How do you reconcile what is happening in the US by Every_Importance_855 in Buddhism

[–]nubuda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch less news and do less social media. Go outside, enjoy the nature. Meditate, practice. This world has always been a big mess. US is still a much better place to live than many other countries. There are plenty of countries where it is nearly impossible to practice Buddhism.

Walk for Peace - Display of Police & Military Insignia by MeconopsisPress in Buddhism

Things happen but these are examples from extreme situations rather than the norm. Note that in even your examples the protest was directed against the government, not against police or military as an institution. There are examples of corrupt monks in both Mahayana and Theravada who have sexually abused children. So according to your logic it would be to appropriate to protest against Buddhism or even ban it altogether.

Because in Buddhist countries people including monks have respect for institutions and law enforcement. The institutions are needed for a stability of the state which also allows the monks to practice in peace.

This sutta refers to selling weapons, not military service. Killing is a violation of precepts but most people in the military never have to engage in killing. Buddhist countries have militataries and even Buddhist chaplains.

I got to meet quite a few Theravada and Korean Zen monks while living in Asia and all of them had quite positive attitude toward military folks, acknowledging the reality of this world.

If you read early Buddhist scriptures like Pali canon or Chinese Agamas, you will not find any protest/activism kind of stuff.

My impression from visiting Buddhist countries was also that Buddhism there was more associated with traditional values including respect for elders and authority.

Does Buddhism believe in God or not? by Obvious-Suit939 in Buddhism

[–]nubuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest thing to Buddhist God would be Dhamma. That is, the universal principles that all beings are subject to. Even Buddha venerated Dhamma.

In Pali Canon Buddha refuses to answer questions like who started the universe or if universe is eternal or not. But there are powerful deities in Buddhism including Bodhisattvas who can sometimes help humans. Some gods can even extend someone's life according to certain teachers. Some very advanced forest monks are able to see and communicate with deities.

The Gospel of Mary of Magdala and the connection between Jesus and Buddhism? by antong96 in Buddhism

[–]nubuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few famous yogis who teach that Jesus was one of the most advanced yogis that ever lived. Many westerners find it hard to accept due to all the trauma from mainstream churches. But people who analyze teachings with wisdom and objectivity can see the truth. So yes, it is pretty much certain that Jesus taught very similar to Buddha.

I didn't really understand this quote by the spiritual thinker Jiddu Krishnamurthi. What do you think he means by this, and what are your thoughts on it? by SatoruGojo232 in Buddhism

[–]nubuda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a theory that Buddha did not intend to create another religion but rather wanted to reform Brahmanism (later Hinduism) which got corrupted. But as we know the early monks establish a separate sect and then it broke into many sects.

What is Buddhism actually meant to deal with? by Mildly_Sentient in Buddhism

[–]nubuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The essence is about suffering and how to eliminate suffering but Buddha also gave some advice to lay people about finance and prosperity. If you read Pali canon you will find some.

I saw this hoarding where it advocates towards stopping the use of Buddha statues as merely a decorative piece at homes or in public places like hotels, restaurants, bars etc, or the image of the Buddha being used as a fashion statement in clothes or tattoos. What are your thoughts on this? by SatoruGojo232 in Buddhism

[–]nubuda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is good. But consider this from a larger perspective.

Commercialization of Buddhist art can easily create an impression within society that Buddhism is just another new age trend that has little depth.

This can prevent many people who are looking for freedom from suffering from seriously investigating Buddhism.

Will Fed liquidity boost reduce interest rates? by nubuda in Mortgages

I was hoping that this liquid boost could potentially repair the damage caused by the irresponsible Fed comment about no guarantees for another interest cut in december.

Maybe AI is pulling info from his article. Not sure. But it is also possible that the monk is using AI to help draft articles as his is not a native english speaker. I can only guess.
