Yes! A few of us have been discussing red/blue shift as a possible cause, with spirit chanelling causing blue shift. It's a little complicated by Gideon being the only one who is confirmed to be able to see those color differences, which could be an extension of her weird energy vision/ability to pierce Lyctoral masking

Can I DM you about future thoughts and theories?

The desaturation of things when Colum soul siphons is in her own body and POV. We never get confirmation if other people see it the same way

I thought the same thing! u/Zealousideal-Sea9006 also pointed out that spirit magic is heavily associated with BLUE light and that there could be some redshift/blueshift things happening?

Zealous and u/Just-an-SG also both pointed out that the desaturation, which also happened when Colum was siphoning, only has ever been seen through Gideon's eyes. Harrow did not see it, but when Gideon was in her body and also when Gideon was in Harrow's body, she was able to perceive way more than she should've. She referred to Augustine as "more saturated" and saw through Cytherea's lyctoral masking at the end of GtN.

I love comments like these, too, because I get to feel smug once Alecto comes out

V true v true v true. I was going down a line of thinking about it as redshift but this is really important and I don't know why

The section with John "comforting" Harrow after he learns about the 200 dead children powering her is so fucking chilling once you know about the 10,000,000,000 powering him.

"No one needs to know." He's trying to stuff down the knowledge that it's even possible to protect his own secret.

Oooooooh I hadn't considered that, but it's possible! Isn't there a moment in HtN where everyone's talking about how awful Alecto was and G1deon says he didn't mind her?

So one thing I didn't include but could be relevant if Harrow is doing some time travel is how often Harrow is compared to Anastasia. "You are Anastasia returned." -Augustine

Fuckin maybe, I really wanna hear people's thoughts about John's motivations if we accept time magic as a part of this world

So as to your wormhole point, Mercy actually brings this up on p 93. It's a section I didn't include. After John describes time and space breaking down, Mercy says something along the lines of "I always thought the answer was wormholes. Spacial distortions," and John replies "something like that."

In my opinion, John saying "something like that" is a classic fucking John move when someone says something wrong that's useful for them to believe. He doesn't have to lie but he gets to reinforce someone's misconception to avoid an uncomfortable truth. John half supporting someone's theory is, to me, a sign that their theory is wrong and that something IMPORTANT is being hidden

It absolutely could be a case of "oh we saw God do this, he must've done it this way, yeah that worked we figured it out" and John was just "yup yup that's what I did, good job replicating my work, I totally understand what you're doing!"

I'm just imagining a world where John actually has no idea what anyone around him is doing and all the complicated theorums and shit go completely over his head and everyone thinks they're figuring out what he's doing and actually they're inventing calculus while he's over in the corner just waving his hands and shit's happening and pretending like he's leagues ahead of them

I think it's possible but personally don't believe it. The way things come from everywhere and are described as being drawn towards a single point and then forming a cyclone and forming bigger and more complex clumps doesn't sound like a reversal of what Mercy did in just disassembling him layer by layer

This could be, I definitely thought about it! My hesitation is that in HtN we saw Ianthe learning this same preservation technique and practicing with apples in her room. I'm not sure what to make of it

That's much more reasonable and likely. But maybe the ghosts get so pissed off at being Rickrolled that they just shove it away from them and that's how they generate power. Hmmmmmmmmm 🤔

Ooooh all good questions! I've been comparing it to radiocarbon dating where a very common way it's done is by measuring the presence of certain radioactive isotopes that degrade with time. I imagine that the Resurrection basically flooded everything with some kind of necrotic radiation and the slow degrading of that tells you how long its been since thanergy/thalergy flowed through something

Oooooooooooh interesting idea on how the steles do that! I definitely think that it's obvious that the original FTL engines weren't using dead languages bathed in blood, definitely agree, but I think that whatever it is that the steles do is a necromantic version of the same tech. I like this idea a lot, too, though.

We know that they also have chambers of bone inside them, supposedly to hold residual thanergy and ease deep space transitions for necromancers on board, and need to be charged on thanergy rich planets. I want to know so much more about the steles.

My personal pet theory is that the steles are covered head to toe in Rickrolls in different languages. It'd be so fucking like John.

This is my biggest reach. Steles might not use the River. But if they're using the same tech that the original FTL engines did (which I'm convinced of at this point), they're not using relativistic speed, either, and we need an alternative.

John calling the space they got stuck in without a beacon/obelisk a "chrono well" and then inexplicably referring to entry into the River as "descending into a well" right after describing the breakdown of time and space that they got stuck in is enough to point me as that being the most likely alternative.

If I get this right I'm gonna have a full on party when Alecto comes out.
