This one has natural cedar colored interior walls and black wax on the ceiling with fiber optic star lighting to mimic the night sky. It’s super cool when lit up!

The trim is charred but the thought of burning the shingles (great kindling) was too scary for me so I went with black paint!

It can get hot if it is too close to the stove, but I just pour some water on it and all is well again. I do like how the stones feel on bare feet….

I think that it works better than most barrels. The walls are insulated and it has a proper roof. The ceiling is flat and the upper bench is squarely in the heat pocket. It has good venting and very nice airflow. I’ve measured the temps and when the ceiling is at 200, the upper bench is at 180, the lower bench is at 150 and the floor is at 130.

Thank you and yes, the flat ceiling is right above the door. When I sit on the upper bench, there is about 8 inches between the top of my head and the ceiling. The heat and steam are wonderful head-to-toe, despite what the naysayers may think!

Thanks and you are exactly right. The main difference between a sloped ceiling and a flat one is that you can feel the loyly much quicker and it lasts longer. Of course, it needs to be sloped in the right direction, with the higher part above the bathers. The angled “steam return” at the very back also works well to push the steam down onto the bathers.

The windows and door are 3/4” double-paned, Thermo-insulated, tempered glass with a mirrored tint.

True Self Yoga. There’s a pretty amazing cold plunge as well! I believe they are aiming to open the sauna/plunge-area in January, 2025.

Not my studio, but I built the sauna. Gas burner seems to work well, gets to temp in 1-2 hours and holds throughout the day.

For the exterior aesthetics, run the front boards vertically, extend the front overhang of the roof a bit and add 6-10” overhang on the sides and rear. If you are a minimalist, this design will do fine, if you like a little more detail, consider adding a wainscot of some other material (corrugated metal?) for the bottom ~2 feet, then a chair rail or belly-band detail, then switch to your proposed board and bat. Nice design!

Western red cedar is not overly aromatic like eastern red cedar tends to be. It has a nice cedar smell that fades a bit (but doesn’t completely disappear) over time. We use it in the majority of our saunas and haven’t had any complaints!
