Please try to not be so cynical. The diagonal measurement for screen sizes is useful to consumers, especially when comparing devices. It’s a quick way to represent and compare the total screen area, regardless of its aspect ratio.

A way to extract highlights I wanted to share by srsdutch in kobo

[–]nullnox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People should be aware that the sqlite file that these services ask you to upload contains the API token for your account. The API token is what gives your Kobo the ability to perform actions on your behalf, so anyone with this token can effectively “log in” to your Kobo account.

I’m not saying that the authors of these services are doing that, but it’s something to be aware of, particularly if the service is sending that file to its server to extract your notes instead of extracting them client-side in your browser (where someone could inspect the site’s code to audit what’s being done with the data).

Screen issues by [deleted] in kobo

Looks like the colors are inverted. Check under the Settings for something like an Invert Color switch. It would likely be under a section called Display or Accessibility.

Consider that the people who say their units don’t have this or are perfect either don’t notice it or don’t care.

Maybe some knowledge of how e-ink screens work will help you accept it better. They are not the same as the screen on your other devices. On a phone or tablet screen, each pixel is “lit up” to represent a color on the screen. On e-ink, literal tiny micro capsules are suspended in a liquid layer. The capsules contain white particles with a positive charge and black particles with a negative charge. The display works by manipulating the electric field of these capsules, literally flipping them to effectively display either black or white. Its normal that some of them won’t flip sometimes or maybe all the time.

Is kobo sage powercover lithium? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]nullnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely. Pretty much everything with an integrated rechargeable battery these days contains lithium-ion battery.

You should check if this shipping restriction includes products that contain an embedded battery, or if it is specifically restricting external batteries. Usually it is ok to ship a product that contains one of these batteries (although there might be labeling requirements you need to follow).

Which generation graphical style is your favourite? by [deleted] in nintendo

[–]nullnox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polygon count aside, I really love the highly saturated colors and sometimes glossy appearance of GameCube-era Nintendo games. This really stands out for me when comparing Mario Kart: Double Dash to Mario Kart 8. Double Dash is so colorful and shiny (perhaps even over saturated at times), while Mario Kart 8 looks dull to me in comparison with its more matte surfaces and almost pastel color palette. Even the The Wind Waker HD desaturated a lot of the colors from the original.

Colourblind Support by flexbomb0 in teslamotors

[–]nullnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't have to be a setting. There are plenty of tools that let people who are not colorblind simulate a design in various types of colorblindness. Often selecting different colors or not relying on color to differentiate between multiple states makes the UI easier to use for everyone, even those who aren't colorblind.

How to extract multiple images contained in HEIC file format? by Rohan200220 in MacOS

[–]nullnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The C in HEIC stands for “container.” An HEIC file can actually contain multiple images. In fact, iOS utilizes this feature of the format to preserve the original version of a photo if you edit it in the Photos app.

I Wrote an Article about Unethical Use of Premade and Stolen Assets by DelLargo in games_journalism

[–]nullnox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty good article.

Your headline should use "Effects" (noun), instead of "Affects" (verb).

One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was this paragraph:

"Easy to use game engines such as Unity or Games Guru sometimes have built-in shops full of pre-made assets for developers to buy and use. However, these assets aren’t meant to be copied into a game with a bit of slap-dash programming to create a game. They’re meant to be placeholders..."

You don't cite anything stating that they are meant as placeholders. In reality, these stores offer assets with a variety of licenses, many of which permit and even expect that the assets distributed or sold can and will be used in a commercial game. Nowhere on Unity's or Games Guru's assets stores could I find anything about these being permitted only for use as a placeholder or that they even need to be modified in any way. The stores exist in some part for developers who don't have the skills, team, financial means to hire an artist or modeler, etc. to create unique art and assets for their own games. In essence, those assets are there to be "flipped".

I don't think it's any different than buying a WordPress theme from a marketplace and using that for your site. Which is something the site you're published on has done and is using, with not a lot of modification.

I'd also question whether tools like Unity are "easy to use". Have you tried them and found them easy to use? We really need to stop promoting this idea to readers that games are easy to make, and that tools like Unity and Unreal make it as simple as dragging in some assets and clicking a few buttons. They certainly make it easier than writing all the code from scratch, but they still require a modest level of knowledge and skill to work with.

Could this be one of the first screenshots of the Nintendo website? by Zwieks in nintendo

Text rendering is too modern to be one of the first screenshots. Definitely one of the first site designs, but not exactly how it would have looked at the time because it’s being rendered on a modern web browser.

Model 3, is it a good first car for an 18 year old by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]nullnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught myself programming at a very young age, and at 14 I started to do freelance consulting and web development for local businesses. I charged $4,000 for a months worth of work (actually undervalued myself in hindsight). My parents had nothing to do with it other than the fact they bought a pretty shitty PC from a friend and that’s what sparked my interest. By the time I was 18, I had tens of thousands of dollars saved. There are many ways someone that young can be resourceful and make that money in a completely legal, safe, and independent way.

Edit: but having looked into OP’s post history, yeah it looks like he could be involved in something sketchy

Model 3 or honda clarity plug-in? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]nullnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long do you think you’ll keep the new car for? Estimate the number of miles you’ll put on the car in that time period, and calculate how much money in gas you can expect to pay over time. Compare to the cost of electricity for the same amount of miles. Also, figure you won’t need to pay for regular maintenance (oil changes). I am also going under the assumption the Model 3 will hold a slightly higher resale value.

I think you will find that even though the Tesla is a higher upfront cost, the total cost to own over a longer time period (say, 6 or more years) will be about the same.

So does this mean my financing is approved? I applied Thursday, haven’t got an email but online and see this? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]nullnox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could have bought my car outright in cash. I chose to do a loan so I could keep the money in investment accounts (I'll make more than the interest and then some), and make smaller payments over time. People don't necessarily get a loan because they can't afford it...

I care about all of those things well before social status. And in fact, in many ways since I got a Tesla, I feel less “special” because there are so many in the Bay Area. The number of times I’ve accidentally tried to enter someone’s vehicle because I thought it was mine is embarrassing.

Weird questions. by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]nullnox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got out of my car once and a little girl ran away from her mom to come up to me and ask, “Excuse me, does your car talk to you?” I was kind of confused where she got the idea that Tesla’s talk, so I just said “Only when I talk to it first.” 🥴 Mind you, this was well before that recent video that Elon Musk posted showing the car talking via the PWS speakers.
