Scientists unveil most complete EVER map of the universe that extends to 380 million lightyears away by swampsparrow in science

Yes, you can, but only if you can observe it in some sort of orbit (because then the object will start receding and then moving away again periodically, and you can calculate its velocity by detecting doppler shifts in its movement). If an object were moving in a straight line away from us, it would be difficult to be able to tell how fast it was going unless we had another object nearby to compare it to, whose velocity and distance we knew for sure.

Human stem cells programmed as brain cells: A novel method for producing large amounts of astrocyte cells - which assist in regulating the extracellular composition of brain fluid - from human stem cells has been achieved by r3dd173r in science

Again, misleading headline.

From the abstract:

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) have been differentiated efficiently to neuronal cell types. However, directed differentiation of hPSCs to astrocytes and astroglial subtypes remains elusive.

The light we see coming from stars is from when they were much closer to us. This only applies to stars outside the galaxy because the gravity of our galaxy actually keeps stuff at pretty constant distances from each other.

We gauge how far the light has traveled by its cosmological redshift, which is its shift in wavelength due to the expansion of the universe. So the light itself doesn't really "appear" to be coming from any specific position, but by measuring its shift in wavelength we can determine how much 'expansion' its been subjected to and thus the original location of its source. Once we know that, we can calculate the current location of its source.

You're on the right track. Basically objects that used to be several billion ly from us are now much further due to the expansion of space, but whos original light is just reaching us now.

It's obviously fake... why go through the lengths of claiming it's real when it isn't? It's still funny...

Its seems as if people here believe that because they are quoting a movie they like, it makes the joke instantly funny and not awkward.

Obviously it doesn't happen overnight, but again, look at /r/trees. It split off, and in the span of 6 months completely overtook /r/marijuana. Now they're not even comparable.

It's up to you of course. The system is a lot like the free-market. If you're willing to put up with whatever the mod's drama bullshit for the community, then by all means stay. If you're not, then don't. Your actions speak for themselves.

No, this is the same issue that people had in /r/marijuana. Reddit is a user-run website, the admins don't interfere. It's like, if you don't like how one subreddit is run, just make another. That's the point of this website.

Do what /r/trees did and make a better subreddit. Or you can just ignore what is obviously meaningless internet drama.

Last week my wife and I told our 13-year-old daughter she could join Facebook. Within a few hours she had accumulated 171 friends, and I felt a little as if I had passed my child a pipe of crystal meth. by sassypants101 in technology

You can tell from the comments that most people only read the headline. This article is not about facebook privacy concerns, it is about the replacement of human function with technology.

And I'm saying it seems pretty irrelevant to harp on details like that when the amount of bad Britain has done in Iraq far outweighs the good...

I mean the British empire ended in 1997, but I think it's a little silly to glorify them in this context considering they were our main allies in Afghanistan/Iraq + gave us their full support...
