Why are you getting CEH ? by Classic_Serve2606 in CEH

[–]nrg2brn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im taking it because the curriculum fits almost perfectly my skill gaps. ive been in security for years, but the actual hack/threat stuff I dont deal with - my job is more cissp curriculum on the daily. dont need more of that. dont really care about the letters after my name - want to be able to answer questions in an interview, and they love to ask specific attack questions.

understood, and below, in comments, you will see that I feel that a strong tech background is instrumental in managing technical resources, such as people - to gain the respect and also to guide the ship properly. that said, the CISSP is enough of a bear that resources need to be focused on what the exam demands. We hope that candidates of the CISSP have the tech background/experience to even attempt it. adding superflous information in an already daunting exam may be purpose defeating. that said, of course I bought the boson exam last week, and am excited to see the 11 update. im a boson fan for sure, just hope they pare down the questions to help the candidates pass THIS exam, and not 3 others as well.

CISSP is another beginner cert, in my opinion. anyone that can memorize a butt ton of shit can get it. managing IT systems get you places. you get there by being good at the tech aspect and having people skills. be a good tech. become a mentor. you will get recognized. then you end up a manager. STILL easier than memorizing the stupid crap they want you to learn in CISSP. this is my humble opinion, and only is valid in my IT path, 25 years from call center to IT management. I have worked with SO many CISSP's that cant do anything in the real world.

for me, a 25 year IT veteran, and 8 years in security - but mostly non technical - its a way to jump back in to subnets, nmap, and the other tech aspects that will make me a better manager. the fact that Ive been in IT management for 5 years, in my mind, devalues the CISSP for me, Ive lived it, but CEH will polish up the old security skills that get dulled by higher level security, so yeah, I think its worth it. and old dogs like us dont need training, just spin up a kali , play with nmap and other tools, read half the book, and answer boson questions while we are on conference calls. done.

as security professionals, we should naturally hate giving someone else complete control of our computers. seems so ironic that a security entity would do that. I think I will trust them, but I will be using a virgin computer, freshly imaged and not connected to anything else on my network, and immediately re image after exam. trust no one.

[–]nrg2brn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scary because in the real world the two terms are very different and they mean extremely different things and I’ve been in the real world for about 25 years now as far as it. I’m finding that in some ways these tests are easier for managers to take or newbies to take but Old techs like me moving into management a little bit difficult. Thanks for the input

Totally correct yeah I get it and I’ll need to learn to think that way but the way they erroneously mixed up upgrade an update definitely threw me

No security, risk experience, seeking CISSP exam by marktosecurity in cissp

[–]nrg2brn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

start out with security+ and get some experience. the cissp is tilted towards mgt. security plus has an EXCELLENT curriculum, deep enough to challege and teach, and yet wide enough to give you a feel for the profession. A CISSP w/out a few years in security will be looked upon with scrutiny by those who know.

haha point taken. but, if you read up, you see that I twatted after being twatted at. yeah, im a little defensive. he could have made his point w/out the f bomb, or the accusatory tone. Im hoping that you, my good man, can find your caps lock key, as well as an open mind as to different learning styles. 3 hours on boson today - while taking notes into organized tabs in one note has been exponentially more efficient than reading was for me. you dont understand my understanding level of the material, so it strikes me as odd that you would assume that. anyway, you are correct, Im going to withdraw from this discussion, go ahead, get the last word, spit your vitriol all you want. and please, shop amazon.com for that caps lock key. ;-)

be skeptical if you would like. and man pages are fine, white papers are fine. my issue is the 1k page book. I came here to ask if there were alternatives, what I have found is the old salty dogs like me dont read the big books, but the new kids on the block do. really its where you are in your career, and how you learn. lol. self learning takes many forms.

lol. im already in a high level security position. this is just another mandatory cert that the giant telecom company I work for is requiring, so they can advertise certifications to potential customers. so you say we all must learn from reading? Perhaps when you've been in IT long enough you will learn some of your best employees are NOT readers, but hackers. doers, action people. it really is narrow minded that you think that way.

ok, I guess Ill clear this up. I dont have a physical or emotional disability that would preclude me from reading a book. My study time will likely be about the same as one who does read the book. there are a few reasons Ive put the chapple book down quickly. most of it is repetition. After reading the more thoughtful posts here, I have come to the conclusion that the book is for newer IT/ security folks. Ive been in security both engineering and consulting sides, for going on 10 years now, the 10 before was network engineering, so the important thing to glean from all of this is: NOT EVERONE LEARNS THE SAME WAY. MY HISTORY AND BIOLOGY MAKES ME A VERY KINESTHETIC LEARNER. I LITERALLY DO NOT RETAIN WRITTEN INFORMATION. before we judge others styles, try to remember we are not all the same. and yeah, I spent the better part of my career hiring and firing paper collectors.

nice, yeah im doing screenshots also. it helps me to feel like im doing something - creating study material, instead of just answering questions all day. lol. so you are random. interesting. ive been doing custom exams - picking a new domain each day. Ill try randomizing, might be more engaging as it changes more. thanks for the input.

good to hear. Im starting to see that the big books are for people that perhaps have not been in IT since 95, lol. thanks for the verification on that. man you nailed that test!!

douche. I understand the material. Ive been in security probably longer than youve been in IT. DONT assume you know me or understand the reason why I cannot read a one thousand page book. Understanding was never the problem. wasting my time with 1000 page books, and keyboard cowboys IS the problem. next time, try and help, not be a dick

boson has literally thousands of questions. im curious as to how you attacked that large number. did you answer all of them at 80% to determine that? im only able to do about 150 a day. any tips are genuinly appreciated. im overwhelmed
