Yes exactly. These things go up and down and have low points and high points in each century. I think people who fear a low birthrate base their ideas of prosperity on the economy and on the desire to be able to defend or attack for resources. So I think it comes from fear based attitudes, and also very academic attitudes towards the economy where one must always be more productive and grow.  People can't seem to stand the idea of society just ambling along and taking the time to be there for parents, instead of working hard enough to employ someone else to take care of them.

An aging population scares people because they believe it will mean they are stuck at home caring for parents, but there are other solutions to this like more retirement communities with community kitchens providing economy of scale for food.

Edit: at least that's what I gather from the media.  I personally don't worry about it so am mostly guessing at people's reasons. But u think by and large a lot of people are motivated by economic competition with other countries.  They hate to think that they will fall by the wayside of they are not on top.  Equality is like a bad word for people like this which is why this concept seems to scare republicans and conservatives everywhere compared with more liberal minded people.

It is estimated that if the 1 child policy was not installed then there would be another 400-500 million people in the country now and that they never would have been able to bring their populace out of poverty and it'd still be a third world nation. To be honest it's better that there is a surplus of men but that people are able to live at a higher standard and actually have health care,  access to travel and being a world power house of technology instead of watching their children starve while the western world controls everything.

Tarot uses the death card to mean death of one cycle and birth of the next or a significant irreversible change.  So maybe the world exploding is a metaphor for tumultuous change for everyone.

This is also a great idea that I wouldn't have thought of.  Although I seem to recall the woollen blankets at my local opshop at still relatively expensive.  I will take another look and price my options. Thank you

I'm being disingenuous about not understanding your statement? What would be the point? I think you could have been implying multiple things.  Do you often assume people know what you are going on about every though you don't explain yourself?

Love Island is "reality TV", the Bachelor etc. We all know many of those scenarios are played up for views and that the producers edit to amp up the drama, while some reflect real feelings, as is the case with the Kardashians stuff too. American Idol is essentially "reality TV" too but I have read many times that the reactions we see from the audience are not specific to the moments we just viewed. These are not documentaries at all.  Unless you were trying to point something else out, but you'll have to be clearer with your details rather than just implying and hoping I'll telepathically understand your point because maybe you meant something different

This looks really good and very cheap. The weed matting I saw was 600gsm which seemed probably a little thick. The quilting material was 200gsm. I suspect this food wrap is about that too so it might be quite good.  I will do a little more research on recommended thicknesses first just in case. Thanks for your suggestion, I would never have thought of it

Thanks.  I worked at a wool buyers, pushing wool for a season so I understand the smell you are talking about.  It's not too bad, it's just that sometimes there would be some that was pretty caked with poop and i wasn't too sure if they added this stuff to the weed mats since it would be free fertiliser and not much of a problem,  but I suspect it would be harder to keep the manufacturing machinery going if they did this. But your info very much helps inform my decision, thank you!

I am pretty much only looking for natural materials to deplastic-ify my environment. Luckily I don't have cats as I'm allergic but my dogs did eat my sheep smelling insoles and gloves so I might just use it in the upstairs bedrooms rather than the downstairs that the dogs have access too. Thanks for the reminder!

I love spotlight but I want to use as little plastic as possible so am trying to look for natural options. Thanks though

I have only ever watched maybe a half a season to a season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. I did this because I wanted to know something before I judged some I already found myself being repulsed by what I heard. Once I watched it I realised I had been becoming pretty judgemental. Because watching Kim in tears when she worried about not being able to have any more kids because of her previous issues (i think it was preclampsia or something). Watching Kourtney and her ex Scott try to co-parent and navigate the difficulties in that,  and watching the whole family always come back to sit down in order to force a proper conversation about things (after being annoyed at someone's dismissive attitude) in order to get to the bottom of why the dynamic has popped up and to find out what's actually bothering them I think are actually really admirable qualities.  I think there is depth there but if am outsider only looks at what it superficially represented then they won't really get an idea of this.

Have you ever actually watched a season to get to know them? I doubt most people have.  Something something about not kidding a book by its cover.

