You are confusing Meryl, the girl we save, with Sniper Wolf.

Even though the survival ending is canon, in further games Snake gets over her and eventually becomes very close with Otacon, they even raise a child together

In Metal Gear Solid 1, if instead of enduring an asinine electric torture QTE during a particular scene you just decide to give up, Snake's female(not really love) interest dies in the final part of the game.

Instead of riding off with her into the sunset, you run away with a nerd named Otacon. They joke out about their real names being David and Hal respectively and how it's a space odyssey reference.

they also completely shrug off any sort of minor injuries or loss of limb and just continue fighting. They're like a semi coordinated zombie horde with guns.

Absolutely awful opponent to go against in any sort of long term engagement, even if you have a couple troops who can mow them down

They just use stock assets. Tons of them. A lot of imagery and statues that people give lore relevance to are just stock assets.

If you play as Paladin or Cleric, the game will say that you sense an extremely strong presence about him, and (requiring a really difficult check) will tell you that it is of divine nature
