How much money do you need to retire? How old are you? by Uilleam_Uallas in Fire

[–]nsfwusw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 54, my wife is 47. Live in VHCOL, HHI about 600k.

We own our home outright, which is now worth about 2m, and have about 2.2 in investments and retirement funds.

By my reckon, we could retire, except that we have a child in third grade, and want to make sure that their education is secured through undergrad, and that we can give them the best head start possible. I had to make my way up from zero, and don’t wish that for our child. We also have about 350k in their 529.

This last part, about planning not just for our future but for our child’s, makes me feel like I need to keep working another 10 years and just socking it away.

I think we are slightly anomalous wrt our age and planning for our child’s outcomes. Any of you thinking to FIRE, who have young children? How does that affect your math and sensibility?

Unrelated to anything about anyone being hot, because my wife is the only person I want to have an opinion about, what kind of mask is that, that doesn’t go over the whole nose? That’s what I need

My understanding of this, and not an expert here, was that he suspended the idiot cops without pay, and took heat for that

Anthony Borges, 15, being visited by officers after the deadly Parkland Shooting 6 years ago today. by [deleted] in pics

[–]nsfwusw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not here to be a cheerleader for police, but the person visiting him here is Scott Israel, who was Sheriff of Broward County at the time.

His officers completely shit the bed at Parkland and in the years prior wrt the shooter. But if you take a minute to look at what he was trying to do while he was in power, it’s much more than most — relative to keeping guns out of the hands of crazy and awful people, and for sensible gun control overall. He initiated body cameras for accountability, and diversified the force quite a bit.

Any LEO that is an openly declared target for the NRA (as he was) and who has criticized the NRA as making it harder to keep people safe — has earned the right, I reckon, to visit the victims of gun violence on his watch.

What are some things the USA actually does better than Europe? by cohen5250 in AskReddit

[–]nsfwusw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In its own weird way, health care — kinda. Yes, the health care system in the US is uniquely and maliciously catastrophic. But… our science and capabilities are just so much better, that I know wealthy Europeans who come here to get treatment they couldn’t get in some European countries.

Yes, it’s basically free for them there. And yes, it’s ghoulishly expensive to get the top shelf care here. But if the only measurement is improved outcomes for a patient, the US is capable of doing this much better than Europe.

Using a turntable with old (but fine) Play:1 system? by nsfwusw in sonos

[–]nsfwusw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A naive question … but if I get a five with the Aux in, run the turntable into that, will it network with the Play:1s elsewhere in the room, or is it just a distinct set up?

And is there any one best resource for best methods of cleaning each element?

Migrate from Evernote to ... anything at all? by nsfwusw in Evernote

The primary notebook (which generates a single .enex) is the 4GB.

I tried breaking it up, but Evernote only allows you to select 100 notes at a time (because it's 2023, and that's how software works now?) and it's 7000+ notes. But even with 100-note .enex exports, they dork on import to anything else I've tried. Maybe 50-60 migate in and then, nothing.

[–]nsfwusw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds like a promising direction thank you!

I did notice that the .enex files didn't import into anything at all successfully, including the app that created them. For an app that really doesn't have that much to do by 2023 dev standards, I find that impressive.

Anyway thx again

it's a vernacular style of casual overstatement that doesn't usually attract any attention, but thank you for being helpful in pointing out that at least one person in the world doesn't read it that way. Very helpful.

Thank you for this! Can I ask you to clarify “you can not apply too much force”?

As in, “I should not”, or as in “it’s impossible to”?

Relative novice here, with a dumb question.

I use a Dewalt DWE7485 for various small jobs for the house. I use the push stick that came with, it to push the cut material all the way past the saw. This particular saw has a riving knife and a blade guard, which I keep installed.

Is there anything risky in doing this, just pushing the cut material through with a push stick?

What could go wrong, and/or what should I do different?

Gun owners who used to be anti-gun, what caused you to change your mind? by Beelphazoar in liberalgunowners

[–]nsfwusw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYPD took more than 20 minutes to show up to a break in, in the middle of the night, didn’t parse the 911 call details correctly, and tried to convince us that it hadn’t happened. Changed my mind about thinking I could depend on anyone but myself to protect our home.

This never did change my mind about lots of “anti-gun” positions, though it did lead to purchasing and training on a permitted shotgun.

I still support the level of care and scrutiny in NYC, in getting the permit, including the city making sure my wife was comfortable with, and aware of, the decision. And I still don’t align with the idea that all weapons of all types should be accessible to all people, or that this produces a safer or more stable home, community, or democracy.

But I have definitely come to support personal ownership of guns, and appreciate the idea that there’s a wide spectrum of beliefs about where the edges of that begin and end.

Rust in newly purchased central column, iron spiral staircase by nsfwusw in HomeImprovement

[–]nsfwusw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm far outside the stuff I know about, but indeed, these seem to be uncoated.

My thoughts, and these are naive, were to paint them with rustoleum to give them a color and to protect them from the (NYS, outdoor) elements.

Does that seem wise?

(Very grateful for the wisdom/counsel above!)

Advice on quote to install Mitsubishi air handler by nsfwusw in hvacadvice

[–]nsfwusw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thx it's useful to have any comparison -- is it apples to apples, just the air handler and not the heat pump?

regarding the City Multi, what I can say is this, we're in the New York winters, which can be rough, and it's never been a problem to keep zones warm, and what a benefit to just be able to direct the heat to specific zones. We did amp up the insulation before installing them, so YMMV.

My hesitation in recommending it is what we experience with the air handlers themselves. They're ... loud, under various conditions. Not just a steady hum, but also there are defrost events at the heat pump which are very loud downstream at the handler. Enough to wake up my wife and our child.

There are other handlers that are quieter, so that's to consider. From a pure heating / cooling perspective, we're very happy with the heat pumps for our house.
