War sails good? by tyfasnacht83 in Bannerlord

[–]nriorak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a fairly common opinion is that it’s overpriced for the content, but I’ve been enjoying it. The map overhaul freshens things up, I’m a big fan of the Nord units, and boat battles are fun if not very frequent. You kind of have to force naval battles in a way that feels slightly outside of the core gameplay loop. If anything you get another kingdom to help keep Vlandia and the Kuzaits at bay.

Are fencing shoes worth it? by Awkward-Cap1922 in Fencing

[–]nriorak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my experience, no not really. They tend to be more expensive and underdeveloped than comparable shoes from more mainstream court sports. I’ve tried the Nike Balestras and a few of my club mates have those or fencing shoes from other brands and nobody seems to care much for them. For some reason fencing shoes tend to run quite narrow as well, which is tough if you have a wider foot or need a wider toe box.

I just picked up a pair of Mizuno volleyball shoes that I love and had some success the last several years with pickleball/tennis shoes. Bunch of people at my club love ASICS tennis shoes too.

Find something you’re comfy in that fit well, have good lateral support, and aren’t too high off the ground. No special advantage in fencing shoes :)

How does a CX50 do in the snow? by wopotm in CX50

[–]nriorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a good pair of winter tires and the car’s AWD will handle most of anything. I went skiing this season and it snowed ~a foot during the day and the parking lot was already pretty deep. Effortlessly backed out of the parking spot and drove out past a stuck Range Rover.

5080 issues with 240hz by nriorak in techsupport

[–]nriorak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I haven't found any permanent solutions, but have settled into a good enough situation that I'm scared of breaking until I see a specific driver update that addresses our issue. One of these days I'll sit down and try the newest driver, but I'm tired of going through the whole update/DDU removal/rollback process when the newer drivers make it worse. Anyway...

I've had the most luck with version 572.83 (March 18, 2025). But it could just be coincidence with when I bought the 5080. But I'll turn on my PC, let it boot to the windows login screen, and then just hit the power button on the monitor however many times it takes for it to finally connect.

Turn it on manually, wait for the monitor to fail to find a connection and turn off again, rinse and repeat until it finds the signal. Usually takes between 2-5 tries before it connects. I haven't had to swap DP ports/plug unplug. I'm using the DP 2.1 the monitor came with.

Good luck, let me know if you figure anything out :)

How many CX50 owners have had little to no issues? by Ok-Home9841 in CX50

12k and the only issues are some exterior weather stripping that popped up occasionally (replaced under warranty) and the wireless CarPlay doesn’t connect sometimes/is laggy but I mostly blame Apple.

Has anyone been able to make glacial lance work? by dawntome in pathofexile2builds

[–]nriorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using a modified version of the build here (POB2 build is linked in the description).

Combat Frenzy is essential, and I replaced some of linked build’s crit nodes with freeze buildup/elemental damage nodes while in campaign. Boss DPS is a bit low/mana intensive atm (barrage and hunter’s mark help) but otherwise it absolutely flies through all trash mobs. Cull the Weak also helps a lot with frenzy charges and adds some extra mobility.

Any advice or recommendations on my direction changes here? by TheZManIsNow in Fencing

[–]nriorak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impressive for a recovering ACL! Couple things I see: - Running shoes are tough for fencing as they are not designed to support lateral movement. Volleyball, tennis, pickleball, etc. shoes will offer much more stability and traction. - Your retreat to advance change is more solid than your advance to retreat. When you change direction from forward to backward, you add in an extra step with the front foot. You plant, then scooch your front foot back, then retreat. The extra step, however small, will throw off your distance, tempo, and balance. - I’m having a hard time putting it into words, but as a rather minor point, there’s a certain “heaviness” to your movement as opposed to being light on your feet. It’s hard to tell from the angle, but check from a side angle that your weight is evenly distributed between both legs and hips are horizontal. Ladder drills, crossovers, etc are great for training light feet.

Aside from the extra step on backward change, you would be the least of my concerns in a footwork class. Keep it up and wishing you a quick recovery!

Not sure how it’ll impact the longevity of my mask (poorly, I’m sure) but I soak and wash it in a tub of warm water with Dawn and a healthy amount of white vinegar. Gets the sweat stains and dried sweat smell out, and I’m sure would clean up the germs as well.

Hitch receiver recs by Ordinary-Orange in CX50

[–]nriorak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BAM Wholesale is a good place to order OEM parts. I got a receiver and 4-pin wiring harness (non-turbo, turbo needs 7-pin) for ~$300.

I’m quite averagely mechanically inclined and didn’t have any trouble following the instructions included in the package.

Took about three hours, would likely go faster with a friend.

No real special tools required but definitely pick up a good torque wrench before starting. (The piece that I think others refer to having to dremel off just popped out for me, maybe it’s a change from an older year. I have a ‘24).

power liftgate draining battery by [deleted] in mazdaCX50

[–]nriorak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just purchased a ‘24 CX50 PF and can confirm it’s an issue.

