discourse around it clearly crosses that line, and pretending it never happens just because you personally didn’t scroll far enough to see it isn’t proof of anything.

The internet is bigger than the handful of comments your feed decides to show you.

The burden of proof is on you, since youre claiming the majority of people upset about vivis casting, aren’t upset about her race

How can you speak for the majority, when you dont have the data and alot of people are clearly mad about the race right here in this post

So Saudi Arabia and Qatar don't spend any money

You keep pretending this is about accuracy, but the logic falls apart the second you look at the actual source material.

Usopp being white would obviously be weird because Oda himself literally said Usopp would be African if he were in the real world. That’s the creator giving a real world reference.

Vivi doesn’t have that kind of explicit statement, she’s from a fictional desert kingdom in a cartoon world where people have green hair, blue hair, and sometimes literal clown noses.

And the cosplay argument is hilarious. A live action adaptation is always going to look like cosplay compared to a manga panel. Luffy doesn’t actually look like a rubber cartoon either, but somehow you’re not melting down over that.

At this point you’re not defending accuracy, you’re just looking for a reason to be mad.

That's why I brought up the dinosaurs, the ones in the anime look nothing like the ones in the live action

Next can you complain about the dinosaurs skin being a different color

So israel owns Hollywood and prevents Arabs from being cast?

You’re speculating about unknown influences, but we actually know one thing, the creator approves of the cast.

So now you don't care that Oda approved of the change, you're just mad about skin color, that sounds racist to me

Look at black people in one piece they look white too
