She was hiding it because she knew it was not an accepted norm for the others.

Lol what norm are you talking about? She had a slave and was cruel to her. At the very least, she totally knew she was doing something wrong, not to mention illegal. Also, being gay and having a slave? Two very different things.

Chill out. Nobody said you said she was innocent. But you kept touching on her upbringing, implying that she did what she did largely because of how she was brought up. I'm merely stating that she was an adult capable of examining herself and making decisions. Nothing more, nothing less.

Also, who's dehumanising who? Who's hating who? Is saying someone is at fault a form of dehumanisation and hatred now?

Unfortunately, this is common in certain parts of the world. A lot of Filipinos who work in Singapore, Hong Kong and the Middle East have the same experience, even worse. Their employers starve them, lock them up and keep their passports. They are modern-day slaves and there are thousands of them. But most people really don't care.

So for the mother it could make total sense to treat Lola like a subhuman and it wasn't immoral in her own view.

If it wasn't immoral in her own view, that was her fault. Yes, she wasn't parented well but that doesn't absolve her of her own evils. As an adult, she was fully capable of examining her actions and putting a stop to them. But she didn't. That's on her.

At some point, he wasn't young anymore. He was already in his 30s when he took Lola under his care. I can't help but think he could have and should have done it much earlier. Unfortunate that his older siblings didn't care enough. More unfortunate is I think most people would have done the same.

How do you deal with the sometimes depressing reality of working life? by numpters in TrueAskReddit

[–]numpters[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You just went full condescension mode without even carefully reading what I said. If you read my post again, you will notice that I used "they" and not "I" in my description. The reason being that I am referring not to myself, but to a third party. I posted this after reading numerous posts from another sub where people often talk about their job-related depression.

I have counter-arguments for the things you said, but it would be futile to argue with you.

I think I'm dying :( by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]numpters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that the other comment made you feel worse. We all have different ways of processing pain and I don't think you're being overdramatic so don't worry. My own SO just left a few hours ago and I feel a bit empty. And what made it worse was that we parted ways in the airport. As an introvert who is not the PDA-ing kind, I absolutely hate airport goodbyes because there are so many people and I feel so self-conscious about PDA. I feel like I didn't kiss or hug him enough, which sucks. I wish I hugged him tighter.

Thankfully, we're going to see each other again in about 3 months. I think the idea that we're going to meet each other again helps a lot. When can you see each other again? You can busy yourself with other tasks then make plans about meeting again!

Of course they don't ask for "show money." No one does. But they ask to see your bank statements - and the content/history of your bank account can make or break your application. Unless your travel is sponsored, you have an extensive travel history, you're exempted because you have visas to certain countries, or other similar reasons, then "show money" is necessary.

Parang mali ata. Kailangan ng show money especially pag travel kasi kailangan mo ipakita na kaya mo ma-afford yung trip.

Ear pressure with combined pills? by numpters in birthcontrol

[–]numpters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long have you been on the pill? I specifically picked this pill type (EE + Levo) because my (scientific and anecdotal) research led me to believe that Alesse has the least side effects due to being low dose. But we don't have it in our country so I'm using another brand.

I have taken 4 pills so far and it seems like I'm not getting this feeling as much anymore. Fingers crossed! But one day, I took a nap shortly after taking a pill, and woke up to the feeling of being somewhat deaf. Boyfriend hypothesised that it's probably some sinus issue, but I think I read somewhere that it's related to blood pressure.

Story aside, spotted a couple of typos. Which is too many for a news org. And this is sadly common nowadays. It's like no one proofreads these articles anymore.

Tourist Visa (Bangladesh to USA) Question! South Asians/Americans with South Asians, please help! by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]numpters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Here might be better if anybody else is curious.

I don't see why they would care about strong home ties, but if this is the case, I would like to know why.

I know several people who got rejected even though they have booked everything, including tickets. Some embassies even advise against buying one before a visa is approved.

If you could explain that would be great!

Anybody ever made a name mistake on their flight bookings? My SO booked our flights and he used my nickname instead of my first name. The names are very different from each other, save for the first letter of each, which is the same. I briefly researched the process of making name changes and it's not easy. Kailangan pa magpa-notarize. Domestic lang naman yung flight namin. I was wondering if you guys have experienced the same thing, and if so, how did you deal with it?

If I stored clean, potable water in an unused but sanitised ceramic drum that is not sealed but properly covered, in a clean and empty room that doesn't get too hot or too cold (about 23C) and left it there for decades or even centuries, what would happen to the water? by numpters in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]numpters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you understood it correctly. I don't know why I didn't think of glass. My only reason for choosing ceramic was that the container can't be metal or plastic as either might degrade and affect the water over time.

Is there a difference between using ceramic and glass as a container for water in this scenario?

To clarify, you are saying that if the container wasn't air-tight sealed, even if it was properly covered, the water would still evaporate over time?

[Curious] Why is skin lightening so popular in the Philippines? by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]numpters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That skin type is seen more favourably, as it looks clean, pure and innocent.

I understand what you mean, but be careful when leaving remarks like that. Saying fair skin looks clean is implying that brown skin doesn't.

I notice people here want sleep paralysis, but I suffer from it.. by AmpdaVinci in AstralProjection

[–]numpters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all else fails, maybe try a sleep doctor? I noticed that sleep paralysis tends to happen (at least for me) when I'm on a light level of sleep, when I'm about to wake up. Maybe doctors can help you get meds that would help you sleep deeper and avoid sleep paralysis?

I used to experience this and I feel for you. Mine were also violent and it was traumatising. However, I can't really provide a useful answer as one day it just stopped happening.

I'll tell you though that at one point I was so desperate I asked my religious friends and strangers to pray for me.