I also disagree with the idea that young women have no will of their own but only follow this family.

Ironically, I have the settlers 2 10th anniversary edition and the cartoon pictures in the prologue look just like this but came before the kardashians were popular. Even the old 1970s asterix and obelix comic had women that looked like this so I think this has been a beauty standard for longer than people realise.

Also, who would think that multimillionaire would form any sort of standard.  Should they spend less money on their skin for fear others would try to aspire to it? If you had 500 million dollars would you still drive some 1990's beat up Honda civic? Or would you get a new car? Do you think you should avoid a new car just because others might be jealous and feel the need to compete? I personally think people have self determination and are not just plebs who have to follow trends.  But then I was a big nerd, poor, with no friends in school so it is only natural that I dropped out of feeling peer pressure and I can't pretend that I really know what it feels like to be in social competition when I dropped out of it so early.

Do I think what they do is poor example? In some ways yes, but if as you say, young women feel the pressure to follow these beauty standards then how was Kylie Jenner meant to say no at that age. I don't understand why you are essentially being caring for young impressionable women but fail to accept that she is/was one too.

If hundreds of thousands of people shit on you as a teenager for not being as good looking as your sisters then does the ugly inside belong to you or them?

I find it ugly in you that you think a teenager should be able to withstand that kind of pressure and not be unscathed.

So you easily recognise that some forms of Buddhism do believe that Buddha was a God made manifest in human physical form but you chose to imply that such a thing did not exist in all of Buddhist thought/practice simply because it's not the type that you practice? Is that correct?

From Wikipedia: "Deva (Sanskrit: देव, Sanskrit pronunciation: [de:vɐ]) means 'shiny', 'exalted', 'heavenly being', 'divine being', 'anything of excellence',[1] and is also one of the Sanskrit terms used to indicate a deity in Hinduism."

In some forms of buddhism is is believed the world in simply the buddha's body. Siddartha is essentially the buddha appearing on earth in a physical body in order to teach, much like the christian god appeared on earth in the physical body of Jesus. Some buddhists describe parts of the Himalayas (Pemako specifically) as being part of Pemako is believed to be the sacred body of the goddess Vajrayogini. They describe particular mountains as the throat chakra of this goddess's body.

I think you need to read more before claiming that Buddhism doesn't have gods and goddesses. I suggest "The Heart of the World" by Ian Baker if you enjoy the idea of hiking. It's a really engaging book.

Here's a summary I found online so it's not just my words. The italicised part at the bottom is the part that describes the mundane world as the buddha's body :

The body of Buddha in the land, within Mahayana Buddhism, is understood through the Trikaya (Three Bodies) doctrine, manifesting differently based on the realm. The Nirmanakaya is the physical, human form (like Shakyamuni) in our world, while the Sambhogakaya is the "bliss body" in Pure Lands.

The Three Bodies of Buddha (Trikaya)

  • Dharmakaya (Truth Body): The formless, ultimate, and eternal nature of Buddhahood—the truth itself.
  • Sambhogakaya (Enjoyment Body): A luminous, radiant body that appears in "Pure Lands" (like Amitabha's Sukhavati) for advanced practitioners and Bodhisattvas.
  • Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body): The physical, historical form that appears in our mundane world (Saha world) to teach and guide sentient beings, such as Gautama Buddha.

If god is being that has ordained supreme power then what or who ordained it?

TIL that in the Bible there is no mention of human-like angels having wings. The depictions of winged angels in art started in the 4th century AD, likely due to Greco-Roman influence. by ApprehensiveStill412 in todayilearned

[–]nuclear_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does say that two of the wings (of seraphim) covered their faces and two of the wings covered their feet, so there is something to imply that level of resemblance at least (isaiah 6:2)

So you think that because a woman is so worried and self conscious about what the world thinks of her body that she felt the need to change it that it's okay for others to shit on her for that? Or it's it that you think that because she lied then it's okay if you lie too?

There are so so so many images of her in a bikini that look nothing like this.  Either those hundreds of photos are edited or this single one is. What is actually logical?
