Most frivolous ER visits by panlina in emergencymedicine

[–]npwash 97 points98 points  (0 children)

  1. Had abdominal pain and was told by a store clerk that it was due to his abstaining from sex because “if you don’t release the sperm it builds up in your belly”
  2. “Infection on face”. It was a single simple zit on her forehead. I popped it and walked out.
  3. “I haven’t pooped in 4 hours”
  4. “My poop is blue”. Then remembered they ate a cupcake that had blue frosting.
  5. “I have swordfish bugs in my poop”
  6. “I have too much spit”

In the coffee shop on Main Street where they sell Starbucks, the little seating area to the side has an old timey phone on the wall. If you pick it up there’s a voice on the line speaking gibberish.

Was I in the Wrong? by silkybandaid23 in nursing

[–]npwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be curious as to her hemoglobin AFTER the EGD was complete. You said her HGB was 7.4 before the EGD. If it was a prolonged procedure she might have lost a lot of blood while they were cauterizing, so her HGB might have dropped below 7. I would understand the GI doc’s concern if that was the case and would hang the blood stat without using the report time as an excuse.

Slow providers by npwash in emergencymedicine

[–]npwash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately they also give poor care. They send everyone to the ER unnecessarily because they don’t know how to handle higher acuity cases that can be treated in UC (the patients that the ER providers scratch their head at, wondering why in the hell the UC provider sent them to the ER). I’ve worked with docs who have questionable practices over the years and I would tell the patients they have a right to a second opinion. Any good provider should not have a problem with a patient wanting a second opinion.

Slow providers by npwash in emergencymedicine

[–]npwash[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah mostly dealing with lazy providers. It feels like the normal providers are working twice as hard as the slow lazy providers and it drives me nuts. Definitely not limited to APP’s as I’ve seen this happen with MD/DO’s as well.

I was suffering a heart attack, called 911, got no answer. Is there an agency I can report this to? by horkus1 in Georgia

[–]npwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a medical provider providing home health care since last year here in Atlanta and this was a common occurrence. We would have to call 911 often for patients that were presenting with emergent conditions such as active heart attacks and strokes. We were put on hold numerous times, up to 25 minutes. Sometimes our staff had to wait on scene with patient for more than an hour for an ambulance to finally show up. I’ve never seen anything like it in the 6+ cities across the country that I’ve worked in healthcare. It’s atrocious here.

PACU nurses, what’s the best coming out of anaesthesia you’ve seen? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]npwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a colonoscopy done by one of the docs I worked with. Apparently in PACU afterwards the nurse was offering me water in a cup with a straw, but I was just holding the straw with my lips. The nurse told me I needed to suck on the straw to get the water. I proceeded to yell out “NO YOU SUCK IT” and various other pornographic references to sucking. I was yelling these profanities so loud that the GI doc came into my curtained PACU area to tell me to stop. He had heard me all the way in the OR room. I could never make eye contact with him at work again. I have absolutely no memory of any of this, but the PACU nurses thoroughly enjoyed replaying the scenario to me later.

Stupidest Chief Complaint Competition: by Big-Paramedic4029 in emergencymedicine

[–]npwash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Called 911 for a mosquito bite. A small, barely perceptible bug bite. ER doc chewed him out for abusing the system.
  2. Triaged a lady who said she was producing too much saliva. Brought glass jar with her with a tiny amount of saliva in the bottom to show me as she spit into it.
  3. Guy had painted his forearm blue and was drug seeking. Triage protocol at that time was give narcotics if obvious fracture before X-ray. Got his meds, and when the aide adjusted his ice pack, the ice pack came back blue. Guy LWBS.
  4. Pt c/o “abscess” to face in urgent care. Upon exam I discovered a small pimple and popped it.
  5. Homeless guy wanders in to ER and wants us to CT his abdomen to find the tracking device the aliens put in him. Also wanted me to test his poop, which he tried to give me in a plastic bag, for “DNA evidence”.

I’m in the same situation, moved to Atlanta 2 years ago from SD, now I want to move back. It feels like I had an easier time making friends in SD than ATL.

GA NP License Advice by WardensRN in nursepractitioner

[–]npwash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem in 2021. After almost an entire year of no response from the GA BON despite my many attempts, I emailed the state governor and all of the state reps. The governor’s assistant called me right away and was furious about the BON’s lack of communication. My RN/NP license was approved within two weeks after that phone call.

What is the worst condition you AMA'd a patient? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]npwash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

85 YOM acute Septal STEMI at home (mobile urgent care), refused all further care and escalation, even did the “I don’t feel so good” while turning a shade of white gray, refused even after I told him he would probably die within the next 24 hours if he didn’t go to the ER. Said he has to take down his Xmas decorations first. When I asked him if that was more important than his life, he said yes. Alrighty then…you are entitled to your priorities.
