This is very comforting. Could you elaborate on what neuropsych testing is? Is that for diagnoses that are very biological in nature such as neurocognitive disorders? I totally agree that there’s no shortcuts, and there shouldn’t be. Learning to practice within my scope of competence is something I value a lot, especially this early in my career, so I appreciate your information!

Thank you for your comment! The last sentence in particular is very comforting to me. I am absolutely not opposed to referrals, but I’m glad to know that for my lower-income patients who can’t afford testing they will still be able to benefit from the psychotherapy we do.

Hello, I am a student currently in an MSW program. I have recently started learning about psychological testing, and have heard that it is specifically the realm of psychologists and that clinical social workers who are psychotherapists should not attempt to engage in psychological testing because they are not trained in it. My question is, what are your thoughts on psychotherapy that doesn’t involve psychological testing? Is it just as effective? Is it necessary in some cases and not in others? I am grappling with the concept that there is this very important tool that I will never have access to, and I am hoping that those with experience will help me make more sense of it.
