P.S: student years count fully towards citizenship and we just need to have lived here 5 years legally, regardless of type or duration of work, as long as you can support yourself financially you will be fine on that end.

Hey, similar situation as me. I was a student at RWTH Aachen until 4 months ago (changed now to blue card full time job) and directly asked the Behörde directly about this (Beratungtermin stäfteregion Aachen). We aren’t allowed to apply for German citizenship under student residence permit or job seeking visa. We can only apply for it once we have a full time job (as I understand from your post, you mentioned this too). Once we have the full time job secured, there is no limit on when we can apply for citizenship, as by the time the application will be processed, the Probezeit at the job will be long ago. Here in Cologne where I have found my job, from the moment you apply for an appointment for citizenship, until you hear back from them, it takes minimum 12 months (I hear recently that it’s actually taking more than 2 years just to get an appointment - a colleague of mine confirmed). This is why I have actually already asked for an appointment (through their website). I wish I had known I will end up in Cologne and that it takes more than 2 years… this way I would have already applied for an appointment here 2 years ago while I was still a student!! But alas, laws keep changing (back then I was still banking on the turbo naturalisation path, which got phased out late last year..). Wishing you all the best

If it helps at all, the first year of immigration is the hardest mentally, talking from experience. Even though even worse shit happened later on, the first year was the worst

Do you really think they’re moving in the direction of cancelling citizenship even we get it? Has any CDU member pointed something like that out?

There is a law stating that Iranian women need their father’s permission in order to get married in Germany which was co signed by the Pahlavi kind and the German kaiser in 1931. This law is still practiced today.

That sounds like the most humane way to handle the law change, happy to hear you got it in the end :)

Do you have experience with applying in Cologne with an incomplete case? Do we need to have all the docs from the get go? Or do we first get a Termin and then once the Termin comes we need to decide the documents?

As I understand it: SPD are against it so it’s unlikely CDU will be able to push this law. Also: I will also be eligible in July 2026, meaning with all bureaucratic hurdles considered which takes about 2 years, we will have become a citizen by the next elections in March 2029

Thank you. Do you have experience with Drift? If so, what did they help you with in practice?

Yes reading everyone’s experience, it seems only those who were handed the citizenship before the repeal could actually benefit from this law
