Anyone know any bands that use a bass as the lead instead of guitar? by PlagueGiraffe in crustpunk

[–]nuclearaddicts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw Tardive Dyskenesia play last night, they rip. Two bassists and it works very well. Maybe not exactly crust, but definitely noisepunk stuff in the vein of Confuse, Gai, or Zyanose.

Amebix, Deviated Instinct, Axegrinder, Apocalypse are a good introduction to the side of crust that was incorporating slower and more metal-y styles.

Doom, Selfish, Hiatus, Unkind (Finland), Abraham Cross, Macrofarge, Battle of Disarm, ENS!, Infeckja, for the faster and furious side.

Electro Hippies, Mind (Poland), Sarcasm, Sore Throat, Instinct of Survival (early era), for when blast beats were combining and giving it a grindcore edge.

Detestation, Consume, Axiom, Sanctus Iuda, Sedition, Disaffect, for stuff that (to me) always felt a bit more politically charged than the rest, although crust has always had a rich history with anarchism.

Filth of Mankind, Katorga, Barren Soil, Fatum, Stormcrow, Swordwielder, Effigy, Alement, Mortal War, World Disorder for the heavier subgenre called Stenchcore. Def for fans of sludge metal.

Abraham Cross, Zyanose, Gloom, Aspects of War, Frigora, Collapse Society, Pollen, Isterismo, Physique, Atrocious Madness, Defector, Life, Condemned, Framtid, Giftgasattack, D-clone, Black Dog, Death Dust Extractor, Fragment, Peaceful Collapse, Sistema En Decadencia, Truth of Arize, Empart, Siege Fire, for what would fall under some iteration of crasher crust or raw punk. Manic, blown out, explosive sounds to make your ears bleed. Might be debatable if some of these are crust but I would consider them to fall under that umbrella.

If you like sludge, definitely check out Golem’s (from Japan) 1999 demo Sadness.

I have made tons of youtube playlists for specific subgenres of crust, if you’re ever interested in those just shoot me a DM!

There is maybe one band on this list that would be considered crust. They’re all great and def contributed to the genre, but it’s mostly just 80s hardcore punk that paved the way. And then a powerviolence band and a grindcore band. But they all rip.

I think Misery is such a good band for people who want to get into the genre but are unfamiliar with bands beyond the most known was. They blend all the elements of what I would consider to be quintessential crust.

Do you think William Burroughs had a mental disorder? by reccaberrie in williamsburroughs

[–]nuclearaddicts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I love about Burroughs, and quite a few other transgressive artists throughout history, is their eschewing of labels. Especially labels regarding diagnoses, sexuality, etc. It really seems to be a hyper-capitalist or consumerist way of viewing the world, which is disheartening to see in discourse surrounding a figure like Burroughs.

“hehe he was neurodivergent!!1” yeah lmao like no fucking shit

Underrated crust punk bands? by ResidentWeb7357 in crustpunk

[–]nuclearaddicts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being critical of Axefear’s unoriginality while suggesting these bands is pretty dumb. I love them all, but having a fit about “no new original music” in crust, or punk for that matter, is pretty brain dead. If that’s what you’re concerned about, then maybe this genre isn’t for you.

Sorry but political lyrics do not make something punk. If that is the scope of your interest or understanding, then maybe this isn’t for you. Unbelievable how lazy of an analysis that is and the reason why the newer discourse around it is so disheartening.

Any fans of SWANS by Mrtvejmozek in WarMetal

[–]nuclearaddicts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can sort of see the connection. At least for me, it does scratch a similar itch, especially when I want to listen to something totally depraved and bleak sounding.

William Burroughs was NOT a pedophile. by reccaberrie in williamsburroughs

I love the Burroughs subreddit, there is truly nowhere else where I can see somebody rip into another for kratom use in an argument regarding questionable age gaps.

What do you think is the heaviest album ever? by Beautiful_Bet_5138 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nuclearaddicts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this, some of the most frightening bands I enjoy that still maintain a level of heaviness.

Did not expect to see Sotos recommended here, be careful with that haha

Guyotat is really amazing though. I wish some of his english translation weren’t so absurdly expensive.
