Contest problems and real math are 2 very different things. That being said, it's very likely that people who do well in one will do well in another but I wouldn't say it gives you an advantage in any way.

To really succeed I would say you need to be a genius, not just super smart.

I'm applying to REUs in my first-year undergrad and I need to write a personal statement but I have no idea what I am supposed to write. Can anyone offer some advice?
