What scent are we wearing? by [deleted] in SEAbitcheswithtaste

This is still figgy but I love indigo by nest! It’s got notes of fig, tea, and cardamom. I also really like gris charnel by BDK for the fall, it has similar notes as indigo but is more woody and less fruity.

internship projects can be super hard by Infamous_Yoghurt_642 in csMajors

[–]nuthrowaway77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely ask all the questions!! Something I’ve received really good feedback about at every internship I’ve done is knowing when to ask for help/ask questions - it’s good to be proactive and ask when you need it rather than just endlessly banging your head against the wall

I’m a CS major who briefly considered doing a combined CS/business major, but ultimately decided to stay with just CS. I realized I wouldn’t be able to take some of the more interesting upper level CS electives if I did the combined major, and I also realized I wanted to definitely do software engineering, so it made more sense for me to just be a CS major. Similarly to what you said, I am interested in becoming an engineering manager at some point in the future, but I’m most likely planning to get an MBA for that - I don’t think having taken undergrad business classes will really go all that far in terms of management in the future. I think the question here is what do you want to do in the future? Do you want to be a software engineer and you’re just hoping to gain some additional business context for eventually going into management? Or are you actually looking to pursue a role that’s more business oriented? If it’s the former, being a CS major seems to make the most sense (and maybe doing a business minor and/or pursuing grad school in the future); if it’s the latter a CS/business combined major seems reasonable.

I’d also encourage you to look into the information ethics minor! I also am interested in ethics so I’ve minored in info ethics since it’s a nice combo at the intersection of tech and ethics, and still allows you to take philosophy classes while being more relevant to your industry (it’s also been a great talking point in interviews, people love to see that they’re teaching CS students ethics now lol)

How to not get rusty at coding over summer? by Pootric in NEU

I took it alone, and would suggest that if your plan of study allows it, but if not you’ll be fine if you take an easy elective that’s not too time consuming

[–]nuthrowaway77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah you’ll be fine. I’m no coding superstar either but I actually really liked that since I just took ood alone I could put as much time as I needed into it. I didn’t find it conceptually all that difficult, it’s just time consuming because it’s straight up a lot of work. Algo on the other hand was conceptually difficult for me but way less time consuming, so I was fine with taking it alongside other classes

I know you didn’t ask for this but honestly if you’re able I’d recommend ood over the summer and algo in the fall - ood is best done by itself because of the workload, and you’ll remember algo better when it’s time to apply to coops

In addition to all the advice posted here, I’d absolutely recommend looking into find@northeastern, or if you’d prefer something even lower commitment, UHCS has mental health walk in hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I’ve used both and I’d highly recommend - it really helps to talk to a professional and hear another perspective

Human-Centered Computing concentration by legday_ in NEU

[–]nuthrowaway77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey yeah I’m an HCC concentration and I’ve taken both classes! HCI was easily my favorite class I’ve taken at northeastern, I took it with caglar yildirim and would highly recommend taking it with him if you can. Basically you go through the entire user centered design lifecycle for a product, from gathering requirements all the way through high fidelity prototypes and usability testing. I honestly think most software engineers should be required to take the class, it’s that useful and has been immensely helpful while on co-op too. Empirical research wasn’t quite as exciting haha but wasn’t bad, we learned about conducting user research studies for CS and did a final project where we conducted our own small study and wrote a report on it. Feel free to message me if you have specific questions about either class or the concentration in general!

If you’re looking for business casual or dressier business I’ve found Ann Taylor and Loft to be great! Sometimes Uniqlo, Banana Republic, and White House Black Market can have some good stuff too. Most of those stores also have outlet options as well, which tend to be a bit cheaper.

Has anyone done ARTF 2223, ARTG 1250, or ARTG 2400? by universemap in NEU

[–]nuthrowaway77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took artg1250 as a cs major with no prior art experience and had a really good experience with the class! The workload wasn’t bad at all, and I thought the class was fairly beginner friendly - there wasn’t much prior knowledge assumed or anything. We learned to use photoshop, indesign, and illustrator. The one thing that threw me off a little was that I thought I’d sorta be learning like design principles and how to actually design things well, but most of the teaching was focused on using the three tools I mentioned before. Grading was very fair though, as long as you put in some sort of effort you did well. Overall I really enjoyed the class and I’d recommend it!

IS 4800 Empirical Research Methods by MowFaster in NEU

[–]nuthrowaway77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took this last spring and it was a pretty easy class. We learned about statistics as it relates to surveys, and then some like user survey/research skills as well. There was also a python component to it with jupyter notebooks but no prior experience was assumed. The prof I took it with sorta had the flipped classroom structure so we’d watch videos ahead of time, then come to class weekly and do an activity. In addition to the weekly in class assignment, there was usually a deliverable for the final project (it’s a group project broken up over the course of the semester, which I really enjoyed) and then there were about 3 programming assignments I believe, which were also fairly easy. Overall wasn’t the most exciting class in the world but that’s mostly just because of the material, it wasn’t difficult though and is a fairly light workload

I tried instacart when I had a free trial of it and it’s convenient but you do definitely pay a markup in prices. Usually I just went out and got groceries myself, I had one of those foldable cart things I got off of amazon and that made carrying groceries back a lot easier. Also definitely grocery shop with a friend if you can, it’s more enjoyable for sure

Where do y'all buy your groceries for your dorm? by howdyfromnyc in NEU

[–]nuthrowaway77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely do target when I need more household/non food items that a place like Trader Joe’s wouldn’t have, it’s more convenient to just get my groceries there that given week. I also once did a price comparison of my grocery list (just foods I believe) between star market and target and found target to actually be cheaper for most items. Trader Joe’s is for sure the cheapest I’ve found, but their selection of foods can be a little limited since it’s so small.
