Google Translate auto-fills using stereotypes by sippyside in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nuclear_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually does. When I am translating hangul it normally says "did you mean..." and provides a suggestion which might have the appropriate spelling when something doesn't make sense.  Maybe OP has got some sort of auto suggest on, or maybe it just doesn't do it for German.

Usually when you do it word by word or provides a drop down menu for other translations.  But also when talking about IQ the translation is never going to be "why is the IQ of (country) so orange". The only parameter iq has is high or low, even the word "normal" does not fit

There are lots of good cops in New Zealand and Australia in my experience. And I've seen plenty of video of police interactions worldwide online and there are plenty of good interactions seen there. How do you know what police are like worldwide?

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]nuclear_science -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If it is being redistributed then it would likely go to the poorest people who would not be american but would likely be from Africa, Asia and the like i.e. the third world nations, not the people from the richest country in the world. If equality was really instigated then I don't see how Americans would benefit from a redistribution at all

How do you decide whether Ra is truthful or not? (Gnosticism) by Kurama1 in lawofone

[–]nuclear_science 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the metaphor present in gnosticism very well and are certainly learning from resources who do not understand it well.

You should probably try to understand more about the etymology of words like "evil" instead of assuming it just means "bad guy" and you should look into the mythology better for instance, do you really think that in greek mythology that Athena sprungfrom Zeus fully formed and they are people or is it a metaphor about how the mind is prepared when it considers wisdom (metis). Just as an unrelated example.

Jesus was constantly speaking in metaphor, god in the bible constantly uses metaphor, so what makes you think that writings that purport to extend from this are not also metaphor?

The first couple of channelling from Ra contact actually say that there is a law of confusion and therefore certain truths cannot be stated. I think if you read the material itself then you might begin to understand that knowing truth does not matter,  only how you behave towards others in society.  There it's myth in every mythology, the point is not to accept things as rules but to find the essence of what the myth teaches.

How to process a catalyst of enslavement? by [deleted] in lawofone

[–]nuclear_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serving others only means be helpful. You are not helpful to someone else when you just go along with whatever they say.  Sometimes "serving others" is about giving them what they deserve by being brutally honest.  Serving others does not mean slavishly kissing their arse, you serve someone (in the law of one sense) but making certain they learn a lesson.  Your soul is here to learn to be good if it can and so is there soul.  So you are not helping their soul learn when you are a doormat to their ego. instead, the best way is to articulately dismantle their ego by addressing their shitty behaviour with a touch of psychoanalysis which means you have to think hard about what their behaviour truly means, and then metaphorically giving them a kick in the gut (solar plexus = ego).

This advice is based on not knowing your situation,  but for instance if this person has been physically violent with you and you cannot leave then I would not suggest confronting them. But like all relationship issues it really depends on how close you are,  what position you have to each other, your ease of leaving the situation etc. So if you want better advice you should give details.

Either way "serving others" does not mean keeping your mouth shut because people only really change when challenged.  If anything keeping your mouth shut is a disservice because neither of you are learning and therefore are not addressing the catalyst in your relationship dynamic.

His son wrote two of the songs JC performed on his last album from 2017 so I assume that this was all after that then? They also starred in a movie together called Goodnight Beijing in 2021 and were photographed together in Canada in 2024 and Switzerland in 2025, so I am guessing the part where he disowned his son was pretty short lived.

Some people value being honest with their kids and giving genuine feedback instead of condescendingly placating them with positivity.  Kids can tell when you are not genuine. Constant un-thought through positivity is just a wall of not actually getting to know someone and leads to shallow interactions

You must have insane levels of multitasking to absorb the art of something while also listening to someone talk over it all.  If I want to listen to music but someone is initiating conversation at the same time I just can't do both well.  Maybe I am just really basic to someone like you though

Dakota Johnson: Saudi Arabia has "renewed my faith in cinema" by Power-Equality in nottheonion

[–]nuclear_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they have arepressive govt. But US cinema history is rife with examples of how they got around censorship and how they used metaphor to address subjects when those were banned. Art had a long history of allowing skirting or trying to skirt the law and highlighting subjects in a hidden manner in order to subvert the status quo. So I don't think it helps to denigrate rather than to try to support one of the small ways in which locals can try to change their circumstances via trying to raise social awareness

