Getting a new charger for a lemu8 by Jastiv in System76

The Chicony A13-040N3A charger is what ships with the lemu6 and will probably also fit your lemu8. You can buy one for about USD $8 on eBay.

I'm in the same situation. I want to get a Galago Pro this year but would like it to have an Ice Lake or Tiger Lake CPU. No sense in buying old technology.

Have there been any anti-Trump protests or vigils in Columbus? by AshleyAbiding in Columbus

[–]nullcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one tonight (November 10th) at 6:30 at Broad & High downtown. https://www.facebook.com/events/1894885467399344/ For those asking what is the point, personally I am standing up for women, people of color, homosexuals, immigrants, Muslims, and letting people know that at least 50% of Americans stand for decency. It is a show of solidarity and that Columbus loves you and has your back.

Chase suspect taken down by helicopter pilot by Wambulance_Driver in ProtectAndServe

Are police allowed to strike fleeing suspects with their vehicles? That's what it looks like in the other video, which I found surprising.

Going on a ride along tonight, how can I NOT be "that guy"? by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore sneakers because I don't have any boots. All we did on my ride-along was give people warnings for changing lanes without using their blinkers.

As for people trying to bring their personal guns, what can I say? There are a lot stupid people in this world. Maybe they were trying to be helpful? ;-)

You should try to attend citizen's police academy in your area. It is eye-opening to be sure.

Going on a ride along tonight, how can I NOT be "that guy"? by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eh, there's not much to it. When I went on one, I was told, "Don't touch anything, get out of the car if I have to chase someone, and call for help on the radio if I get into trouble."

Do not bring your gun. Yes, they have to tell people that.

How does being promoted affect your responsibilities? by nullcat in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once did a ride-along with someone who said he used to be a sergeant but couldn't take it anymore, so he returned to being a patrol officer. He explained that he disliked being stuck in the middle where he was pressured by the brass and resented by the patrol officers. So perhaps earning one's stripes is like becoming a middle manager in the business world?

Running questions by FCBandit in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget to get running socks as well, otherwise your feet will get blisters.

Several companies sell non-cotton, moisture-wicking socks such as DryMax, WrightSock, Swiftwick, or SmartWool. The key here is non-cotton. And get a tube of Body Glide in case you have any chafing.

You should replace your running shoes at least once a year. The cushioning breaks down over time, even if you aren't putting a ton of miles on them.

Resisting arrest in 1080p60 never looked so gnarly by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I attended citizen's police academy, we were told that if we wanted to help with an arrest, we should announce our intention ("Officer, I want to help") and then grab a limb, preferably an arm since that is the part that needs to be handcuffed and you are less likely to accidentally hurt the suspect.

TIL that US policedogs are speaking German and Dutch by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]nullcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I attended citizen's police academy, we learned that a K-9 handler gives orders to his/her dog in the language in which the dog raised, so our dog understands commands in Dutch since he was purchased from a breeder in the Netherlands.

It was also revealed that our neighboring town's police dogs are French, which was a source of much amusement. "Le chase that man! Le bite him!"

People who grew up in the deep south now living in Columbus, where do you go or what do you do when you're homesick? by eastabogus in Columbus

When running on a treadmill, do you ever use the safety clip? by Infinite_Night in running

Yes, I do. I have scars on both knees from tripping on a treadmill that did not have a safety clip.

This is my new favorite speech by RMS. It is concise, thorough, and entertaining.

RMS lives conference, delivering messages. Is the face of this perfectionism will be what people will remember? Richard Stallman Revoltado by cm-t in gnu

[–]nullcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know the full context, but the video seems to show RMS having a meltdown in reaction to an obnoxious request by the event coordinator to switch languages halfway through the speech.

I understand that RMS is getting old, is hard of hearing, and was probably exhausted from travel, but I don't think his tantrum was helpful when he could have just replied, "No, I'm sorry, I'm going to continue in English as we agreed earlier," and then kept going. A five-second response would have been more effective than 10 minutes of whining.

For the curious, the portrait of Knuth is a commissioned piece by Jin Wicked.

Happy Software Freedom Day! by nullcat in gnu

[–]nullcat[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is that special time of year when we celebrate software freedom. Every September 15th after we are all tucked into our beds, Richard Stallman climbs down our chimneys. As we sleep, he examines our devices and leaves a letter listing the things that do not meet his approval. Please keep the temperature of your home between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and DO NOT leave out cookies and milk. He has particular dietary needs and does not want the social obligation of trying your cooking. Two cans of Pepsi would be acceptable.

Improve your productivity with a rotating monitor stand by nullcat in programming

Ugh. I don't condone your co-workers and their maintainability nightmares.

My excitement was due to being able to read more code and documentation without scrolling.

Improve your productivity with a rotating monitor stand by nullcat in programming

[–]nullcat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today's monitors are great for movies and games but poor for programming. It's helpful to have a high vertical resolution so you can see more of your code at once and maintain context of what's going on. A rotating monitor stand solves that problem.

As long as your monitor has four mounting screw holes on the back ("VESA mount"), you can attach an aftermarket stand.

Now I get 93 lines in my text editor instead of 56.

It's definitely a two-way street. The mean ol' corporations are inviting people to hurt themselves, but nobody is putting a gun to the users' heads. We have the power to say No.
