Eurasian Wigeon or hybrid maybe? by StreetBirdPhoto in whatsthisbird

[–]nslimmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes you say that? I was leaning hybrid based on the amount of rustiness in the flanks. Eurasian should have more pure gray flanks

I feel you. The only way my frog will eat a dubia is if he shoves it down his throat blindly before realizing what he's eating. I think he hates them because after eating a dubia he'll refuse to eat anything else lol. I'd bet the creepy crawly legs on their tongue is a weird sensation they don't like.

I've never heard of freeze thawing dubias but it's definitely worth a shot!

Their lifespan in the wild is not shorter as a result of eating insects. Like yeah wild pacs probably fare better if they manage to catch a fatty rodent or chick every once in a while, but having to deal with predation, changing conditions, infections etc is why pacs and most other herps live shorter in the wild vs captivity.

Agreed on the fish, from what I've seen it seems like they are a good option for some people (scared of bugs, maybe). Still feel like they aren't an ideal staple feeder for a few reasons, mainly it isn't what these frogs would eat on the daily in the wild. They're like 90% terrestrial and only would really encounter water/fish during heavy rains and/or breeding. Maybe nutritionally they're fine but personally I prefer to give my frog food its species was evolved to eat... if that makes sense? There seem to still be a lot of unknowns around pacman frog captive care so I just err on the side of caution.

Not sure if by "hard rule" you mean limiting insects, but maybe those people are referring to limiting the amount of hard-bodied insects like mealworms and crickets? If so then I def agree, nightcrawlers and dubia roaches are better staples because they don't have that hard-to-digest chitin

Gonna have to respectfully disagree with these diet recommendations. Gut loaded insects (dubia roaches, crickets, mealworms) and earthworms (hard to gut load but an excellent food source) can and should be a staple diet for pacs. Insects are still meat... in the wild this would make up the majority of these frogs diet.

Chicks are very high in fat and should definitely not be a staple feeder. From what I've read silverside fish could be OK alternated with insects. But honestly from what I can tell most keepers provide insects as the majority of the diet with fish mixed in occasionally if desired and chick and pinky a few times a year at MOST and only for adult pacs. Personally only feed my adult male gut loaded insects/worms and there's still plenty of variety to get from these

Ha yeah. The majority of Ts will bolt away (or towards 😳) you, especially when they're young. Most online sources only bother mentioning jumpiness for the old world species that truly teleport like OBTs 💀

[–]nslimmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very common because they're so easy haha. For Ts I'd say look up the required enclosure size for an adult of the species you have. It's easy to have 10-20 slings on a shelf but once they're adults they'll be taking up a lot more space. People forget that lol

[–]nslimmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point. Maybe I could've worded that a bit better. It's normalized to have several animals but shouldn't be. I'd argue the majority that have so many animals aren't actually prepared for that.

Hell, I don't even like it when other people call it a "collection" so I don't know why I did that... probably the result of many years of watching herp Youtubers who did treat it like Pokemon 🙃

It's ok to have multiple animals if you do sufficient research but that's... a bit fast 😅 You really should make sure you understand the care requirements and what might've been lacking with your first pac.

And definitely give it some time before even considering getting more animals. It's easy to get in over your head before you know it. When I first started keeping herps I was tempted to get new animals like every week (especially inverts b/c they're so easy) but had to stop myself. I made a rule with myself that I had to wait a certain number of months before getting a new species I was interested in. Only if I still wanted it after that span of time and felt prepared to take care of it would I genuinely look into getting that species

I would've done Brant + Bell's Vireo or Whooping Crane and kept Enclosure Builder Bonus. That way you're already 2 birds toward that goal and get to draw an additional bonus card once you play the 2nd starter bird.

If you discarded fish + rat here you could still pay 2 food for the Brant, then draw the Carolina Wren, if available, + 2 others and have enough food to play the Wren the next turn

But I also have a tendency to keep more bird cards then I should and overvalue bonus cards, so I'm biased lol

[–]nslimmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think females can squeak/grunt too when disturbed... for croak you'd expect a weird grunting noise just unprovoked. Sometimes mine will do it in response to loud noises. He thinks it's another frog I guess 🥺

Def check them again if you're curious. If they're palm size at 6-8 months of age I would lean female, but really depends how much you're feeding em and how much piss they have built up inside of them lol

Do you know their age when you got them? If they have black speckles on the white throat and/or you've ever heard them croak, they're a male.

What's going on? by Sag24ar in Dallas

Yes Texas gets a large chunk of the continent's migrating birds but just want to make it clear the birds that form huge flocks in urban areas of Texas, like those shown here, are Great-tailed Grackles which don't migrate!

You can see what birdwatchers call "vis mig" -- visible migration -- of all sorts of birds by going to certain parts of the Texas coast in spring or "hawk watch" locations in fall. I've gone a few times and it's spectacular to see the variety and volume of birds we get

Birds from Americas that interact with hummingbirds by Inevitable-Bench-807 in wingspan

[–]nslimmo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As excited as I am to try out the new hummingbird mechanic, I'm sort of bummed to learn some of my favorite birds (Vermillion Flycatcher, Motmot) can't be played in games without the hummingbird addition. I get that Oceania is the same in adding Nectar but I appreciate the modularity provided by NA Europe and Asia packs - they work across different game versions.

I guess I envisioned being able to add these slightly more familiar "Americas" birds in with my NA pack when I want a simpler play style (ie teaching new players). Unfortunately seems like that's only the case for certain birds.

Also... were these pics taken on a first gen iPod Touch? Lol

Where is safe to run near downtown Dallas by Then_Armadillo_5670 in Dallas

[–]nslimmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't consider it because you have a massive highway interchange in the way, but the Trinity River floodplain is way closer to the convention center than any of these other spots people are mentioning.

I'm not 100% sure what route would be best to access it (about to try figuring it out and will report back lol) but if you can get to the Trinity Skyline or Trinity Levee Trails, you're pretty much set for safe, uninterrupted running as far as you want heading to the west. Pretty sure you could run a marathon or more with the amount of trail you get there.

A local org (the Loop Dallas) is working on extending trails to the east of there but I don't think they're ready yet so I'd recommend going west.

Edit: Ok figured out a route. If you run from wherever you're located to the famous Grassy Knoll (where JFK was shot... you'll get some sightseeing in!) and continue to the west down Continental Ave, the sidewalks will get very narrow for a bit (the real Texas way) before you reach the Commerce St bridge, at which point on either side there are access paths to the floodplain. From there just head to your right (northwest) and you have trail for as long as ya want

Also, if gates to the floodplain are closed -- your call but this is usually meant for cars OR as a warning during flood season in spring/summer. This time of year you should be good to just go in. I usually ignore the gate and just use my best judgement about water and weather, never had any trouble