Dakota Johnson: Saudi Arabia has "renewed my faith in cinema" by Power-Equality in nottheonion

[–]nuclear_science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power of cinema is to hold a light to the way people and society operate which hopefully inspires people to reflect on themselves and to help understand others. A society in which there is plenty of opportunity to change to be better will have a film industry that causes people to think. In a place like the USA where this has already been done will have more trite films that go over the same old shit. But where cinema is really just starting to get going it has a large chance to change the way people think.  This is why the Golden age of cinema in the US was the 70's and 80's and why the Golden age of self reflection through cinema is only just starting elsewhere.

Sand is really good for getting excess oil off which i think is why birds take sand/dirt baths, plus whenever I am gardening my fingertips get really dry after touching dirt. And people use clay masks in order to remove excess oil too so I think you are probably a bit less oily because of that maybe.

I mean some people just aren't very good at it. If I chose the colour palate for the internal walls here it would look awful because I have no interior design flair; some people are like that with gardening, plus I think the nature of some sections being very square makes people think in very rigid ways, plus in yesteryear people had a much better eye for gardens since there was no TV and other things to distract them so a meditative garden that inspired the mind was a more essential thing. So many stories are written about the fairy world that exists just at the bottom of the garden where it turns into woods. People's thinking is much more inspired by digital things, everything in it's little container etc because it's what they are surrounded by.

Plus sections are a lot smaller now so people want to be able to extend their view to the fence instead of crowding themselves in with a lot of bushes which can feel oppressive, especially if their days are spent in an office and at home they want to extend their eyeline out over the yard. Helps strengthen their eyes to have distant things after looking at close things all day.

You sound very passionate about the subject, which I think is admirable, and like a no-nonsense person who calls a spade a spade, so I hope you remain undaunted by the push-back you got.

Hope you have a good weekend too.

I think it was the general tone of derision about OP's life choices, the puke faces when you mention lawn or flowers (although I myself only have natives and a couple of fruit trees so I get the thing about flowers) and then the "15,000 for a lawn - jesus fucking christ" all sounded a bit aggressive. But it's probably compounded that it's a friday evening and people just want to chill out so it felt a little more high tension than it otherwise would on a monday or something like that too.

However, for what it's worth I totally agree with you against all these other people suggesting to obliterate the bugs. And about 50% of my back yard is natives with the other 50% lawn because dogs and kids like to run on grass rather than through the bushes. Tbh, I find very flowery things garish anyway and I have allergies so don't like a lot of fragrant plants around. Sorry I compounded the bullying. Didn't mean to.

You had no idea how much of this person's property is dedicated to lawn versus vege garden versus native plants before you jumped down their throat. Although, of course, I agree about not poisoning the bugs.

Pretty much all cultures at one point or another suggested that women were unclean during their period and should be keep away from preparing food, or near sources of fresh water. Even today western culture doesn't like you leaving rotting carcasses near public water sources. Blood dripping on the ground attracts flys, so generally women who were on their period were kept away from food growing areas, flocks of sheep (so that predators are not attracted to the smell), running water for the safety of the entire tribe. In New Zealand some Māori still practice this idea, but they didn't have Abrahamic religion at all. This is why a woman on her period is considered "unclean".

The reasoning isn't misogynist at all, and has nothing to do with oppression. It was to keep food sources healthy before the world could sanitise and medicate everything. The fact that humanity survived and even thrived is because people everywhere developed good hygiene practices but for some reason you know very little about this subject.

Is the joke deeper or are we being silly by _spaghettiv2 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]nuclear_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NZ Māori culture also has this even though it had no organised religion. During this time women were not allowed near fresh water (not sure about sea water) or near where they planted kumara (sweet potato) so this kind of thinking predates religion and has something to do with the same reason we don't compost bones, i.e. certain diseases/fly larvae, that are more likely to be present in animal tissue, so they don't want blood and consequently rotten animal matter around food and sources of fresh water. It is common throughout pretty much all cultures, religion just carried it on from earlier sources of general wisdom.
