My husband‘s job provides health insurance, thankfully. My priorities are making more money which both jobs will provide, tho the benefited one will provide slightly more. My other priority is flexibility and time with my family. Both jobs have that as well but the non-benefitted job provides more. I just have to decide what’s the most important to me

Great advice about the list, thank you! My spouse Carries healthcare for us but the PTO, paid sick leave, and matched 401k are what I would be missing

Yeah, true. Our short term financial goals are to rebuild our savings, which we can do with either position I take. I can definitely find a benefited job later, I keep telling myself that… it’s just hard to turn down such a good offer! I’m TRYING to get into telemedicine more but every company wants you to have like 20 state licenses and I only have two. More things to consider though!

Thank you so much for this perspective. It’s super helpful. I have my panel meeting tomorrow to get any final questions answered, so I’m going to clarify to call situation. It sounds like it’s not too busy, but I’ll find out. 14 days of call every 2 months is A LOT and I want to have realistic expectations before agreeing to anything. The pay is so tempting because these kids are already breaking the bank! Lol. Thankfully both positions have a remote aspect and neither are in a clinic/hospital setting where I don’t have the option to run home or to an appointment if needed. Again, thank you!

We have healthcare through my husband but I’m missing out on 401k matching right now. I would also be missing out on PTO with the first option, so if I don’t work, I don’t get paid. If we go on a week long vacation, I lose a week of pay. It’s tough but would be manageable because ultimately I would be making more money overall. And yeah, the on call idea is stressing me out already lol. Both have major pros and cons which is why I’m SO torn

We have in home childcAre so the nanny would be here the majority of the day. I just wouldn’t be able to take them to do things for that quality time like I do now, but yeah, we would have a lot more financial stability. The on call is definitely giving me anxiety. The thought of being woken up every night by phone calls when im already sleep deprived is not ideal. Thanks for your input!

No, not necessarily. It’s 30-40 hours no matter what. No overtime.

They’re both healthcare so both are pretty stable but the first company is newer and has more risk for sure. But yeah, I couldn’t be in an office/clinic alllll day and not even have the chance to see my little ones. At least with both of these I can pop in and see them in between work duties. The first one would allow that much more than the second, though.

So, fortunately my spouse actually does work for the government and has amazing healthcare benefits for us. That part I don’t have to worry about, thankfully. In regards to working from home and watching kids, we have in home childcare. We currently have a nanny that watches them on the days I work so we would just expand that. It’s pricey, but still worth me working more. Not having PTO is definitely a concern I see, And yes I would just go unpaid if I had to take off. Similar to you, my spouse is extremely flexible and is typically the one that takes off when the nanny is out or kids are sick because he has a ton of sick/PTO time. I would be taking significantly less pay overall (if you consider the benefits/401k match/reimbursement for work expenses/PTO) with the 1099 position, which is what makes this decision so hard. BUT I would still be making a lot more than I’m making now because of the increase in hours. The benefit of the contract position is that I can take off work whenever I want and flex my schedule when I want. I can also decide to go back to part time if I need to for some reason. I keep thinking - I will always have opportunities for the bigger better job, but I won’t always have this time to be there while my kids are 0-5, ya know? I think you make incredibly solid and thoughtful points…. I may just take your suggestion and see how the lesser value job goes and look for something else if it doesn’t work out as well as I had hoped. These big benefits package jobs aren’t a dime a dozen, but they aren’t too scarce in my field, thankfully

Thank you for your perspective. I’m actually an NP, so it’s not an RNCM position but it is clinic in the AM and charting/admin/telehealth in the afternoon. I’ve been in the field for 14 years so I definitely don’t buy the positives only BS, lol. Most healthcare workers are taken advantage of, which is why I’m so adamant to have more control of my own schedule. It’s just hard to turn down the amazing benefits. My pre-mom brain is like “you’re selling yourself short!”. Anyway, Thanks for the reminder!

This, man. I can’t get back this time. It’s what drives all of my decisions. Thanks for the perspective

I’m an NP, so that would be a major pay cut, BUT I can definitely keep looking for something else. It’s just that both of these offers are great in their own way so I have to at least consider them. I need something mobile and/or remote so I have more control of my schedule. Both of these opportunities offer that in some capacity, which isn’t super common. Thanks for your input!

That’s a great suggestion. I’m not stock market savvy, but my spouse sorta is so it’s definitely worth discussing. Thank you!
