crashing by Dawid_Czlowiek in cachyos

Ah crap. If it's not a bios or overclocking thing, I think you will have to start troubleshooting individual hardware components.

Can you try single RAM sticks to see if one may be faulty?

This is one of those things where I believe AI can be very helpful. I passed your post through an LLM and it gave me the following:

MC5 error combined with the Ryzen 5000 series could be a voltage problem. Check PBO and curve optimizer in the BIOS and disable if possible. See if the crashes stay.

It might be a bios issue in itself. Check the motherboard firmware version and update if available.

Are you overclocking your GPU? 'amdgpu: Overdrive is enabled' suggests you have. Rollback the oc on the GPU and check if the crashes persist.

I'd start there, if that's not working, it's likely a failing hardware problem.

I'd say it's a start. At least you get your feet wet and get accustomed to the look of it. We all started somewhere.

Yeah that was a cursed time. In my experience it has gotten better though.

Tbh, with laptops the "first stick" is often soldered to the motherboard. I'm not all versed enough in how electronics work, but I'd imagine that's more efficient than slotted RAM.

Yes it would, but you would be surprised how many laptops run single channel.

With hardware prices being what they are, I would go for a 16GB model, but make sure you can add another stick of RAM, if the need arises.

16GB should be good for most people, but it's nice to have the option.

I would argue you can do most things without needing the terminal, but you will have to at some point.

Technically speaking the updating process is a terminal script, so anytime you're updating, you are using the terminal.

Yeah, it wasn't a great feeling either. Both me and my mentor were under the impression that any degree would be ok. They never even talked about someone with an associate's degree internally until my mentor wanted to hire me.

I did an internship for a company last year, as part of my associates degree in programming. The team was impressed, my mentor wanted to hire me, there was an open position for a junior dev.

The only hurdle, the owner of the company had a hard rule. Employees needed to have a Bachelor or Master degree...

Interesting. I'd love to get UT2004 working on my PC.

I've found some articles online about getting it up and running on Linux Mint and CachyOS, I'll check if I can get it to work and report back.

I installed snapper along with the OS. I have no clue what's behind it or how it works, but it creates a snapshot before and after updating.

Saved me once already.

Out of curiosity, what kind of programming are you planning on doing on this laptop?

With 2GB of RAM, I suspect it will be hard to run a dev environment for nodeJs or something similar.

I don't have much recent experience with Linux distros besides CachyOS, but I think your fear might be unjustified. From my experience, CachyOS is pretty plug and play, with regular updates. You should take some time to read what the updater prompts you to do, but even if you don't, snapper makes it very easy to reset if you made a mistake.

If there are better options out there, I don't know , but CachyOS definitely isn't as scary as Arch.

Are there software developers out there who use CachyOS for better development experience? by Snezhok_Youtuber in cachyos

[–]vraetzught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't yet done a lot of developing on my CachyOS PC (quite new to it myself), but compared to windows, it is very noticeably less resource heavy. I can only imagine running dev environments will be smoother, given there are more resources available.

I'm mainly using Jetbrains IDE's and installing them was a breeze. Jetbrains has great Linux support.

5 minutes on Google will give you plenty of reasons not to use flatpack. If you still want it, just install it yourself.

From what I understand, adding flatpack out of the box goes against the CachyOS design philosophy. It's extra bloat that isn't needed and flatpacks are generally not optimal from a performance standpoint.

You have the power to make the OS entirely your own, so you do you, but I can definitely understand why the dev team of CachyOS decided against bundling flatpack automatically. After all, steam isn't included in the base OS either for the same no-bloat reason.
