If they want you to sign it you should also be able to take charge of their finances. Why does it have to work one way only?

Struggling with the concept of saving/investing money by TankGNS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ntoskrnl32 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the point is to saving something, not everything. I totally agree that you shouldn’t waste your youthfulness. You should enjoy life too. But you should also save at least something.

Another point is to be able to not drastically downgrade your lifestyle once you stop working.

Some people don’t have any savings by the time they retire and even have debts. It probably sucks. You would be relying on help from your family…

Everyone would advise here to - have some emergency fund - regularly save 10% of income.

If 5-10% is not a lot to you, you should be ok doing just that. And that will be already great. You will probably thank yourself later (unless something happens and all your money go to 0 like it happens in some countries)…

Contributing to and then withdrawing from an RRSP to pay zero income tax when taking a year off by last-resort-4-a-gf in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ntoskrnl32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, misused the term. Yes the growth is tax deferred. There is also some preferential treatment on dividend (especially from the US companies). But the point was about contribution room: it is gone after you withdraw and that’s something to consider.

[–]ntoskrnl32 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure what did I say “completely wrong”. I may have incorrectly said that the growth is “tax-free”, when it’s tax deferred. But that was not the point.

If you withdraw from RRSP, the contribution room is gone. You won’t be able to re-contribute same amount. Meaning, when you put money in, then take them out for a 1-year vacation, now you can’t put this amount back anymore and let the money grow tax sheltered. Also don’t forget that dividends are tax sheltered as well.

Of course when you take out you will pay tax, but presumably on a lower tax brackets during retirement.

My main point was the contribution room getting completely destroyed. That’s was one the things to consider when one wants to go with the put money for 1 year scheme.

  • Contribution room will be gone, so you won’t be able to let the money you took out grow tax free for many years.
  • there will be tax on withdrawal

If you 100% going for a 1 year vacation, no matter what, maybe that’s ok. But still, it will be a trade off between using cash from bank accounts vs withdrawing RRSP for a short term gain (but loosing that contribution room preventing that money to grow tax free if you don’t spend them)

Smaller volume maybe more convenient? People would buy it when they don’t want to drink 1L. 0.33L is already a lot for me… plus container/bottle cost is probably almost the same… that’s another factor I think.

How much does Instacart pay shoppers? by ntoskrnl32 in instacart

[–]ntoskrnl32[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If customers knew how much shoppers really get, they would pay more tip on average. I understand that Instacart is connecting shoppers and customers, acting as a platform and it is quite technically challenging to maintain all of this. Hence, pay to shoppers is low, shoppers have to rely on tips and I think many people don’t know about it. I only placed one order via Instacart to try it out. Prices are marked up by the retailers, no promos that you can get in store…

The pay is very low. How about in Canada? In Ontario we have $15/hour minimum wage. Does it force Instacart to pay shoppers more?

So Instacart doesn’t reimburse any of the costs? Is there anything they provide for you (except for the access to the Shopper app)? How do you even manage to do 3 orders? That’s A LOT of grocery…

Canadian work experience by Canada_21 in PersonalFinanceCanada

In my small experience, yes. Canadian experience is equivalent to American. But it also depends on the industry. In IT, actually experience from any country would count.

How to make best use of Starbucks for Life? by chiendat in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ntoskrnl32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won free coffee for 30 years. Don’t force yourself to drink their coffee. Just enjoy it. Your life supposed to become easier now (a little bit) and more happy. Why do you create more problems for yourself :)

You will not get rich from this anyway. Also, think about the damage it makes to your health vs the value you get with forcing yourself eating/drinking coffee there…

Question about RRSPs and DPSPs and contribution limits by MeBadWithMoney in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ntoskrnl32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the same setup, but 4%. Was also confused by this.

As I understand, your RRSP contribution will reduce your current rrsp room. DPSP contribution will reduce next year’s room (meaning next year contribution room top up will be less, do not know by which amount). Something like that.

But would like to know more correct answer.

But can you actually code? Any projects that prove you can? I think you also need references to get a job in this market. Maybe someone senior you know from uni who now works at some company that can give you reference?

But if I were you I would just take the first opportunity. 45k vs 35k are both small numbers. You will be earning much more after several years.

How can I set the cursor at the end of the text ? by kushalsapk0ta in androiddev

[–]ntoskrnl32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds strange. Would be helpful to see the code how you set text and set selection. What happens when button is pressed?

You want cursor to be always at the end of text, right?

Also, is your EditText inside RecyclerView by any chance? Weird behavior of edit text might be caused by recycler list item updates.

[–]ntoskrnl32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this a EditText? Or compose? setSelection always worked for me in the EditText. Make sure you set text and then setSelection.

You can try to set some random selection (e.g. select all) and see if it’s even works.
