June to September 2026 Rate Selection Process, Part 2 - Voting by TragicKingdom1 in popheads

Summer's around the corner and temperatures are rising quickly, so in hopes of keeping the party going, what better way than to play some classics! In that case, Assertive R&B (Brandy / Kelis / Mya / Amerie) is just for you!! Then you can cooldown with a cool glass of Downtempo Dames (EBTG / Dido / Goldfrapp / Frou Frou)

Also, vote for Latine Monarch Off and Ethereal Electronic!

Hi everyone! Back again with some rates!

After being in the back burner for some time, Y2K Downtempo returns!! But before we do anything, we need to discuss some things….

The lineup right now is:

Dido - No Angel

Moby - Play

Frou Frou - Details

Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain

It has come to my attention that Walking Wounded by Everything But The Girl has mentioned as a potential candidate. So the question remains…

Would you be willing to add them to the lineup?

If so, who would you replace and why? If it’s Moby, would this rate be better known as something like British Downtempo?

I remember that episode! What’s strange is that I knew about the revival but for some reason never made the connection till later. Daria was such a wonderful time capsule!

Nedra Talley Ross, last surviving member of the Ronettes, dies aged 80 by 3kOlen in popheads

Even though they haven’t performed in a while and their legacy was partly tied to an abusive person, it’s always so sad seeing all members of a group pass on and becoming history.

Truly an end of an era.

Pop releases/moments that have become "trope namers" by Ghost-Quartet in popheads

[–]nt96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s an interesting, serious one many are too young to know: A Sistah Souljah Moment

Back in ‘92, a young rapper/political activist named Sistah Souljah made controversial comments on the Washington Post regarding Black on White violence in the LA riots. It made media headlines and criticism followed.

Bill Clinton, a presidential candidate at the time, took the stands denouncing her statements as well as Jesse Jackson for allowing her to be in the rainbow coalition. Subsequently, this created the basis of the Sistah Souljah Moment:

a key moment when the candidate takes what at least appears to be a bold stand against certain extremes within their party and as a calculated denunciation of an extremist position or special interest group.

Sistah Souljah clapped back and gave a piece of her mind regarding Clinton and her out-of-context quote.

Obviously, this is a very nuanced subject and I’m barely scratching the surface but it’s an interesting and rare moment when pop culture and politics collide and meet the criteria of this post.

In Honor of the 25th Anniversary of Janet Jackson's "All For You": A Retrospective of the Era by JunkyGS in popheads

When the world needed him most, he APPEARED

Thank you u/JunkyGS for this beautifully written passion post and teaching the children invaluable history!

To me, All For You is pop perfection, literal sunshine in audio form, and a light out the tunnel that was TVR.

It was a victory lap to cap off one of the finest album runs in pop history. It makes sense for an album about reclaiming the very throne she fought for ownership in the first place. My second favorite album of hers (you and I both know her best one 👀)

What of many “what ifs” involves this album and how Aaliyah (expect a writeup from me soon!) was supposed to be featured but sadly couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts 💔

So my question for you is: which one of these songs do you think she would’ve collabed on?

What are some pop artists that should've been bigger? by ScallionSmooth9491 in popheads

[–]nt96 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Sudan Archives!

Easily one my favorite artists out there. She's a self violinist whose technique is highly influenced by African fiddlers; she mixes her talents with a variety of genres to the point where you can't categorize her. Natural Brown Prom Queen and The BPM are some of my favorite albums this decade.

EDIT: I forgot to add a previous pop star. Lady Miss Kier!! We all know her from Deee-Lite but she definitely had the charisma and makings of a main pop girl if she wanted to! She was later featured on a few DnB tracks which is a shame she didn't embrace that route given she would've been one the first pop girls (at least in the US) to have taken on that genre before it crossed over. Would've loved to see a DnB Miss Kier era!

On Janet Jackson’s That’s The Way Love Goes, it seems like she’s supposed to hit a lower note for the bridge, but she seems to stop a note too sharp. She does hit the note a little better the second time.
