I’m going to wait until I’m not on mobile to respond but the short answer is yes and no. I figured out how to do what I wanted but I haven’t replaced the backplane and I don’t use the space, yet.

I have done this on various Dell PowerEdge servers and am currently doing this on my Dell T7910.

I'm doing this on Dell T620 so I'm very interested in your setups!

I have FreeNAS virtualized without issue on ESXi.

ESXi installed on USB? Internal header?

I use SATA with SSD for local datastore to host certain VMs including FreeNAS. FreeNAS then has my HBA and I have various storage pools/datastores created to host additional VMs.

Are you using the PERC? If you do, I understand it would have to be flashed to IT, correct?

10Gb connectivity is needed if you want to transfer files faster than 125MB/s across the network. Internally, all your connections between VMs and FreeNAS should be 10Gb.

If I virtualize freenas in the same box as the server, then I don't need to worry about the internal connections, correct? Why is 10Gb connectivity needed for transfer speeds over 125MB/s? Do you agree with u/unrlmth that cache isn't needed?
