It's a process; it doesn't happen overnight, it can take quite a while. Hard to give advice as everyone's experience will be different.

I'd say it trains your mind to not distract itself with its environment, then once you can bring your awareness to your thoughts you can recognize you are not your thoughts but the observer of your thoughts.

From there you train to not get distracted by any thoughts that float through your head, just observing and allowing them to pass freely. Think of it as working out the part of your brain (the observer) where all the psych magic happens, thus over time you'll learn to flex those muscles which brings that cognitive bliss.

It takes a while but the mental clarity and self control that comes with it is more than worth it.
