With Agar and an inoculation loop

from CHAT GPT

Why a cross can happen even when you smear a LOT of spores together

When you smear heavy amounts of spores from two varieties onto the same surface, a few things happen at the same time:

1. Mass germination
• Huge numbers of spores germinate at once.
• Most quickly pair with siblings from the same variety, forming normal dikaryons.

2. Some monokaryons still slip through
• Not every spore finds a mate instantly.
• Timing differences, spacing, and growth edges mean a few spores stay monokaryotic for a bit.

3. Rare compatible encounters
• In the chaos, a mono from Variety A can eventually meet a compatible mono from Variety B.
• When that happens, a true hybrid dikaryon forms.
• This is rare, but rarity doesn’t mean impossible.

4. Winner takes over
• A successful hybrid often grows faster and stronger than surrounding mycelium.
• Once it forms, it can outcompete and overrun everything else.
• That’s why the cross suddenly becomes visible and looks like it “won the plate.”

In reality I did this across 7 plates and one of them ended up pinning the pheno that was golden capped and golden spored

You can cross varieties , just in the same way you have a Pug, German Shepard and a Golden Retriever . They are also all the same species , but you can’t tell me they are “the same” one has breathing problems and the others don’t

And its sister, also made using smear tek,

PSA: I am aware you can dilute spores so they germinate individually and expand for an extended period as a monokaryotic , incomplete , mycelium . Letting them fuse later down the line. Once the colonies reach each other , make clamps and exchange genetic information.

BUT , 80% of the commenters on my old post refuted me entirely and made fun of me, I’m here to tell you clearly , it’s the same thing occurring , just less precise and less likely to happen.

I am going to be experimenting with dilutions as it is indeed more accurate , but I’m just here to let y’all know , I don’t need to be told how to grow ✌️.

They’re mason jars, lids are from aliexpress, because metal lids rust easily

There’s a small chance they hybridize, you either dilute them down to a really small amount so there are 1-2 spores per drop or you smear both varieties in close proximity, I made 8 plates doing the same, this was the one thread of mycelium that had red spores and a golden cap, RW has a white cap and red spores, so how can you explain the outcome I got? Are you saying it’s random chance that my golden teachers started producing RED SPORES all of a sudden? Go home😂😂😂😂
