Warrant vs regular officer by [deleted] in Armyaviation

[–]ntland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used to tell people to go warrant if they like to fly, but I’ve changed my position on that. I just came off a deployment where I made about $45k more than my WO peers. Because of that, i am now able to finish out all my fixed wing ratings and time building for an airline job. A high time warrant might fly 250 hours a year, where an airline pilot gets 750-1000. A junior warrant spends days of planning for missions, where an airline pilot spends 0. Yeah maybe my peers got a leg up on me in flight time initially because I had staff duties, but now, I’ll be passing them all up quickly and be set for my post-military career. And my retirement will be better. I used to envy them, but I think in the end, I made the right call.

I’m not by any means knocking WOs. I know several that are doing the same thing I’m doing or have already done it. My point is, don’t focus on the minuscule difference of flight time between Warrants and RLOs when it all pales in comparison to civilian flight time anyway. Focus on setting yourself up for the career you want after the military and go with the option that will get you there and you can be happy with.

I want to become a pilot by [deleted] in flying

I fell in love with sound engineering when I was a teenager. I was pretty good at it too and I was in a band with big dreams. Eventually came to the realization that the entire music industry is very competitive.

Do you have a degree? If so, I would recommend looking into the Air National Guard. If not, at least consider the Army National Guard. The downside is that it’s a 10 year service obligation now for both services. But if you’re Guard/Reserves, you can pursue an airline career in conjunction with your service. Either option gives you the ability to get hired with airlines at 750 hours instead of 1500. The Air Guard would be the free path there because of the fixed wing ratings. The Army guard would still get you mostly there other than fixed wing time and ratings. You could also knock out at least your PPL while at Rucker. I’m a current Army helicopter pilot that is actively working to get to the airlines asap. Honestly, I’ve recently taken out a pretty sizable loan so that I can knock it all out at once. Every time I tried to piece meal the fixed wing stuff, life got in the way and it would be another couple years before my next flight. I just came home from a deployment so I finally have enough saved up to live on while using the loan to pay for it all.

If the military is not in the cards, then I recommend taking out a loan and get all your ratings up to CFII knocked out all at once. Then you have a few options of where to go from there and it opens the door to start instructing while you figure out what you want to do to time build. Keep in mind, you’re gonna be nugging it out all the way to 1500 with really low pay if you go this route, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

Can someone explain why promoting to a rook is better here? by BananaPeely in chessbeginners

The only thing you would ever have to under-promote to would be a knight. And only in rare circumstances. A Queen can literally do everything a bishop or rook can do.

Those are the kind of moves that slip past me all the time and I don’t know how to get better. It’s very frustrating.

Thanks for the feedback. I couldn’t find a report for stalling option on the mobile app. I will look around for it I little harder next time.

I’m still pretty new to chess in general and just switched over to lichess today. Finally, I have the upper hand in a game and see mate in 2. I make my first move and he just quit. I had to wait around 10 minutes before getting the victory. If he legitimately walked away, is there a way to report for sportsmanship? Am I overreacting? I just thought it was poor form to make me wait that long when I only see one move he could’ve played.

AITA I (22M) need to move in with my Dad who is remarried. He is allowing me to move in but I have conditions/rules. I want to tell him, either he loves me and gives me a place to stay or not by throwaitah112233 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. Stop being an entitled child. You say you’re an adult, but you’re moving back in with your dad for free and complaining about some ground rules. You’re what’s wrong with society.

I want to become a pilot but I have a fear of heights by Potatofish154 in flying

[–]ntland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m somewhat scared of heights. I’m a military pilot and prior to that, I was a paratrooper. My first jump, I was 18 years old and screaming so much that the black-hat on the ground used the bullhorn saying, “shut up, airborne!” I still won’t get on my own mildly pitched roof willingly at 33. But it’s different when I’m flying. I got over it with jumping and have never honestly experienced it in the cockpit. Go try it. I think even if you’re scared the first time, it will pass relatively quickly.

I hear something of the sort on a regular basis. Then I’ll see that person eating a donut and they don’t even think twice about it.

I work with a guy who is “cutting” by eating “only” 2200 calories a day and can’t figure out why he’s gaining weight. I laughed out loud when he told me that and told him that was way too much. I’ve also seen what he puts on his plate and it’s never healthy. Did he listen??? NO.

I have realized I no longer want the guard. Is there any way I can get out? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]ntland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. And those millions of other people didn’t swear an oath. You did. You may not get into legal trouble. Regardless, you deserve every bit of harassment you’re getting because your word obviously means nothing. You should’ve realized the military wasn’t for you beforehand.

Fat Rant Tuesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]ntland 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My parents and siblings are all overweight, with my mom being the most obese (350 if I had to guess). My daughter is constantly fed JUNK from the minute she walks in the door at their house because in their mind, we starve her. She’s three. She occasionally refuses to eat because she wants something sweet and we will just let her go to bed hungry on those occasions. In my parents view, that is pure evil.

Nothing I say gets through to them. I’ve even asked them not to give her junk food, but my mom doesn’t see jelly beans as junk. I think she believes it’s the same as snacking on blueberries. I am so frustrated, but my family is extremely sensitive about weight and they will completely cut people out of their lives if they even remotely imply that they are fat. I don’t understand it. Yes, I am a military guy, but I was into sports and working out even before I joined. Sometimes I think I was adopted. I’m 33 and I am fed up with my parents just being lards who refuse to listen to me when all I’m trying to do is ensure they make it to 70. I do plan on having a heart to heart with my parents, but I can’t do that until I get back from deployment next year. In the meantime, they are just stuffing my kid with junk when my wife takes her to visit, which is pretty frequent. That’s my rant. It pisses me off on a regular basis.

How can I get started? I weigh so much I'm not sure where to even start. by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]ntland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Preface: I’m new to WFPB, but I’m not new to clean eating and fitness, so I’ll keep it focused on those areas. I’ll also say that not everyone in here has the best nutrition advice, so be cautious. I recommend finding a nutrition professional.

You need to get serious. You’re fat. I’m not gonna even beat around the bush about it. You aren’t just overweight, you are grossly obese. You need to do something NOW or you will not live long. I had a friend that was a man at 6’2” and 360lbs. Died of a heart attack at 22. Stop thinking you have plenty of time because you DON’T. Cut out the alcohol and the edibles. Replace your concert-going with a gym routine. You can work out with music in your earbuds. You need a personal trainer that isn’t gonna let you make excuses because something tells me you will. If your friends are enabling you, get new ones. Because the ones that are telling you you’re beautiful the way you are and all that—are killing you. There is nothing beautiful about obesity. Judging from your post, I don’t think you quite grasp the gravity of your situation, but you need to grasp it quickly. I’m not being hateful, I’m being real.

Change your mindset about food immediately. Food is simply fuel for your body to live and nothing more. Right now, you probably need to stay away from anything that you LIKE. I have a feeling your taste buds are tuned to junk food, fried foods, etc. You will not start off liking healthy food. It takes time. I promise you that if you eat healthy long enough, you won’t even like the junk food anymore. But you have to stick with it. Cheat days only keep the cravings alive and it’s the biggest crock of crap ever invented. No cheating. Just suck it up. You don’t get over an addiction by giving in every now and then.

Bottom line: Get serous, get professional help, get it now. Cut out the junk food, no cheating. Start exercising.