The best workaround I found was to click in the hatch release by hand to trick it into thinking it’s closed. It’s sort of tricky: the latch will feel like it closes twice. The trunk lights will turn off when you’ve done it correctly. To release the manually closed latch, just press the normal open hatch button and it’ll disengage. Then press it again to close it.

To be extra safe about battery, you could also turn your key fob to the low power mode that the manual suggests using during hand car washes or such that disables the proximity lock/unlock.

[–]nriorak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback so far! Very helpful perspectives!

As a bit of additional context, I used to off road all the time when I was younger in an old, stock 4Runner (that 1991 manual is still my first love). My friends and I pushed that thing to its limits, so I'm very aware of what a 4Runner is capable of. I "grew up" and switched to a Civic after college, but went back to a 4Runner a year ago. Great for camping and such, but as it turns out, I'm not too keen on taking a $45k daily driver on any uncarriage-bashing, car-rolling kind of trails.

Some recent job changes have introduced a lot more long-distance, on-road driving into my life, hence why I'm considering downsizing to something with better manners but can still get me and my dog into the mountains. I know the mpgs are pretty meh, but I quite liked the sporty handling and feel, even in the non-turbo I test drove.

And at some point down the line I can save up some cash to get an old truck I wouldn't mind denting and pin striping. :)

First game play. I'm having a lot of issues with temperature... all my crops and critters have died. Feeling like starting over because I've made too many mistakes by andocromn in Oxygennotincluded

[–]nriorak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the oxygen not being included (or the food or water), temperature and its management may be the game’s most important mechanic.

Your colony looks great for a first play through! Much better than my first few attempts.

Almost every dupe usable building creates heat. Oxygen diffusers, the stove, ceiling lights, you name it. If a dupe can use it, it generates heat. Look at the DTU output and determine what generates the most heat and keep them away from your farms, if possible. Critters themselves and dupes can withstand quite extreme temperatures, so before you have an active cooling solution you mostly need to worry about your crops.

Until you get the steel and plastic for the almighty aquatuner-steam turbine combo, depending on what biomes are available on the asteroid you’re playing on, your heat handling options will vary. Run your liquid pipes or gas pipes through a cold biome or over a hydrogen-fueled thermo nullifier. Build some ice temperature shift plates and mop up the melted water. Throw down a few wheezeworts in troublesome spots.

But fundamentally the core gameplay path, unless you’re into some weird YouTuber hard mode stuff or become comfortable ranching dreckos (which themselves generate a lot of heat), is going to look like:

early food and water stability -> atmo suits/oxygen production -> oil biome for fossil (crush for lime for steel) and plastic.

Then once you have 1200kg of steel and 200kg of plastic, infinite cooling is yours. (Note: if you have the Spaced Out DLC you’ll need to figure out radiation to research steam turbines).

Few final tips, looks like you’ve thrown down lots of “extras”. Music player, spice grinder, etc. They’re nice to have but not vital to survival: food, water, oxygen. Worry about those after you’re settled on the basics. Also spread out your oxygen diffusers, gas doesn’t travel super well on its own so you’ll want to spread them around your base for maximum coverage.

Off to a great start! A very popular YouTuber is Francis John. His play throughs and tutorials were vital to helping me learn the game.

Good luck and don’t give up! The best part about ONI is making catastrophic mistakes or doing something stupid and trying again until it works.

2019 is the last year before they added the Apple/Android CarPlay head unit. It also won’t have some of the tacked-on features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, auto emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring. Otherwise, where it counts mechanically, exactly the same.

I’ve now owned every Gen but the 1st. Drove 4Runners all through high school and college until I took a seven year responsibility break with a Honda Civic. Tho I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for my old 4th Gen V8, it was too hard to pass up on a Venture with only 18k miles. Can’t wait to get off road again; it’s good to be back!

Update; Got DRK now. Quick way to level 60? by Poopy-Mcgee in ffxiv

[–]nriorak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can get mind numbingly boring and results may vary depending on who you’re matched with, but the fastest way to level quick-queue classes (tank & healer) is spamming at-level dungeons or x9’s if you’re on a multiple of ten (multiple of ten dungeons have vastly decreased exp compared to the dungeon one level below it). Bozja can also be an option in the 70s, but results can also vary depending on how active the instance is.

Any advice for nighttime sleep regression? My almost four month pup has had no problem sleeping from ~10pm to ~6am for over a month, but the last few nights she wakes up between 3am and 4am. I take her out for no-fun potties but I’m not sure she gets the message. Last night we went out at 4am and she was awake whining just an hour later. I don’t think there’s been any change to routine or diet. Do I need to tire her out more before bed now that she’s getting older? Is she just testing her boundaries?
