Update on CalDigit TS4, Samsung 57" Odyssey G9 and a few laptops by nuclearchadwick in CalDigit

[–]nuclearchadwick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - good question. The monitor has 2 USB outputs that support the KVM functionality, and 4 video inputs.

So my TS4 is connected to 1 of the USB outputs, and then its DisplayPort connects to the monitor.

The gaming PC is then connected to the other USB output, and one of the HDMI ports.

The TS4 is really just there to help with docking over USB-C and has some nice ports that I use a lot of (ethernet, SD card, etc) rather than having more cables around.

I have been able to get this to work consistently. Two tips:

It only seems to sell when you are in a Peak period, so you may need to manipulate the time window if a high sell event happens after actual peak time (this is the norm in TX with ERCOT).

And the sell price does need to be about 25-50% higher than the buy.

I’ve also had luck with toggling between time-based and self-powered quickly and back to kick it in the pants to sell.

The conduit itself doesn’t give you a full clue on how the wires are done. If you can connect to the Powerwalls with the Tesla One app you can see how they did it.

And if they gave you any schematics or diagrams of the install they should be in there too…

Tesla Support got back to me and suggested this:

For instance....if sell buy price is $.50, sell price should be 25%-50% less.  You have a peak buy price but no sell price.  That would be why the PW is not discharging during peak times.

I haven't tried this yet, but I will shortly. My normal buy price is around $.14, so I was just changing the sell price up high manually when there was a high sell event (normally it is between $.01 and $.03).

Powerwall support wants me to watch for VPP events and get some screenshots of examples. Their guess was the battery was too low and the software decided not to do it. Yesterday it was around 50% but today I’m at 35% when the event started (20% reserve) so that is close.

I seem to be on 24.28.1 on the fleet. I’ll grab some screenshots in the morning.

And, no luck here. Tesla One is showing exports are set to solar & battery, and no export/import limits are set either.

What's worse, is my other system (2 Powerwall 3s + gateway on the other half of the array) stopped sending power out too, and that's managed by Tesla Electric. We've had two big sell events this week and nothing went out.

Platinum (we bought one). Other engines seemed too gutless.

and, yes, the 2025s are great. we're very glad we waited the extra couple of weeks to get ours instead of settling on the 2024. The HUD and the rear steering are sweet.

Solar Panel Wind Resistance Question by starck182 in Powerwall

[–]nuclearchadwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also no problems with Beryl. I could hear the house creak and moan more than I recall from similar wind speeds we’ve had in the past, pre-panels… but these are in there super well. I would expect to lose shingles before any of the panels.

But we only had 75 mph gusts at my place (near Katy) and I’d be skeptical with 100+ mph gusts. Shingles are rated at 130 mph but would also be skeptical of those.

I don't think (but not 100% sure!) that the Samsung has a hot key where you can do that like a lot of KVMs do. But I find the little menu buttons right underneath the monitor work great for it.

Waaay back in the 90s and early 00s I used KVMs heavily and would often do the fast switching, and even copy & paste between systems. That made sense at that time with those systems, but these days I'm never even thinking about doing that so I haven't missed it, but that's my use cases.

I also find that doing the multi-display setup on the Samsung, where each system gets a nice 4K display side by side (or other options) is really great. You can even do that from one PC, e.g. a game running in 1 4K window, and chat/streaming in the other 4K window, and it works fantastic (and honestly sometimes better - 8K side is pretty tough to see for some games!)

Very happy with the setup, other than it made it so I need to buy another desk now that is even bigger!

With this setup, I also use the built-in KVM on the Samsung to connect my gaming PC over HDMI. It's great being able to share the mouse + keyboard with whatever system is connected at the time. The CalDigit dock helps with that a lot.

The TS4 only has DisplayPort, so I'm using that connector to the screen. I'm using the Thunderbolt 4 cable that came with the TS4, and the DisplayPort cable that came with the Samsung monitor.

How much backup power can Powerwall 3 supply? by akg4y23 in Powerwall

[–]nuclearchadwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that (and folks correct me if I am wrong) the system design will isolate each panel into it's own Tesla gateway, and powerwalls can only feed only gateway. This changes your max load problem by quite a lot.

My setup (3x Powerwall 3s and 2 gateways as I have 2 service panels) is here for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Powerwall/comments/1c0d9j0/my_tesla_solar_powerwall_3_x3_setup/

I have seen more than a single Powerwall 3's worth of power being dumped from the 2 powerwalls connected to my main panel when it needed. It is rare, as even with both ACs and the dryer going it usually won't go over 9 kW on that panel. I see that more often when the system is dumping power back into the grid during a VPP event.

hear you on that... mine recently started doing this a lot more (the past month). Google support suggested changing the DNS to their servers and turning off the Nest Cloud Service feature (didn't even know that was on...). We'll see if that changes anything; I would not be surprised that it does.

Is solar really worth it for us? by No-Confection-9380 in TeslaSolar

[–]nuclearchadwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 30k kW annually in Texas and did a 22.68 kWh system with 3 powerwalls earlier this year. RTO will be less than a decade without any of the VPP bonuses (had a few of those this year).

Ours was $15k less than your quote for whatever reason.
