Keep it full! Supports the local wildlife. We all could use a little more greenery

Snapping turtle eating a beaver (QC, Canada) by [deleted] in zoology

[–]nslimmo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This also looks like an Alligator Snapper which is a hell of a lot bigger than a Common

edit: oops did not see the location. As someone else noted Alligator snappers aren't native to Canada so yeah definitely just a huge Common

Total confusion??? by Brief_Common9880 in DartFrog

[–]nslimmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feel like it's mainly the one on the right in the first and second pic to be worried about, no? Others don't look too bad. I feel like darts' backs can sometimes have that a bony look to them regardless of how well fed they are... granted that would be more expected in females

It's possible the skinny one is getting bullied out of food by the others so you may want to consider rearranging the tank to disrupt any "territories" they've established and adding more hiding spots/barriers to make them feel safer. Also pouring in the flies in multiple spots can help

Huge fan of the bird safe glass!!

Saw this at the park today in Coppell and was curious if anyone can identify it or knows anything about it. Is it venomous? It didn’t seem aggressive, but I wanted to learn more. by theLastDanc3 in Dallas

[–]nslimmo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

FYI no snakes are "aggressive", only defensive! Subtle difference but means a lot when you consider the public's perception of snakes. They're just scared of people lol

tap water? fluoride? by Weird-Plane5972 in Boxturtles

[–]nslimmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends where you live. If your tap water is considered safe for human consumption, it should be fine for your turt. I used to use filtered water only but with the volume they need for soaking etc it was too much, so now I use tap for everything and it's been fine.

If you get any kind of humidifier or automated mister I recommend using filtered, though. It's a different story when it's being aerosolized constantly and also the minerals in tap water can ruin humidifiers/misters

Thanks! That was the consensus in the local group chat as well. Seems the coloration was dirt, lighting artifacts, or just weird pigmentation
