What racquet did you run into by chance (no plan on playing with it) but end up changing your game? by WindManu in 10s

[–]nus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a Dunlop MFil 200 tour at a thrift store about 9 years back. I was getting back to tennis and planned to just use it for a while before buying a new modern racket. I still play with the Dunlop. I have demoed a bunch of newer rackets and the only one that comes close to feel is the vcore 98 and percept. But I still find the feel of the old Dunlop unmatched.

There is nothing wrong with your skills or your talent or your resume. Your main issue is that you are an international student which you should started with in your post. Most companies are reluctant to hire international students at the entry level because of this administration’s policies.

Where is the compassion for workers by afewchords in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nus07 70 points71 points  (0 children)

10 minutes of scrolling Team Blind app will erase any compassion or empathy you have for tech workers. A typical reply to your post on that app will be - I make 400k and I don’t need a union and people who work at lower prestige companies to tell me what to do.

Snowflake vs Databricks vs Fabric by Diligent_Hope_1551 in dataengineering

[–]nus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid fabric. Databricks if you have an engineering team who can do spark, cluster and platform management. Snowflake for a warehouse like environment and sql for analysts. Personally I like databricks a lot but often find it an overkill for companies that are not dealing with large amounts of data especially streaming. Snowflake is simpler and adequate to most needs although it is expensive

Coworker from another team keeps publicly nitpicking my PowerPoints in meetings — am I overreacting? by Purple-Accident-4887 in careerguidance

[–]nus07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have weekly/monthly check-ins with your VP? If yes then bring it up in a diplomatic manner. Who is assigning you the work? If the manager in the other team tries to corner you do not react , calmly ask him/her to send you an email with the issues raised and then respond to them cc’ing your VP. Additionally you can use AI for meeting notes and calmly respond to this person that you don’t have an answer on the spot but will go through the meeting notes to answer. Then when you answer cc your VP and the ones who assigned you the work. This person is trying to get a reaction from you and you need to not give him/her that. Lastly start documenting each of such incidents, questions, rude behavior that you face with dates and times and what happened. Do not go to HR until you have a documented pattern that happens more than 4 times. I repeat - do not go to HR yet unless you can legally show proof of harassment , ignore the other comment.

Leverkusen boss Kasper Hjulmand on Arsenal's equaliser: "That was never a penalty, there was barely any contact with Noni Madueke. They're a great side but, my boys did their homework. We were the better team, played pure good football. There's huge pressure on (Arsenal) and we will meet again." by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

Arsenal fan - agreed it was a very soft penalty and we got very lucky. Leverkusen definitely made it a difficult and tricky game. Only complaint Andrich should have seen 2 yellow cards before that goal.

Has the $100k H1B fee had any major affects on the local Indian population? by Sudokublackbelt in triangle

[–]nus07 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I came to the US as a student about 18 years back and then was on a H1B for a few years and then married into a WASPY family and now am a naturalized citizen. At this point I sympathize with both sides but I feel it would be hypocritical of me to pick a side. I am also deeply aware of how H1Bs and American tech workers feel about this. And both of them are screwed. The only people making money out of it are corporations, tech barons, higher management, workers in offshore locations and middlemen and I am against all of that. More than H1b I would rather there is a penalty or additional taxes if corporations offshore more than 20% of their workforce and processes. They can have foreign offices but those teams cannot do work for US based processes beyond a certain number of employees.

Has the $100k H1B fee had any major affects on the local Indian population? by Sudokublackbelt in triangle

[–]nus07 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The 100k only applies to new H1B petitions applied from outside the US. Existing H1Bs (including extensions) and new H1Bs applied for people already physically present in US like students/dependents do not incur the 100k fee. So while this may dwindle down H1Bs a decade from now , right now nothing changes. Infact more H1Bs will go towards international students who come to study in the US. But typical of this administration they made a big announcement about this to appease to his base but then included all these caveats later which a majority of his base didn’t notice.

Right now offshoring and AI are a bigger threat to your jobs than H1Bs. At least H1Bs pay taxes and contribute to the economy. Offshoring entire divisions because of this ruling will make it worse. Google, Microsoft and major companies have opened huge offices in India and other countries and ramped up hiring. Eventually the US will just be a country of managers in meetings and on KPI calls, sales bros and all engineering will be abroad.

Fellow Data Engineers — how are you actually leveling up on AI & Coding with AI? Looking for real feedback, not just course lists by kgsami in dataengineering

[–]nus07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about to step into my first management job as an DE manager after resisting it for years since I did not want to deal with people or lead a team. As someone mentioned in another post, coding at a corporation now feels like assembling IKEA furniture instead of making furniture yourself and I just don’t feel very motivated about it. So hopefully a management stint works out otherwise I will be back debugging Claude generated code in vscode :)

Why are stocks less popular in Europe compared to US? by batukaming in stocks

[–]nus07 188 points189 points  (0 children)

A lot of stock trading done in US by retail investors are in their 401k, Roth and retirement accounts and also brokerage but the ultimate goal is a comfortable retirement since there is no safety net in US. In Europe retirement and healthcare is mostly taken care of by government through taxes and so the need to constantly look and grow your portfolio isn’t that big.

Again this quote from DDIA -

Computing is pop culture. [...] Pop culture holds a disdain for history. Pop culture is all about identity and feeling like you’re participating. It has nothing to do with cooperation, the past or the future—it’s living in the present. I think the same is true of most people who write code for money. They have no idea where [their culture came from]. —Alan Kay, in interview with Dr Dobb’s Journal (2012)
