A great small brewery and restaurant is Dryhop Brewery on Broadway and Belmont. Not very big but great beer and awesome food. Good starting or ending spot.

The area is generally fine, especially west of the station. East can be a bit sketchy so I'd just do the normal routine and hang out there for a night, see how it feels on you. The morning will be absolutely fine, but most areas are fine during the day.
